jcxp.net - 30.08.2007Windows Vista Validation Update (KB929391)
Microsoft have just posted a
Windows Vista Genuine
Validation Update to Windows
Update. The update provides
the latest information to the
Windows Vista validation
components, and is marked as
an "Important" update.
It seems that the aim
of the update is to further
prevent "cracked" copies of
Windows Vista from being able
to run. Install the Windows
Vista validation component
updates to make sure that your
copy of Windows Vista is
genuine and is correctly
licensed. If a problem is
detected, the update will
provide additional
instructions.
jcxp.net - 15.12.2006Addressing WGA validation issues
From what I personally noticed while reading about the WGA issue around the web, it was much more than just a "very few customers were affected".
Perhaps Microsoft should rethink their validation strategy after this near-disaster?
Earlier today (25 August) we began
receiving reports of Windows Vista customers running genuine systems but experiencing failures when attempting a Windows Genuine Advantage validation.
This situation has since been resolved and validations are now being processed successfully.
We've since learned that very
few customers were affected. Sr. Product Manager Alex Kochis and a team of engineers have been working on the issue and has blogged about it to keep customers
up-to-date. Customers who received an incorrect validation response can fix their system by revalidating. I'd encourage anyone who received a validation failure since Friday evening to visit this site now; after
successfully revalidating, any affected system should be rebooted to ensure that genuine-only features are restored.
Alex will be
updating his blog with information as more information comes to light.

betanews.com - 27.11.2008Microsoft issues warning to VLK customers over WGA fail
Phil Liu of Microsoft has
reported problems with the
Windows Genuine Advantage
authentication method for
Volume License Key (VLK)
customers and a temporary
work-around.
"Just
a heads up on an issue related
to (Volume) VLK validation.
On Monday and Tuesday of this
week (Oct 2-3), some VLK
customers may have experienced
problems with WGA validation.
If a Windows XP system with a
VLK recently began failing
validation or reporting as
non-genuine, then they may
experiencing this problem.
The problem was the result of
an issue on the Microsoft
server side, and we are still
investigating the cause. We
regret any inconvenience this
may have caused you, and I am
personally working to get the
information you need to
resolve this issue.
We do have steps available
that affected customers can
take to correct the problem,
and we'll continue to work on
solutions and post them on
this forum."

neowin.net - 05.10.2006Pirating Windows? No free Security Essentials for you!
Microsoft has confirmed via its Genuine Windows Blog that only those Windows users running genuine, validated copies will be able to download and
install the new Microsoft Security Essentials software. The Director of Microsoft's Genuine Windows team, Alex Kochis, stated in his post that,
"During installation, you'll be asked to validate Windows running on your PC to make sure that it's genuine." Windows validation is by no
means a new technology, and has been implemented in many of Microsoft's software packages with a few notable exceptions: Internet Explorer 8, for
example, and Windows Update which allows users running pirated copies of Windows to download essential security patches without validation.

neowin.net - 01.10.2009Where are the Extras?
Some people may have noticed that the Windows Ultimate Extra Language packs went missing over the weekend, many suspected a prelude to new updated Extras. Turns out
it was in internal Microsoft process change that inadvertently caused the currently offered language packs to be withdrawn. They have resolved the
issue put the language packs back up and the contents have not been changed...here is a little more detail.
The fact that Microsoft has relaxed its antipiracy mechanism built into Windows Vista concomitantly with the release of Service Pack 1 failed to stop hackers from providing a crack for the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Various reports point out that Genuine Advantage Validation and Notifications versions 1.7.69.1 (1.7.0069.1) and 1.7.69.2 released in March 2008, following the March 18 availability of Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, have been cracked.
The workaround is designed to be integrated with pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista in order to render useless the WGA Validation mechanism. According to the reports, applying the WGA crack will permit users of counterfeit versions of Windows to access and download items from Windows Update, Microsoft Download Center and Microsoft Update. The pirated operating systems with the cracked WGA will pass all validations on Microsoft's websites and offer anything from updates to applications that are restricted to users of genuine operating systems only.

betanews.com - 17.11.2005Microsoft cites human error in anti-piracy malfunction
Last week's malfunction of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy mechanism was caused when new software code was accidentally put on the servers running the system, before those servers had been made ready for the code, according to a post last night by Alex Kochis, WGA senior product manager. Kochis writes:"Nothing more than human error started it all. Pre-production code was sent to production servers. The production servers had not yet been upgraded with a recent change to enable stronger encryption/decryption of product keys during the activation and validation processes. The result of this is that the production servers declined activation and validation requests that should have passed."
Kochis explains in the post that the problem made some computers fail the anti-piracy validation and activation processes, causing them to lose advanced Windows features and get a "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message, until the WGA system was fixed and people were able to properly activate and validate their computers.

betanews.com - 30.11.2006Microsoft Remains Silent on AutoPatcher
Yesterday morning an Internet Investigator representing Microsoft called me at home requesting that Neowin cease all activity with AutoPatcher, a program headed by Antonis Kaladis and endorsed by Neowin for little under 4 years. Antonis received a standard take down request email through his AutoPatcher.com email address. We complied by pulling the forums on Neowin and the download page at AutoPatcher.com.
The news was quickly picked up by the likes of CNET, Slashdot and others but as of this posting we are yet to receive any sort of clear explanation as to why this decision was made 3 years after the program had been widely adopted by Neowin members, computer magazines and the industries system admins who use the program to speed up the installing of corporate machines.
A Microsoft Featured Communities representative as well as the Internet Investigator handling the case has pledged to look into the situation to find out exactly what prompted this sudden move. The only short explanation offered was the possibility of delivering malicious files with the package, something the AutoPatcher team has never done.
Updates which require WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) validation are included, and can be installed (since the WGA validation only takes place on the machine that downloads them, not the one that is installing them) which theoretically bypasses the validation check users would normally have to go through if updating through Windows Update. Antonis had asked when WGA became common if this would affect the AutoPatcher project and the concept of administrative updates and a Microsoft representative said "No", arguing that the purpose behind WGA was mostly educational. The WGA tool itself (the one offered by Windows Update as a critical update) is included in AutoPacher, though not marked for installation by default.

neowin.net - 30.08.2007Internet Explorer 7 update: Now WGA-free
Microsoft has issued an updated Internet Explorer (IE) 7 release that no longer requires Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation in order to download.
Program Manager Steve Reynolds announced the news on October 4 on Microsoft’s IE Team blog:“Because Microsoft takes its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, were updating the IE7 installation experience to make it available as broadly as possible to all Windows users. With todays ‘Installation and Availability Update,’ Internet Explorer 7 installation will no longer require Windows Genuine Advantage validation and will be available to all Windows XP users.”
WGA is the anti-piracy mechanism Microsoft uses to check whether users are running “genuine” Windows before allowing them to download certain product updates, fixes, white papers and other related information.
winbeta.org - 04.10.2007Office Genuine Advantage (OGA), Now Mandatory
If you don't like the mandatory anti-piracy checks that Microsoft now enforces for Windows, brace yourself. The Microsoft Office productivity and collaboration suite is about to get a similar program.
The company's Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) program will require mandatory validation of Office software starting October 27, the software vendor quietly disclosed today. After that date, any Office Online templates downloaded from within the Office 2007 Microsoft Office System applications will require validation of legitimacy.
Similarly, starting in January, users of Office Update will have to validate the legitimacy of their Office software before they can use the service, Microsoft added.
Users absolutely hated the first iteration of the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program, and their protests pressured the company into revising it about a year after it launched in July 2005.
Microsoft said in a press statement that the validation process will be "quick and simple" for users. The OGA program, currently in the testing phase, is now available in 26 languages worldwide. OGA is a sibling program to WGA; both automatically check a user's version of Microsoft software to ensure it is not counterfeit or pirated.
neowin.net - 27.10.2006VeriSign Issues IE7 Extended Validation SSL Certificate
New Groundbreaking EV UpgraderTechnology Will Enable All IE7 Browsers on Microsoft Windows XP Client Systems to Also Display the Green Address Bar
VeriSign), the leading provider of intelligent infrastructure for the networked world, today announced the general availability of its Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates, which help protect users against online fraudulent activity by providing third party verification of a Web site's authenticity. These new certificates support Microsoft's IE7 and Vista operating system and also incorporate VeriSign's unique EV Upgrader technology enabling all Windows XP clients using IE7 to display the same green address bar and other interface enhancements as Windows Vista clients. VeriSign issued the first of these certificates to Overstock.com, one of the largest online retailers in North America.
"As one of the first Web sites to implement the new VeriSign Extended Validation SSL Certificates, Overstock.com continues to demonstrate leadership in making online shopping safer," said Jacob Hawkins, senior vice president of marketing at Overstock.com. "When customers see the green browser bar and trusted VeriSign Secured Seal on our site, they can be confident that their online transactions are secure."
neowin.net - 12.12.2006Update on WGA Validation Issues
We're continuing to investigate what happened but here's a quick update to yesterday's post. The issue with processing validations began Friday afternoon at about 3:30 PM Pacific time and through a combination of posts to our forum and customer support the issue was discovered by evening.
By about 11:15 AM Pacific on Saturday morning the issue affecting the validation service had been analyzed and resolved such that validations were again being processed properly. Our data shows that fewer than 12,000 systems were affected worldwide and that many of those have already revalidated and are fixed. This is encouraging news but we want to emphasize that one bad customer experience is one too many and that we're committed to learning from this experience and working to prevent this type of event from occurring again.
We're also looking into the reports of comments made about the expected length of the issue and how support inquiries were handled overall during this time. I heard a report that one of our support folks indicated that the issues would not be fixed until Tuesday, that was incorrect. We'll be looking closely at how/why that statement was made.
winbeta.org - 28.08.2007WSUS Server 2003 Fix for Vista SP1 Download
Windows Vista SP1 will be released as an update on Microsoft Update (MU). The patch is very large and there is a bug in Windows Server 2003 in the WinVerifyTrust API that will cause signing validation to fail.
What this means is that once you approve this update on a System Center Essentials 2007 server on a Windows Server 2003 server, every time the server syncs from MU it will redownload the package, fail the cert validation, and so the download will fail. The problem will continue until you install the WinVerifyTrust patch on the System Center Essentials server. This patch is a hotfix (not a public GDR), so is not intended to be widely distributed. We recommend it only be installed on the System Center Essentials server itself.
