Changes to TCP/IP in Windows Vista

Unless you've been living under a rock, you no doubt know by now that Microsoft is currently working toward releasing the next version of the Windows operating system, Windows Vista. As you would probably expect, Windows Vista will be loaded with new features. One thing that caught me by surprise though was that Microsoft has made some major changes to the way that TCP/IP is implemented.

Next Generation TCP/IP Stack in Windows Vista

Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 1 and Windows Server "Longhorn" Beta 1 include a new implementation of the TCP/IP protocol suite known as the Next Generation TCP/IP stack. The TCP/IP protocol stack provided with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 was originally designed in the early 1990s and was modified and enhanced over time to meet the needs of home and enterprise users. The Next Generation TCP/IP stack in Windows Vista and Windows Server "Longhorn" is a complete redesign of TCP/IP functionality for both Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) that meets the connectivity and performance needs of today's varied networking environments and technologies.

Fast TCP acellerates Web

Network congestion, like vehicular traffic jams, is getting worse. No matter how fat the pipe, the antiquated Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) never fully utilizes the available bandwidth.

Developers have tried for several years to improve TCP performance and its Layer 4 counterpart, the User Datagram Protocol, using revised protocols and hardware accelerators. Members of the Internet Engineering Task Force have promoted experimental TCP alternatives. None have gained wide acceptance. Likewise, silicon vendors have devised in-line accelerators, collectively known as TCP Offload Engines, or TOEs, but the standalone TOE chip is being replaced by a TOE accelerator block that resides in an Ethernet switch or network processor.

Another solution would be to redesign TCP to take advantage of smart network routers, but that would make obsolete existing hardware and require users at both ends of a data transmission to buy new equipment.

Now http://www.fastsoft.com/>FastS oft Inc. claims to have redesigned network protocolsdubbed Fast TCPso networks make maximum use of available bandwidth with existing routers and without new equipment. ..

How to fix Vista's network bottlenecks

As much as I enjoy using Vista, I've definitely noticed that in some networking activities, it definitely seems to struggle. Particularly compared with Windows XP.

For the most part it's not a problem - I just assumed that Vista's beefy network stack was responsible, and made a mental note to fix it at some point. And then forgot.

But recently I encountered a really frustrating problem. Using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to connect from a Vista Enterprise machine to a Windows 2003 server, the performance was so woeful that I was starting to worry whether there was a problem with the server.

As it happens, my fears about the server were unfounded, but the thought that Vista's networking stack was to blame turned out to be correct. The Next Generation TCP/IP stack in Windows Vista supports something called Receive Window Auto-Tuning. This is nothing to do with the RDP "window" you see on the screen, but rather a TCP buffer which TCP/IP clients use to ensure smooth transmission.

Disable Windows Server 2003 SP2 Scalable Networking Pack features

Michael Platts: As you may know, Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 included the Scalable Networking Pack (or SNP) which allowed for increased performance in many situations by allowing some TCP functionality to be handled by the network driver and network adapter instead of the Windows TCP/IP stack itself.  This functionality was enabled by default in Service Pack 2.

There have been some problems seen in some environments where Windows Server 2003 SP2 has been deployed on systems that support the SNP features.  Issues like this have been discussed in several previously published Knowledge Base articles.

There is now a new update available that will turn off the Scalable Networking Pack features on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 systems.  The article lists a number of symptoms that have been seen when Windows Server 2003 SNP is enabled and links to download the update for x86, x64, and Itanium-based systems:

An update to turn off default SNP features is available for Windows Server 2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computers

Vista Users: Beware of the Firewall

The Internet Engineering Task Force recently held its 68th meeting in the beautiful-but-cloudy city of Prague. At that meeting, Dave Thaler, who works at Microsoft and is a member of the IETF's architecture board, the IAB, talked about what Microsoft ran into when revising the Windows TCP/IP stack for Vista. The result: Network connectivity may fail when you try to use Windows Vista behind a firewall device (Microsoft Knowledge Base article 934430).

What's this all about? There are actually two issues at play.

After XP shipped, Microsoft wanted to take the opportunity to add some new TCP features to Longhorn/Vista's IP stack. The most troublesome new feature is ECN, or Explicit Congestion Notification. ECN is specified in RFC 3168, published shortly after Windows XP's release in 2001. The idea is that when there is congestion on the network because too much traffic wants to flow through a certain connection, it would be good if the router would tell the hosts sending all this traffic that there's congestion so they can slow down a bit.

Trend Micro Warns Of Server Antivirus Flaws

Trend Micro has patched a pair of remote code execution vulnerabilities in ServerProtect, its server-based antivirus software, that could open the door for attackers to gain control over affected machines.

Both are stack-based buffer overflow bugs affecting ServerProtect For Windows version 5.58, Trend Micro said in a Tuesday advisory.

The first flaw stems from the failure of the "TmRpcSrv.dll" library to check user input before copying it to memory, Symantec said in a Deepsight Threat Management System advisory.

The bug affects the "EarthAgent.exe" daemon on TCP port 3628, and an attacker could exploit it by sending malicious code to a server with ServerProtect installed, according to Symantec.

The second vulnerability exists in the "AgRpcCln.dll" library and can be used to trigger a malicious RPC request to the "SpntSvc.exe" service, which is on TCP port 5168, Symantec said.

Microsoft study: Vista improves networking

Companies that deploy Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista in tandem could see more than a threefold increase in networking performance for file transfers, downloading roaming profiles for mobile users and accessing files on a portal, according to a Microsoft-commissioned study conducted by the Tolly Group.

In a 38-page white paper titled "Enhanced Network Performance with Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008," the Tolly Group compares the networking performance for file access on WANs and LANs using various configurations of Windows Server 2003 R2 or 2008 on the backend and XP SP2 or Vista on the frontend.

Not surprisingly, the combination of the newest operating systems brings the best gains in network performance in large part, Tolly concludes, because of an upgraded TCP/IP stack and updates to thefile-sharing Server Message Block (SMB ) protocol...

Users may need Vista to make most of Server 2008

Companies installing Windows Server 2008 may have to buy extra Microsoft software, such as Windows Vista, to use more advanced features, analyst firm Gartner has said.

John Enck, research director at Gartner, said that although making additional investments would not be a barrier to using the operating system, companies should be clear that installing Windows Server 2008 could influence their future choice of software applications.

"Combining Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in the same environment strengthens TCP/IP networking, network access protection and administering policies as well as quality of service settings. However, Windows Server also provides 'plumbing' that influences the selection of other products," he said.

Secrets of Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008, popularly known by its code name Longhorn, is a significant release for Microsoft and represents the result of a very long development cycle.

We've all heard about many features that made it into the final release. But what you may have missed is the actual impact that Longhorn's final version will have on your organization.

Some of the enhancements work pretty much as expected: restartable ActiveDirectory Domain Services (AD DS) and several integrity-related NTFS enhancements are two examples. Other Longhorn changes can take quite a bit of planning to deliver what you'd want, plus may require you to buy new hardware to take advantage of them: Server Core, RODCs (read-only domain controllers), failover clustering, multi-path I/O, and Next Generation TCP/IP.

New attack proves critical Windows bug 'highly exploitable'

Security researchers yesterday said they'd discredited Microsoft's claim that the year's first critical Windows vulnerability would be "difficult and unlikely" to be exploited by attackers.

On Tuesday, Immunity Inc. updated a working exploit for the TCP/IP flaw spelled out Jan. 8 in Microsoft's MS08-001 security bulletin, and posted a Flash demonstration of the attack on its Web site. The exploit, which was released to customers of its CANVAS penetration testing software -- but is not available to the public -- was a revised version of code first issued two weeks ago.

"This demonstrates conclusively that the MS08-001 IGMPv3 vulnerability is highly exploitable," said Dave Aitel, Immunity's chief technology officer, in a message to his Dailydave security mailing list.
