When it comes to PCs and laptops, Microsoft had little to fear with Linux as much as it does the Mac. But now the new threat to Windows comes in the form of 'netbooks' - lightweight, low-cost laptops that typically use Intel's low-powered Atom processor and don't come with substantial amounts of RAM or powerful graphics processors.

10.10.2009Is the "killer app" argument dead?
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: The other day I was talking with a bunch of other tech heads about the ongoing Windows vs. Mac vs. Linux market share war and
why, from a stats point of view, that Mac and Linux were still trailing far behind Windows.
“It all revolves around killer
apps,” pipes up one of the tech heads. “The problem with both Apple and Linux is that neither OS has a compelling killer app driving the
user base.”
The conversation then went off on to discuss apps such as Photoshop and AutoCAD and how with Windows you have a
single unified platform that’ll run almost any professional grade package that you can think of, while with Mac and Linux your choices are
restricted.

lets users run applications without actually installing them on a local machine. This allows
companies who want to make available a single image of Office or a custom line-of-business application to multiple users by pushing it out to them
without having to touch each desktop. It also enables users run applications virutally that might conflict if run simultaneously on their Windows

01.04.2009Review: HTC Touch
After the recent death of my W850, I fancied a change of Manufacturer (two Sony Ericssons in just over two years didn’t expire that much
confidence). Having previously owned a HTC BlueAngel (aka QTEK 9090), I decided on a Windows Mobile device. The one problem with my old BlueAngel was
its sheer size (huge screen with a slide out keyboard), and its brick-like weight.
I grabbed the T-Mobile variation of the Touch, quite
ingeniously named the MDA Touch. Unlike previous handsets from T-Mobile, they havent taken over the entire interface, instead, adding several useful
icons (such as webnwalk), and adding a bit of pink here and there (while I dont particularly like it, it certainly isnt annoying, and after about half
an hours usage, you simply forget its there). The one thing on my mind, however, was whether or not this phone is really the iPhone killer it has been
made out to be, or simply another handheld device which is overloaded with gimmicks.

28.09.2009Notebook players paying close attention to multi-touch
Hewlett-Packard (HP) is planning to stir up the touch panel notebook market with multi-touch technology at the end of this year, and with Windows 7,
which according to Microsoft will include features to take advantage of multi-touch capabilities, on the horizon, notebook industry players are paying
close attention to the development of multi-touch technologies.
Touch panel tablet PCs are mostly niche market products currently and
usually single-touch only due to costs and limited software support. However, notebook industry players believe multi-touch has the potential to take
off in the mainstream market thanks to handset devices such as the iPhone. Windows 7 will also be key for promoting multi-touch since it enables
multi-touch interfaces as part of the Windows operating system, the sources noted.

17.10.2008App Store: 15,000 apps and 500m downloads

started with 552 applications and a slew of problems. Developers staged boycots and complained about the Non-Disclosure Agreement which held them back
from sharing information or code, followed by complaints about alphabetical ordering on the App Store (application names would cleverly start with a
space to promote them to the top), and most recently, rejected apps due to either duplicating iPhone/iPod Touch functionality or "limited utility".

18.01.2009Microsoft to Deliver Live's 'Killer App' Mesh in April

planning to make available to a private group of external

Live
Mesh is the future of synchronized storage!
Live Mesh would seem to specifically supersede Foldershare; and SkyDrive would have very limited value in such a scenario.
Offering a seamless mesh of devices all tied together, including a cloud storage piece allowing for access to information even without access to your
devices (kiosk, friend's house, etc.), collaboration on files with the conflicts handled painlessly, and access to a mesh of devices, it could
solve lots of problems in a world that increasingly not only uses computers but many types of devices, all with a desire to be in sync.
