How Windows Vista Handles Wireless Networking

Each new version of Windows has made significant improvements in the operating system's networking capabilities. Back in the days of Windows 95 and Windows 98, networking was a complicated affair for technical experts only; you could set up and configure a network from within Windows, but it took a lot of work. Things got much better with Windows XP, where networking became more or less a plug-and-play operationalbeit one that required a lot of user interaction and didn't always work as promised.

With Windows Vista, things again have changed for the better. Microsoft completely rewrote the networking stack in Vista, which means that networking not only is more reliable, it's also much easier to set up. In fact, in most instances you don't have to do much setup at all; Windows Vista recognizes your network and equipment, and automatically configures the system as necessary. (At least theoretically; networking in Vista can still be counterintuitive at times, and occasionally things don't work quite as promised.)

This is good news if you're setting up a new network for your Vista-based computersbut also useful if you're connecting a Vista PC to an existing network or Wi-Fi hot spot.

Microsoft study: Vista improves networking

Companies that deploy Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista in tandem could see more than a threefold increase in networking performance for file transfers, downloading roaming profiles for mobile users and accessing files on a portal, according to a Microsoft-commissioned study conducted by the Tolly Group.

In a 38-page white paper titled "Enhanced Network Performance with Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008," the Tolly Group compares the networking performance for file access on WANs and LANs using various configurations of Windows Server 2003 R2 or 2008 on the backend and XP SP2 or Vista on the frontend.

Not surprisingly, the combination of the newest operating systems brings the best gains in network performance in large part, Tolly concludes, because of an upgraded TCP/IP stack and updates to thefile-sharing Server Message Block (SMB ) protocol...

Vista Networking: Part 1 - The Dragon's Trap

What if you were granted the gift of human flight in exchange for possesing the average land speed of a duckbill platypus? Would you take it?

Such is the riddle proposed by Microsoft. Networking in Vista has been retooled from the ground up, promising unprecedented (at least in the world of Microsoft computing) advances in the field of TCP/IP, UDP, and many other networking protocols and services. But the company that today's home user and Information Systems strategists around the world have grown up with (and grown wary of when upgrade season comes) is still the same Microsoft it has always been.

So join me as we take a trip through Windows Networking... Vista style.

Vista Stakes Its Future on Security

Microsoft Corp. is banking on enhancements to what it has dubbed the fundamentals to entice enterprises to upgrade to the next version of Windows, known as Vista.

The company will use upcoming industry shows to sing the praises of improvements to the Windows networking stack and secure networking techniques such as server and domain isolation to sell both Vista and "Longhorn," the planned update to Windows Server.

However, Microsoft may be swimming upstream against current technology trends and advocating changes that could roil enterprise networks, according to one analyst.

Microsoft will use the RSA Conference in San Jose, Calif., in February and the company's TechEd conference in Boston in June to demonstrate and evangelize the security enhancements in Vista and its upcoming "Longhorn" version of Windows, said Mike Schutz, group product manager for Microsoft's Windows Server Division, in Redmond, Wash...

Symantec: Windows Vista less Secure than XP

According to Symantec, Windows Vista is very likely to be less secure than Windows XP by the time it comes out. Symantec has supposedly already found many security flaws in Windows Vista's networking code. Symantec also says Vista's new code is what is problematic.

According to the Symantec report, "Microsoft has removed a large body of tried and tested code and replaced it with freshly written code, complete with new corner cases and defects. This may provide for a more stable networking stack in the long term, but stability will suffer in the short term."

This is obviously surprising for Microsoft employees, who have declared so many times that Vista would be more secure than XP. Microsoft answered by a simple explanation that the software is still in beta stage and that numerous improvements would be made until it comes out.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2 improves networking

Although news of this release is already a couple of days old, new features in Service Pack 3 RC2 for Windows XP that users can expect from this package includes: stronger networking protocols with black hole router detection, and Network Access Protection, with Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) that was provided for in Windows Vista. But as this isn’t a final version, if your system has been stable and running fine, I would suggest you not to upgrade for a while and let the bugs and kinks be fully worked out. Take my word for it; it’ll definitely be worth the wait.

Service Pack 3 adds several networking and security improvements, and compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 security credential providers. It also incorporates features previously available individually as separate updates, such as Micorsoft Windows Imaging Component (WIC), Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0, and Wi-Fi Protected Access 2. Users may need Vista to make most of Server 2008

Companies installing Windows Server 2008 may have to buy extra Microsoft software, such as Windows Vista, to use more advanced features, analyst firm Gartner has said.

John Enck, research director at Gartner, said that although making additional investments would not be a barrier to using the operating system, companies should be clear that installing Windows Server 2008 could influence their future choice of software applications.

"Combining Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in the same environment strengthens TCP/IP networking, network access protection and administering policies as well as quality of service settings. However, Windows Server also provides 'plumbing' that influences the selection of other products," he said.

New IE, Media Player Features Expected to Debut in Windows Vista Refresh

Testers will soon have a new Community Technology Preview build, the second one that Microsoft has issued for its next-gen Windows client. Beta 2 is looking like December, sources say.

Micro soft is poised to release to testers the second Community Technology Preview (CTP) release of Windows Vista, paving the way for a second full-fledged beta, which is now expected in December.

Among the new features which could find their way into the updated build are a number of Internet Explorer 7.0 enhancements; the resurrected "Sidebar" task pane; Windows Media Player 11.0; and new networking functionality.

Robe rt McLaws, president of Interscape Technologies, said that Microsoft released CTP 2 of Vista on Thursday night.

How to fix Vista's network bottlenecks

As much as I enjoy using Vista, I've definitely noticed that in some networking activities, it definitely seems to struggle. Particularly compared with Windows XP.

For the most part it's not a problem - I just assumed that Vista's beefy network stack was responsible, and made a mental note to fix it at some point. And then forgot.

But recently I encountered a really frustrating problem. Using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to connect from a Vista Enterprise machine to a Windows 2003 server, the performance was so woeful that I was starting to worry whether there was a problem with the server.

As it happens, my fears about the server were unfounded, but the thought that Vista's networking stack was to blame turned out to be correct. The Next Generation TCP/IP stack in Windows Vista supports something called Receive Window Auto-Tuning. This is nothing to do with the RDP "window" you see on the screen, but rather a TCP buffer which TCP/IP clients use to ensure smooth transmission.
