Touch panel tablet PCs are mostly niche market products currently and usually single-touch only due to costs and limited software support. Windows 7 will also be key for promoting multi-touch since it enables multi-touch interfaces as part of the Windows operating system, the sources noted.

A post over at the Windows Team blog has just revealed the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7. This pack brings a range of touch-friendly applications, of which we will detail below. Microsoft Surface Globe: The first of these applications is called Microsoft Surface Globe. This, as you can imagine, is a multi-touch capable globe (think Google Earth) that uses the Virtual Earth 3D engine to display a rotatable 3D version of the world.

According to reports from Stuff.tv, following a recent visit to one of LG's display factories, it appears that LG is preparing to ship multi-touch screens. There are rumors arising that the displays are for Apple and a future multi-touch iMac. Apple has stated quite clearly that multi-touch will not be a feature available on their desktop or notebook line in the near future, yet the rumor mill still brewed and with the discovery of these LG screens, is brewing further. It is also possible that these displays could be LCDs for the upcoming Windows 7 release or merely displays for manufacturers other than Apple.

Asustek plans to launch touch panel notebooks in 1H09

Asustek Computer is planning to launch notebooks featuring a touch panel in the first or second quarter of 2009, according to sources at panel makers, in addition to Eee PCs as previously reported.

Asustek's new touch panel notebooks are expected to take advantage of Windows 7, said the sources. Asustek showed concept notebooks featuring two touch panels during Computex 2008.

Stolen HTC phone with Windows Mobile 6.5 wiped remotely

Last week at the Mobile World Congress, many vendors launched their new Windows Phones and one amongst them was HTC which launched two new models - HTC Touch Pro2 and HTC Touch Diamond2. A HTC prototype Windows Phone loaded with Windows Mobile 6.5 was pick-pocketed from an executive's pocket during an evening function at the Mobile World Congress. The stolen Windows Phone is believed to be either a HTC Touch Pro2 or HTC Touch Diamond2 and was given by Microsoft to Telstra's CEO Sol Trujillo to try and test the new Windows Mobile OS. Sol handed it to an unnamed executive who was then pick-pocketed.

Microsoft has confirmed in a preview of Windows Mobile 6.5 that version 7 of the mobile OS will include multi-touch and will be targeted at the same high-end market as Apple's iPhone or most current Android phones.
