14.09.2007Windows 7 to get parallel-processing tweaks
Microsoft has shared bits and pieces of how it is
adding new features to its development tools to
better support parallel processing. But the next release of Windows client and server also are going to incorporate changes designed to improve
their parallel-processing support.
While Microsoft execs and those who’ve managed to get their hands on
early builds of Windows 7 have focused largely on user-interface tweaks in Windows 7, there will
be some under-the-covers changes, too. Microsoft officials have said on the record that deep-level changes between Windows Vista and Windows 7 will be
kept to a minimum, in order to insure application and driver compatibility. Yet Microsoft officials acknowledge that Win32, the core of Windows, is
not suited for asynchronous, concurrent computing.

28.04.2009Mounting WIM Images from Windows Explorer

05.11.200710 top Vista tweaks, part 2
Ed Bott: As I noted in the first installment of this series, some of my favorite productivity-enhancing techniques dont involve custom code or
registry edits. Instead, they involve learning how the basic building blocks of Windows work, and then rearranging those components to cut steps out
of the tasks you perform most often.
In todays installment of this two-part series, I share some of my favorite tweaks for
getting maximum mileage out of Windows Search. I also explain the inner workings of volume shadow copies and how you can make better use of these
automatic backups with System Restore and the Previous Versions feature. I show how to get quick access to your local and network data files by
combining shortcuts in a single, easy-to-reach location, and I explain why hybrid sleep should be the default on every desktop PC.

18.06.2008Microsoft tweaks anti-piracy check for Windows XP
Microsoft has updated software that verifies whether a copy of Windows is genuine in its Windows XP Professional edition, making it similar to the
notification in Windows Vista and thus more persistently visible to users. In a blog posting attributed to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft director of
product marketing and management, the company said it made the changes to the Windows Genuine Notification (WGA) alerts for XP Pro because it is
"the product edition that is most often stolen."
Now when a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next
time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This
will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen's background. Previously, this was not a part of the WGA notification for Windows
XP Pro.

Since the introduction of the first firewall built into the operating system (Internet Connection Firewall) of Windows XP, Microsoft has steadily

evolutionary than revolutionary, it does provide some nice tweaks to make it more user-friendly and at least one big change that makes a difference to
mobile users. In this article, we will take a look at the Windows Firewall in Windows 7 and show you how to configure it with multiple active firewall

22.12.2006Microsoft changes 'Windows Genuine Advantage' name
Microsoft will be changing to name of it's activation and validation system from "Windows Genuine Advantage" to "Windows Activation
Technologies" according to a report by Mary-Jo Foley. However, the "Genuine" brand isn't completely disappearing. A press release states that
Microsoft will continue to deliver genuine updates and notifications for XP users. The program has been criticized for its punishment tactics and
false-positive results, even though Microsoft has fixed some of these problems in Vista SP1. According to Microsoft, Windows 7's activation will
be built on the same software protection platform that was part of Vista, with some minor tweaks made for Windows 7.

02.01.2008Featured: Windows Vista Service Pack 1
It's no secret now that a
pre-beta version of Windows
Vista's first service pack,
Service Pack 1 (SP1), has
leaked to the general public.
So, what's new?
I can tell you
straight away, that if you
were expecting a massive
overhaul to the user
interface, you will be
disappointed. After posting
our usual screenshot gallery,
some of our early SP1-adopting
members took it upon
themselves to snoop around and
find what differences, if any,
there was.
Well, it turns out that
hidden within the little nooks
and crannies of SP1, there are
a few new interesting UI
tweaks. Thanks to Long Zheng
for bringing our findings to
light, feel free to read on
about them at his blog -
here.
Some of our members are still
actively searching for more
changes, so keep an eye out on
our screenshots thread (Link
below).
But we all know that UI
isn't everything. One of
Vista's biggest "downers"
was its performance, or lack
thereof. The general voice of
users is that Vista's
performance is nowhere near
that of its predecessor,
Windows XP. However, SP1 has
changed that. Most users will
notice straight away that the
general responsiveness of
Vista has been greatly
optimized. So, is it as good
as XP now? Not quite, but
it's not far off. However,
let's not forget that this is
still Pre-Beta; we've got a
long road ahead of us.
