Microsoft to simplify downgrades from Vista to XP

Microsoft is simplifying the processes via which its PC-maker partners will be able to provide "downgrade" rights from Windows Vista to Windows XP for their customers.

Microsoft will implement the first of the policy changes for its Gold Certified (top-tier) OEM partners within the next couple of weeks. The company will streamline downgrade-rights policies and procedures for the broader channel somewhat later, said John Ball, general manager of Microsofts U.S. Systems Group.

Under current licensing terms, Microsoft allows customers buying PCs preloaded with Windows Vista Ultimate and Vista Business to roll back to Windows XP until they are ready to make the move to Vista. For OEMs, the process via which these rights can be activated has been quite cumbersome, Ball acknowledged...

Official: Microsoft extends Windows XP's stay

Bowing to pressure from customers and computer makers, Microsoft plans to keep Windows XP around a little longer.

Large PC manufacturers were slated to have to stop selling XP after January 31. However, they have successfully lobbied Microsoft to allow them to continue selling PCs with all flavors of Windows XP preloaded until June 30, a further five months. Microsoft also plans to keep XP on retail shelves longer and will allow computer makers in emerging markets to build machines with Windows XP Starter Edition until June 2010.

The move indicates the continued demand for the older operating system, some nine months after Windows Vista hit store shelves.

In recent weeks, several PC makers launched programs that allow new PC buyers to more easily "downgrade" their Vista Business and Vista Ultimate machines to Windows XP. Fujitsu, which was among those lobbying for the change, has started including an XP restore disc in the box with all of its laptops running Vista Business. ..

Will Vista Pump Up Microsoft's Future Profits?

While the release of Microsoft's next-generation Windows operating system is still months away, Microsoft execs already are projecting strong sales.

Here's why they are so bullish. Microsoft executives already are counting their Vista chickens before the next-generation Windows release has hatched.

Microsoft expects 200 million new PCs to ship with Vista preloaded in the first 24 months that the operating system is available, said Michael Sievert, corporate vice president, Windows Product Management & Marketing. Comparatively, Windows 95 shipped on 67 million new PCs during its first two years of life.

I say crapware; you say 'performance enhancer'

Mary Jo Foley: Do you consider Microsoft products like Windows Defender antispyware tool and Windows Live OneCare security/management service to be crapware that you don’t want preloaded on your PC, or performance-enhancement tools?

In an e-mail exchange this week with a spokesperson for Microsoft’s OEM unit over what kinds of tweaks Microsoft is encouraging its PC partners to make to provide a better end-to-end user experience, I learned that Microsoft is touting some of its products as de-crapifiers. Specifically, the Redmondians are telling partners and customers that Windows Defender and Windows Live OneCare can be used to clean up their PCs so they run better and faster.

Here is part of the message I received from the Microsoft spokesperson...

Windows XP Departs: Good Riddance or Sad Farewell?

The forced retirement of Microsoft's Windows XP is set--with some exceptions--for Monday. To quell XP separation anxiety and the rancor of seething Vista haters, Microsoft has agreed to offer Windows XP updates and security patches until April 2014.

However, PC retailers such as Dell have pretty much stopped selling computers preloaded with the venerable OS. XP's disappearance has stirred much conversation. In fact, more than 200,000 people signed a petition to keep XP--a campaign championed by our sibling publication InfoWorld. In the long run, though, Microsoft refused to yield to the entreaties of XP-philes.

Microsoft Still Cleaning Up With Windows

Whether from Linux open-source technology or virtualization, many have predicted the demise of Microsoft's traditional software business. So far the company that built its house on Windows isn't caving in to soothsayers.

The latest figures from consulting firms indicate that although Linux sales are growing by number of servers shipped with the operating system, the software is losing ground to Microsoft's Windows.

Microsoft picked up 2 percentage points, bringing its market share to 67.1% of servers shipped during the second quarter, according to data from Gartner. Of 2.06 million servers shipped overall, nearly 1.4 million came preloaded with proprietary OS. That works out to an extra 77,650 Microsoft-based servers sold during the quarter, year over year.

Linux accounted for 22.8% of server shipments, down from 23.1% the year before. In spite of the lost ground in market share, strong sales of servers created a bigger pie for the slight growth of commercial Linux.

Top OEMs to sell Windows XP PCs down to the wire

Three of the top four PC sellers worldwide plan to sell systems with Windows XP right up to the Microsoft-mandated deadline of June 30. Of the four, only Dell plans to call it quits before the last day of this month.

Microsoft has set June 30 as the final day of Windows XP availability to retailers and major computer makers, although the company recently also said that the date won't mark a sudden disappearance of the old operating system. "The exact cut-off day for selling Windows XP is determined by OEMs and retailers, who can keep selling standalone versions as well as PCs with Windows XP preloaded by OEMs distributed prior to June 30, 2008, as long as their supplies last ," a Microsoft spokeswoman said two weeks ago in an e-mail.

Windows XP to be phased out by year's end

Computer makers have been told they'll no longer be able to get Windows XP OEM by the end of this year, despite consumer resistance to Vista and its compatibility problems.

By early 2008, Microsoft's contracts with computer makers will require companies to only sell Vista-loaded machines. "The OEM version of XP Professional goes next January," said Frank Luburic, senior ThinkPad product manager for Lenovo. "At that point, they'll have no choice."

Despite Microsoft's relentless promotion of Vista, manufacturers are still seeing plenty of demand from customers for systems preloaded with XP, especially in the finicky SOHO market.
