Windows on Small Notebook PCs: The Momentum Continues in the US and the UK

Brandon LeBlanc: On the eve of the Computex, the largest computer exhibition in Asia and the second largest in the world, we got word that PC World, the largest electronics retailer in the UK, is de-assorting (i.e., getting rid of) all of the Linux small notebook PCs in their stores and going all-Windows. It's pretty big news from across the pond that theyre making this move, but whats even more important is the "why" behind the decision.

Via Announces One-Watt Processor

CPU-maker Via Technologies has unveiled its 500MHz Eden CPU which it claims is the most power-efficient x86 processor yet produced. The new chip, joining Via's ultra-low voltage processor family designed primarily for ultra-mobile applications, draws only a single watt of power when in use, and just 0.1 watt when idle. Richard Brown, vice president of corporate marketing at Via, claimed that Eden's design " defines our 'small is beautiful' strategy " and " provides a way for embedded developers to push the market forward ". Eden, along with several customer boards, will be showcased at the Embedded System Conference Taiwan, held on 23-24 August 2007 in Taipei.

Screen swivels its crystals for a better view

A computer screen that knows just where its viewer is and automatically adjusts itself to provide better images has been developed by researchers in Taiwan.

Their technique prevents users from seeing a blurred or distorted image when viewing a liquid crystal display (LCD) from an angle instead of straight on.

The Taiwanese researchers have developed a prototype display connected to a miniature camera that tracks the location of a viewer. Software then calculates how to adjust the liquid crystals within the display to produce the clearest possible image.

"Viewing angle is an inherent, fundamental problem for the LCD because of its working principle," says Wayne Cheng, who developed the screen with colleague Chih-Nan Wu at the Photonics and Display Institute, National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan...

Judge says "Bully" is A-OK

On Wednesday, Florida Judge Ronald Friedman ordered Take-Two to produce the controversial game Bully for review in order to rule whether or not the game is a "public nuisance," as declared by attorney Jack Thompson. Friedman said he was willing to review the game for 100 hours or more, but apparently a couple hours were all he needed.   Friedman will not prohibit the sale of Bully in Florida. He viewed the game for two hours, with Take-Two representatives jumping around the game for him with cheat codes, and came to the conclusion there is nothing in the game that a child cannot see on TV every night. Thompson, who recently told the Washington Post he's "pretty sure that the game is harmful to minors," was apparently angry with the judge's ruling.   In an email to GamePolitics.com, Thompson said: " The judge never viewed the entire game, as he promised he would. He took unsworn testimony from 2 Take-Two employees, with no right by me to cross-examine .   "…< em> I am a Christian. I am not charged with winning these battles; I am charged with fighting them. I have done the right thing. When kids start showing up in ERs with slingshot wounds at the hands of Bully enthusiasts, don't blame me ."
