With the help of the Taskbar, it becomes easier to see what are the programs currently running, switching between applications and also to access your favorites using the Quick Launch. Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 2

In the first part of this series, we had a brief look into the history of the dock and Windows 7 superbar. Today, we will go through some of the basic functionalities that both dock and superbar provide and have in common. The dock can hold any number of items and resize them dynamically to fit while using magnification to clarify smaller resized items. Applications that do not normally keep icons in the dock will still appear when running and remain until they are quit. Running items are distinguished by an indicator at the bottom of their respective icons. When you quit an application whose icon resides in the dock, the indicator disappears.

Wishing that the new "Superbar" was available for the PDC build of Windows 7? What about for your trusty copy of Vista? Well it isn't available for Vista yet (I am sure someone will whip up someway of porting it over) but it is available to all users who have a copy of Windows 7 Build 6801.

Rafael, the well known Ux theme patcher, from withinwindows.com, has uncovered how to bring this breakthrough feature available to anyone who is lucky enough to have Windows 7 build 6801. It does take some changing to the OS to enable this hidden feature but it is well worth it.

Windows 7 Build 6801 has the Superbar, too

Microsoft deceived every PDC2008 attendee by saying that the build they handed out, build 6801, didn't have the new "superbar" taskbar replacement that was being shown off throughout the conference.

Well, it turns out that it really is in the build, you just have to be properly authenticated in Redmond. Rafael (withinwindows.com) has decrypted this mystery and has provided a patch (with instructions) that will enable the superbar on any 6801 install.

Rafael's at it Again

As a lot of people are aware, Rafael from Within Windows has been finding and exposing un-released Windows 7 features, most notably the "Superbar" and Desktop Slideshows.

He has now created a full unlocking tool called "Blue Badge" that will unlock the following features:

- The Superbar
- Gestures and Panning (for use on touch screens)
- Desktop Slideshows

A couple of days ago Anthony Cook of blogofcookie.com noticed some interesting screenshots from a presentation at the Microsoft France training event "TechDays 09" of what appeared to be a different user-interface for Windows 7. However contrary to his speculation that this was to be the speculated theme refresh under wraps for Windows 7, it is in fact a screenshot of an old "superbar" prototype...

Windows 7 RTM contains a rather nasty chkdsk bug

Windows 7 RTM, which will be distributed to MSDN/TechNet and technical beta testers tomorrow, contains a nasty memory leak when the chkdsk command is initiated. The bug occurs when the CHKDSK /R command is initiated on a non-system volume. Memory usage of the chkdsk.exe process soars until the system is using over 90% physical memory. In some cases this will cause the system to become unresponsive and unstable. Some are calling the bug a "show stopper", whilst others (Randall Kennedy) claim it could derail the Windows 7 launch. It's worth noting that Kennedy claimed in November 2008 that Microsoft had delayed the Windows 7 beta to early 2009, even though company officials always stated this was the case.

The New Taskbar in Windows 7

As we have noticed with the Windows 7 presentation at D6, Microsoft is putting in some efforts to make an update to the aging design of the taskbar, contrary to the belief that they are going to make something completely new. The supposedly new name of the taskbar is the "Superbar." Long Zheng has pointed out some of the new things:

"The first being the taskbar is higher than usual, but not as big as double-height. If I were to guess, I'd say its somewhere around 1.75x-high. In the left corner, the Windows orb remains wedged "on top" of the taskbar - sticking its head out a little - instead of in the center like it is today in Vista.

The taskbar also appears 'divided' into sections by variations in the color (dark, gray, lighter) to indicate the different areas. Speaking of which, if you look at the far right corner, you'd notice that the tray (icons & clock) is not touching the edge of the screen, and there's a small lighter gap. I have no explanation for this, but is well worth keeping an eye on."

iPhone password revealing bug

A user on Twitter has posted a message about a potentially nasty bug found on the iPhone and iPod touch firmware. This user, rpetrich, discovered the exploit, which can reveal users passwords on the devices, according to ModMyi.com. The bug only works in certain scenarios and doesn't pose a risk to users everywhere, unless somebody within arm reach gets a hold of your iPhone or iPod touch. The bug can be exploited in almost every available application that stores passwords; this includes your saved email account passwords. The bug can reveal all characters, except the very first character in the password field.

Enthusiast Chris Holmes claims that many users have started experiencing random crashing of explorer and msiexec.exe when trying to start Windows Update or install anything that uses an MSI based installer. Some have gone to the extent of reinstalling the beta. Rafael has discovered that the fault arises from the Software Quality Management (SQM) Client which is a part of the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP).

No fix for data corruption bug in Windows Home Server

Two months after acknowledging a serious data corruption bug exists in Windows Home Server, Microsoft has admitted it still has no fix. The latest update to its knowledgebase entry essentially says, "still workin' on it". The bug relates to a little known, but frequently used, method of writing hidden data to NTFS file systems, which is incompatible with the disk pooling strategy used in Home Server.

The software giant first acknowledged the problem on December 21 last year, providing a list of programs that could cause data on a Windows Home Server to become corrupted, including Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, OneNote 2007, OneNote 2003, Outlook 2007, Money 2007, SyncToy 2.0 beta, QuickBooks and uTorrent.
