11.11.2008China's Olympic ticketing system crashes on first day
The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games watched unhappily as their online ticketing system for the games crashed shortly after tickets
went on sale to the general public. BOCOGs ticketing site received 8 million page views during the first hour of ticket sales on October 30, with an
average of 200,000 ticket requests hitting the system every minute. In addition, more than 3.8 million telephone calls flooded the sales hotline as
fans tried to book tickets for the games. " Because of the overwhelming volume of page visits, the technical system was unable to perform the
tasks well enough, and many applicants were unable to successfully submit their applications ," said BOCOG.
After two hours of
operating, only 9,000 tickets had been sold and eventually the ticketing system was taken offline for several hours in the afternoon. After IT staff
reconfigured the system, it was brought back online at 5 p.m, only to be finally taken offline at 6 p.m., by which a total of 43,000 tickets had been
sold (90% of which had been sold online). At a press conference Wednesday, BOCOG officials said the ticketing system had been designed to handle a
mere 1 million visits per hour and 150,000 ticket requests per minute. The ticketing system simply could not cope, they said, promising to announce a
revamped ticketing plan November 5.

07.04.2009Microsoft To Extend Windows XP Deadline For OEMs
Long live XP!
Microsoft will announce later today that it will give OEMs six additional months to sell PCs with Windows XP
installed, CRN has learned.
Microsoft is extending the deadline for sales of new direct OEM PCs with Windows XP installed from
January 31, 2008 to June 30, 2008, according to sources close to the company.
"The named accounts, the ones that have volume,
have complained about the end of life for XP, and that's because adoption of Windows Vista has been slow," said one Microsoft partner who requested
anonymity. "This is a pretty important development for larger partners, and it's also somewhat surprising because it shows that they've been
listening to us."
The move comes as little surprise to VARs and system builders who have been ripping Windows Vista off the
desktops and notebooks they sell and replacing it with Windows XP ever since the next generation operating system debuted in January.
"We don't really do anything with Vista right now, the requests are few and far between," said Douglas Lee, CFO and director of business
development at BostonTech Partners, a Canton, Mass., solution provider.
Microsoft, for its part, claims demand is strong for
Vista and its momentum is unprecedented. However, the fact that Microsoft has been working on a third service pack for Windows XP, currently slated
for release in the first half of 2008, is a reflection of the still-strong demand for the OS, according to system builders.
"The
problem is that XP is too good of a product," said one Microsoft system builder partner who requested anonymity. "XP has become so embedded in
peoples' environments, it's extremely difficult to get them to switch to Vista."

23.04.2009Windows DNS bug fix can impair firewalls, including ZoneAlarm
BetaNews has confirmed through its own testing this morning that a critical patch, released yesterday by Microsoft as part of a worldwide DNS bug fix
effort, can and does impact the functionality of software firewalls.
Multiple reports from users since yesterday afternoon have
complained of systems incapable of contacting the Internet after having implemented patch KB951748. This patch makes a major change to the way the
operating system handles DNS requests. Specifically, it implements a system that enables source port randomization -- a way to scramble the
address from which a request is placed -- as a security measure to thwart malicious users from being able to craft false DNS responses, and thus
"poison" the caches of DNS servers.

17.11.200525% of Microsoft virtualized [on Hyper-V] in production

09.07.2008Microsoft cites human error in anti-piracy malfunction
Last week's malfunction of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy mechanism was caused when new software code was accidentally put on the
servers running the system, before those servers had been made ready for the code, according to
a post last night by Alex Kochis, WGA senior product
manager. Kochis writes:
"Nothing more than human error started it all. Pre-production code was sent to production servers. The production servers
had not yet been upgraded with a recent change to enable stronger encryption/decryption of product keys during the activation and validation
processes. The result of this is that the production servers declined activation and validation requests that should have passed."
Kochis
explains in the post that the problem made some computers fail the anti-piracy validation and activation processes, causing them to lose advanced
Windows features and get a "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message, until the WGA system was fixed and people were able to properly activate
and validate their computers.
