Google recently announced Knol, a new experimental website that puts information online in a way that encourages authorial attribution. Unlike
articles for the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia, which anyone is free to revise, Knol articles will have individual authors, whose pictures and
credentials will be prominently displayed alongside their work. Currently, participation in the project is by invitation only, but Google will
eventually open up Knol to the public. At that point, a given topic may end up with multiple articles by different authors. Readers will be able to
rate the articles, and the better an article's rating, the higher it will rank in Google's search results.

17.01.2008Windows '7' Technical Evangelist: Are YOU The Person We're Looking For?
Tim Sneath: It's not a state secret that
we're in the early stages of development for the next version of Windows (given the internal name of Windows '7'). The
specifics of what comes next are always the subject of fevered and sometimes inaccurate speculation, but you can be sure that we're not resting on
our laurels. Windows is one of the most complex and sophisticated pieces of software in existence, and since it's about the most widely-used piece of
software on the planet, it's a pretty exciting project to be working on.
I've got a once-in-a-lifetime open position on my team
that I'm currently trying to fill - a Technical Evangelist for the next Windows client release. In fact, the Technical Evangelist at this point in
time. This is an extremely challenging, high-profile senior role, with tremendous reach and influence across the organization. Not only will you be
the first to see what's coming down the pipeline, but you'll actually have an influence in setting the agenda for Windows development. This isn't
just any software gig - it's one of those career-defining roles that puts you at the heart of the software revolution. In years to come, you'll be
able to look back with pride and say, "I was part of that".

08.03.2008First Look Under Windows 7's Hood in October
Windows 7, for the most part, has remained fairly mysterious so far. Granted, we wouldn't expect anything different since it's still years ahead
from being released, but it's always good to get bits of information sprinkled here and there. The new Engineering Windows 7 (E7 for short) blog,
which was created by engineering managers Jon DeVaan and Steven Sinofsky, points out two upcoming conferences in which "in-depth technical
information about Windows 7" will be revealed. The Professional Developers Conference (PDC) on October 27 will the first of the two, and the
aforementioned duo has promised to keep a steady stream of details flowing on their blog during the run-up.

15.08.2008How Windows Vista Handles Wireless Networking
Each new version of Windows has made significant improvements in the operating system's networking capabilities. Back in the days of Windows 95 and
Windows 98, networking was a complicated affair for technical experts only; you could set up and configure a network from within Windows, but it took
a lot of work. Things got much better with Windows XP, where networking became more or less a plug-and-play operationalbeit one that required a lot of
user interaction and didn't always work as promised.
With Windows Vista, things again have changed for the better. Microsoft
completely rewrote the networking stack in Vista, which means that networking not only is more reliable, it's also much easier to set up. In fact, in
most instances you don't have to do much setup at all; Windows Vista recognizes your network and equipment, and automatically configures the system
as necessary. (At least theoretically; networking in Vista can still be counterintuitive at times, and occasionally things don't work quite as
promised.)
This is good news if you're setting up a new network for your Vista-based computersbut also useful if you're
connecting a Vista PC to an existing network or Wi-Fi hot spot.
