Windows DreamScene coming soon on Ultimate

Windows Vista Ultimate users began to receive the first set of "Ultimate Extras". But arguably the most anticipated Ultimate Extra was not there -- Windows DreamScene.

Windows client director, Jeff Putt has confirmed that this extra will not be available in its final form immediately after launch. However, a technology preview may be coming soon for Windows Vista Ultimate users who want to give it a try.

Windows DreamScene enables users to use looping high-definition video content (MPEG, WMV) as an animated wallpaper. Thanks to the new 3D accelerated desktop in Windows Vista, the animated wallpaper uses virtually no CPU (just a little for decoding the video).

Microsoft demonstrated Windows DreamScene yesterday at the launch event which showed Windows DreamScene using an animated wallpaper created by Stardock . The wallpaper they showed will be available exclusively at Neowin.net's partner site, WinCustomize .com, in February.

More information on public availability for Windows Vista Ultimate users is expected soon.

Ajax Startup Launches Web Desktop Linked To Gmail

Net entrepreneur Michael Robertson, founder of MP3.com and Linspire, is on a crusade to change the software industry again. This time, he's putting his energy and expertise behind a new startup that uses Ajax as a middleware platform to create a niche in the software as a service (SaaS) marketplace.

The company is Ajax13, the product is ajaxWindows, and the concept is pretty straightforward: The software platform is operating system-agnostic and based on the XML User Interface Language (XUL) to act as a Web-based desktop. Files can be moved around and opened, and applications launch with a mouse click. The interface also includes customizable wallpaper, start-up and shut down sounds, and browser bookmarks. But instead of interacting with the hardware, the user stores all desktop data, documents, and content, free of charge into a Gmail account.

"The concept here is that we didn't want to determine where our registered users keep their files," Robertson told InformationWeek. "We are launching the Gmail interface but we will let people have a choice going forward." Options include other online sites or a local storage device such as a USB thumb drive, Robertson said. ..

Vista Startup Sounds Impossible to turn off

Apparently, Windows Vista's startup sounds, recorded by Robert Fripp, are very liked by Microsoft executives, so much that they are thinking about removing the ability for the end user to remove them or customize them as he wishes.

According to Steve Ball, the group program manager for the Windows Audio Video Excellence team, Windows Vista will offer a "common, and beautiful, face to the world.". He says Microsoft worked hard on those sounds and on its corporate image and that he thinks they will be liked by a majority of users.

Windows Server 2008: Terminal Services Architecture

Day Fourteen - we are past the halfway point. A good portion of the next two weeks will be devoted to Terminal Services and the new TS features. So strap in, and let's get started ...

We talked about the Windows Server 2008 Startup Processes in an earlier post. SMSS.EXE is still the first user-mode process created during the boot process as in previous versions of Windows. The change is that now SMSS.EXE launches a second instance of itself to configure Session 0, which is dedicated to system processes. The instance of SMSS.EXE dedicated to Session 0 launches the Windows Startup Application (WININIT.EXE) as well as an instance of CSRSS.EXE for Session 0, after which it exits. WININIT.EXE continues the startup process by starting SERVICES.EXE and LSASS.EXE as well as a new process, the Local Session Manager (LSM.EXE) which manages Terminal Server connections for the machine.

Trend Micro OS Protection beta released

Trend Micro today released http://www.trendsecure.com/por tal/en-US/threat_analytics/os_ protect.php?WT.cg_n=home_2nd_r ight>Trend Micro OS Protection beta for its Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 customers. OS protection includes Trend Micro Firewall Booster and Trend Micro Pre-Startup Scan.

Rather than rail against various kernel changes within Windows Vista as Symantec and other did last fall, Trend Micro says it wanted to work in cooperation with Microsoft. Trend Micro OS Protection works on both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista.

The chief benefit from Trend Micro Firewall Booster is Windows Vista users won't have dual firewall technologies running. Firewall Booster leverages existing Windows Vista Firewall capabilities, adding protection provided by Trend Micro. Trend Micro Pre-Startup Scan runs before Windows Vista boots, ferreting out sleeping malware such as rootkits before engaging the operating system. Pre-Startup includes a system restore checkpoint, so that a user can always roll back any changes made. The process is not automatic, allowing the user to decide when and how the scans will be done. ..

DeskScapes 2.0 Preview Available

Stardock is pleased to announce that the DeskScapes 2.0 preview version is now available. DeskScapes allows users of Windows Vista to have animated wallpapers on their desktop. It runs the Stardock created .DREAM format which can contain videos as animated wallpapers or dynamically generated content.

What makes DeskScapes special is that animated wallpapers can be run that use hardly any system resources (obviously this will depend on what animated wallpaper is chosen). It integrates seamlessly with the Windows Vista desktop background dialog so picking animated wallpapers is much the same as picking any other desktop wallpaper.
