Microsoft announced earlier this week it’s plans to release a new update (or rather a second update) to Windows Home Server (WHS), this update
is scheduled for delivery on Tuesday, November 27, 2007.
Microsoft first posted notice of this update on it’s WHS blog on November
20, 2007.

providing them with a “trusted SSL certificate” for their home servers. That means customers will be able to access their home server from
outside the home more seamlessly, without any security warnings." according to the blog post at the WHS blog.
The update will allow
you to obtain a trusted certificate for your WHS computer during Remote Access configuration for you personalized domain. After you apply this update,
you will no longer receive certificate warnings in the Web browser when you access your Web site by using an external URL, such as
https://your_name.homeserver.com.

28.06.2008Dell: Microsoft warnings haven't hurt Linux uptake
Claims made by Microsoft that Linux violates its software patent have not affected sales of Linux-based hardware, according to Michael Dell.
Speaking to CNET News.com sister site ZDNet UK at a conference Thursday, Dell's chief executive said his company has seen Linux uptake
for servers increase faster than Windows server products, despite Microsoft's claims.
"On the server side Linux continues to
grow nicely, a bit faster than Windows," said Dell in an interview during the
Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in Orlando. "We're seeing a move to Linux in critical applications, and Linux migration has not slowed
down."
However, for those customers who might be concerned about whether Microsoft's claims of patent violation could result in
legal action, Dell added that there were "certainly mechanisms if customers are concerned about patents."

03.03.2008Despite security firm warnings, its business as usual for malware writers
During US Thanksgiving week, there are a few stories you can expect to hear every year. People are traveling! The airports are busy! Black Friday
sales are coming! And prepare for spammer and malware attacks! This year is no different, with security firms coming out of the woodwork in order to
remind us to stay vigilant throughout this holiday season, for the hackers and scammers are out en masse and poised to attack vulnerable
cybershoppers. But for malware writers, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are business as usual.
"Symantec Corp historically
observes an uptick in spam volume coming into the year-end holidays, and 2007 is no exception," a Symantec spokesperson told Ars. "
pammers are
smart, leveraging some of the most popular products on the market in their scams," which they use to target the growing number of consumers who do
their holiday shopping online (39 percent of all consumers, according to the company). The most popular items to spam consumers with include laptops,
replica watches, business cards, male enhancement drugs ("always a popular sale during the holidays," says Symantec), digital music players,
software, cell phones, video games, weight loss drugs, and gift cards.

Experts warn of satnav hacking
Security experts are warning
that mischievous hackers could
send bogus signals to
satellite navigation systems
via the radio. The problem
centres on the Radio Data
System, which allows FM
broadcasters to include data
in radio transmissions that
many satnav systems pick up.
The data is commonly used to
give traffic or station ID
information, but this can now
be hijacked, according to
researchers.
Andrea
Barisani, chief security
engineer at consultancy
Inverse Path, and Daniele
Bianco, a hardware hacker at
the same company, built a
system that can generate false
warnings for drivers using
off-the-shelf components. The
messages range from standard
traffic alerts to warnings of
an "exploding bomb ahead" or
that the road is "blocked by
a bullfight".

Windows Home Server Update on the way...
Windows Home Server Team: Hi all. Next week on Tuesday, Nov 27 we will release a new update for Windows Home Server software. This is a scheduled
update - part of the ongoing process of continually enhancing the customer experience with Windows Home Server. The new functionality will be
downloaded via Windows Update and made available to existing Windows Home Server customers.
Details are available here, but the main benefit of the
update is that it will improve the remote access experience for Windows Home Server users by providing them with a trusted SSL certificate for their
home servers. That means customers will be able to access their home server from outside the home more seamlessly, without any security warnings. The
Windows Home Server team worked closely with Windows Live Domains and GoDaddy, a leading provider of Web domain addresses, to provide the certificate
for the homeserver.com web pages customers use for remote access.
In addition, this months update provides a new Delete All
button to let users delete all home computer backups that are stored on the home server, as well as a few improvements to the Shared Folders and
Server Storage components of Windows Home Server.

Security warnings over Windows Vista
Microsoft is coming under
increasing fire over the
security of its Windows
software.
While
criticims of Windows security
vulnerabilities are nothing
new, Microsoft plans to take
control of security on Windows
Vista, their next release.
This means that
third-party software vendors
could be prevented from
protecting Windows Vista.
This comes after a
series of serious security
flaws were found in Windows
applications, with Powerpoint,
Word, and Internet Explorer
all vulnerable - and still
unpatched.
It
remains an issue of acute
embarrassment for Microsoft -
that a billion-dollar
multinational software
development company which
receives extensive revenues
from licence fees - not simply
allows the security exploits
to go unnoticed until
third-parties notify of them,
but also leaves user machines
vulnerable while third-party
security companies are able to
roll out fixes to the
public.
Additionally, third party
security development companies
have already released a patch
for the flaw - weeks before
Microsoft plans to release
their own version.
