01.08.2006How Windows Vista Handles Wireless Networking
Each new version of Windows has made significant improvements in the operating system's networking capabilities. Back in the days of Windows 95 and
Windows 98, networking was a complicated affair for technical experts only; you could set up and configure a network from within Windows, but it took
a lot of work. Things got much better with Windows XP, where networking became more or less a plug-and-play operationalbeit one that required a lot of
user interaction and didn't always work as promised.
With Windows Vista, things again have changed for the better. Microsoft
completely rewrote the networking stack in Vista, which means that networking not only is more reliable, it's also much easier to set up. In fact, in
most instances you don't have to do much setup at all; Windows Vista recognizes your network and equipment, and automatically configures the system
as necessary. (At least theoretically; networking in Vista can still be counterintuitive at times, and occasionally things don't work quite as
promised.)
This is good news if you're setting up a new network for your Vista-based computersbut also useful if you're
connecting a Vista PC to an existing network or Wi-Fi hot spot.

13.01.2009Symantec: Windows Vista less
Secure than XP
According to Symantec, Windows
Vista is very likely to be
less secure than Windows XP by
the time it comes out.
Symantec has supposedly
already found many security
flaws in Windows Vista's
networking code. Symantec also
says Vista's new code is what
is problematic.
According to the Symantec
report, "Microsoft has
removed a large body of tried
and tested code and replaced
it with freshly written code,
complete with new corner cases
and defects. This may provide
for a more stable networking
stack in the long term, but
stability will suffer in the
short term."
This is obviously surprising
for Microsoft employees, who
have declared so many times
that Vista would be more
secure than XP. Microsoft
answered by a simple
explanation that the software
is still in beta stage and
that numerous improvements
would be made until it comes
out.

09.01.2009Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2 improves networking

14.11.2008Users may need Vista to make most of Server 2008
Companies installing Windows Server 2008 may have to buy extra Microsoft software, such as Windows Vista, to use more advanced features, analyst firm

John Enck, research director at Gartner, said that although making additional investments would not be a
barrier to using the operating system, companies should be clear that installing Windows Server 2008 could influence their future choice of software
applications.
"Combining Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in the same environment strengthens TCP/IP networking, network

15.10.2005How to fix Vista's network bottlenecks
As much as I enjoy using Vista, I've definitely noticed that in some networking activities, it definitely seems to struggle. Particularly compared
with Windows XP.
For the most part it's not a problem - I just assumed that Vista's beefy network stack was responsible, and made a
mental note to fix it at some point. And then forgot.
But recently I encountered a really frustrating problem. Using Remote Desktop
Protocol (RDP) to connect from a Vista Enterprise machine to a Windows 2003 server, the performance was so woeful that I was starting to worry whether
there was a problem with the server.
As it happens, my fears about the server were unfounded, but the thought that Vista's networking
stack was to blame turned out to be correct. The Next Generation TCP/IP stack in Windows Vista supports something called Receive Window Auto-Tuning.
This is nothing to do with the RDP "window" you see on the screen, but rather a TCP buffer which TCP/IP clients use to ensure smooth
transmission.
