Transmission Control Protocol
(TCP) never fully utilizes the
available bandwidth.
Developers have tried for
several years to improve TCP
performance and its Layer 4
counterpart, the User Datagram
Protocol, using revised
protocols and hardware

experimental TCP alternatives.
None have gained wide

02.06.2008How to fix Vista's network bottlenecks
As much as I enjoy using Vista, I've definitely noticed that in some networking activities, it definitely seems to struggle. Particularly compared
with Windows XP.
For the most part it's not a problem - I just assumed that Vista's beefy network stack was responsible, and made a
mental note to fix it at some point. And then forgot.
But recently I encountered a really frustrating problem. Using Remote Desktop
Protocol (RDP) to connect from a Vista Enterprise machine to a Windows 2003 server, the performance was so woeful that I was starting to worry whether
there was a problem with the server.
As it happens, my fears about the server were unfounded, but the thought that Vista's networking
stack was to blame turned out to be correct. The Next Generation TCP/IP stack in Windows Vista supports something called Receive Window Auto-Tuning.
This is nothing to do with the RDP "window" you see on the screen, but rather a TCP buffer which TCP/IP clients use to ensure smooth
transmission.

15.02.2006Disable Windows Server 2003 SP2 Scalable Networking Pack features
Michael Platts: As you may know, Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 included the
Scalable Networking Pack (or SNP) which allowed for increased performance in many situations by allowing some TCP functionality
to be handled by the network driver and network adapter instead of the Windows TCP/IP stack itself. This functionality was enabled by default in
Service Pack 2.
There have been some problems seen in some environments where Windows Server 2003 SP2 has been deployed on
systems that support the SNP features. Issues like this have been discussed in several previously published Knowledge Base articles.
There is now a new update available that will turn off the Scalable Networking Pack features on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2
systems. The article lists a number of symptoms that have been seen when Windows Server 2003 SNP is enabled and links to download the update for
x86, x64, and Itanium-based systems:

The Internet Engineering Task
Force recently held its 68th
meeting in the
beautiful-but-cloudy city of
Prague. At that meeting, Dave
Thaler, who works at Microsoft
and is a member of the IETF's
architecture board, the IAB,
talked about what Microsoft
ran into when revising the
Windows TCP/IP stack for
Vista. The result: Network
connectivity may fail when you
try to use Windows Vista
behind a firewall device
(Microsoft Knowledge Base
article 934430).
What's this all
about? There are actually two
issues at play.
After XP shipped,
Microsoft wanted to take the
opportunity to add some new
TCP features to
Longhorn/Vista's IP stack.
The most troublesome new
feature is ECN, or Explicit
Congestion Notification. ECN
is specified in RFC 3168,
published shortly after
Windows XP's release in 2001.
The idea is that when there is
congestion on the network
because too much traffic wants
to flow through a certain
connection, it would be good
if the router would tell the
hosts sending all this traffic
that there's congestion so
they can slow down a bit.

Trend Micro has patched a pair
of remote code execution
vulnerabilities in
ServerProtect, its
server-based antivirus
software, that could open the
door for attackers to gain
control over affected
machines.
Both are
stack-based buffer overflow
bugs affecting ServerProtect
For Windows version 5.58,
Trend Micro said in a Tuesday
advisory.
The first
flaw stems from the failure of
the "TmRpcSrv.dll" library
to check user input before
copying it to memory, Symantec
said in a Deepsight Threat
Management System advisory.
The bug affects the
"EarthAgent.exe" daemon on
TCP port 3628, and an attacker
could exploit it by sending
malicious code to a server
with ServerProtect installed,
according to Symantec.
The second
vulnerability exists in the
"AgRpcCln.dll" library and
can be used to trigger a
malicious RPC request to the
"SpntSvc.exe" service, which
is on TCP port 5168, Symantec
said.

Security researchers yesterday said they'd discredited Microsoft's claim that the year's first critical Windows vulnerability would be "difficult
and unlikely" to be exploited by attackers.
On Tuesday, Immunity Inc. updated a working exploit for the TCP/IP flaw spelled out
Jan. 8 in Microsoft's MS08-001 security bulletin, and posted a
Flash
demonstration of the attack on its Web site. The exploit, which was released to customers of its CANVAS penetration testing software -- but is not
available to the public -- was a revised version of code
first issued two weeks
ago.
"This demonstrates conclusively that the MS08-001 IGMPv3 vulnerability is highly exploitable," said Dave Aitel,
Immunity's chief technology officer, in a message to his Dailydave security mailing list.
