No one was expecting Crysis to run on their 6-year old Gateway POS9001, but the game's final specs are, in a word, heftymaybe a tad heftier than you had imagined. PC gamers looking to spec out their new hardware set up will be thrilled to read that Crytek has revealed the final hardware requirements for its hyper-pretty first person shooter, set to launch on November 13.

The minimum and required configurations are after the jump. Vista gamers, brace yourselves.

Processor - 2.8GHz or faster (XP); 3.2GHz or faster * (Vista)

Ultra High-End PSU Roundup

As PC systems are demanding more and more power, the power supply manufacturers are reacting by releasing units rated for higher power output. We can all thank NVIDIA and ATI, among others, for this trend, as we have seen an escalation in ridiculously high demands for power supplies with the latest graphics chips. That this power is in most cases unnecessary should be clear to everyone who owns such a card or wants to buy one.

One reason such requirements are overkill is that the resolution you are running is largely responsible for higher GPU requirements, which in turn leads to more power hungry systems. If you are running a top-end video card (or two) at just 1280x1024, much of the performance potential is going to waste. Still, multiple GPUs under load will still require a beefy PSU, generally starting at 400W and going up from there, depending on the rest of the system. If you're running a 30" LCD on the other hand - particularly with overclocking - we have seen power requirements break 600W in worst-case scenarios.

Enable Aurora Bootscreen in Windows Vista

The original Vista Bootscreen is very similar to Windows 2000, and is very bland and boring (you know, with the little catepillar bar scrolling from left-to-right). But did you know that Vista comes with a much better highly visual bootscreen? Did you know how easy it is to enable it? No?

Microsoft may not have enabled this by default because of potential hardware issues, but that doesnt make sense because the minimum video card requirements to even run Vista should handle the new bootscreen without any problem. In either case, here is how to make Vista look that much cooler with the "Aurora" bootscreen...

Complying with data protection legal requirements in a Windows shop

When the information security staff, compliance officers and legal counsel say to get the systems in IT compliance, what should Windows administrators do?

The best way to address privacy and data protection compliance is to look at the applicable laws and find common requirements. That's a more effective way to do it than to address piecemeal IT compliance requirements one law at a time.

To start, administrators should identify common requirements within all the applicable laws, regulations, standards and contracts. They should map out the commonalities within a matrix that can then be used for easy reference to clearly see all the commonalities.

Windows Vista System Requirements Released

Microsoft has updated its Get Ready Web site to include the minimum system requirements to run Windows Vista. A Windows Vista Capable PC must include at least a CPU running at 800MHz, 512 MB of RAM, a DirectX 9 graphics card capable of at least 800x600, a CD-ROM drive and a 20 GB HDD with at least 15 GB free for the install. Of course, systems with bare minimum specifications will be unable to run Vista in the Aero interface.

In order a PC to be certified as "Windows Vista Premium Ready," it must have at least a 1 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory, Pixel Shader 2.0, DVD-ROM drive, a sound card, internet access and 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space. For Windows XP, users who did not meet the minimal requirements for XP Home (300 MHz, 128 MB) were still able to install and run the operating system, albeit rather slowly. It remains to be seen if Windows Vista will allow installs on machines lesser than minimal specification.

Updated "Unofficial" System Requirements For Crysis

Crysis-Online has the "unofficial" updated minimum and recommended system requirements for the upcoming mega-smash hit Crytek masterpiece Crysis. Wow, that's a mouthful eh? Check these out.

Minimum Requirements
Recommended Requirements
Also of note from the report are a couple of other things. Mainly that Crysis will run on both DX9 and DX10 and on Windows Vista and Windows XP. A video card supporting Shader Model 2.0 is the minimum, period. Don't bother with anything less. The CryEngine 2 as its called, can scale back quite a bit, around 2 years according to Crysis-Online, and scale ahead around 1.5 years or so. Crysis will utilize multi threaded CPU's which means the game will support Quad Core processors. A single Geforce 7800GTX will be able to pretty much max out the game.

Now remember, these are not confirmed specs, but I wouldn't doubt they are pretty accurate at this point. Time to upgrade the old PC folks?

However the school will still have to meet the same requirements as any other New York school, so traditional math and English lessons haven't just disappeared.

Hacking Your Graphics Card

With GeForce 8800 GT availability issues, other manufacturers are selling this popular video card with different clock speeds and prices. To save a buck or two, and possibly squeeze out some extra performance, ExtremeTech has a helpful primer on overclocking your 8800 GT with some very easy hacks.

If you go into this with the right mindset, you can end up with a card that's just as good as those pricey overclocked ones. But remember that you won't be able to return the card for repair if something goes wrong. If that thought gives you the willies, we recommend paying a few bucks more for a factory overclocked card.

UK spent 6.6 billion on new ID's, didnt buy one card reader

The British government has spent 6.6 billion dollars for a new identity card program that is based around biometrics. Like any new ID card program it is designed to help enhance security for everyone from public officials to private citizens. The problem is that there is not one card reader in the entire country, not at any police station, customs locations, anywhere in the entire country. It would be understandable if the government had a plan to purchase card readers but it does not. "We have always said that we would roll out the scheme incrementally. The card will not be as useful as it could be until we have got the volumes out there.

Google reverses itself on video refunds

After shutting down its video download store last week, Google angered some Google Video customers who had paid for movies but were locked out when the store was shut down. At first, the search giant offered to refund customers in credit to their Google Checkout accounts but after wide criticism, Google admitted that the move was "self-serving" and announced that it would give credit card refunds to anyone who had ever bought a video on the site. In addition to the credit card refunds, those who received Google Checkout credits for videos could keep those as well. " Think of it as an additional 'We're sorry we goofed' credit ," said Bindu Reddy, the store's product manager.

Google has said that the company wants to concentrate more of its attention on video search and its video-sharing site, YouTube. The company has also not ruled out returning to video-on-demand in the future.
