Windows 7 Starter Edition details confirmed

As was reported here on Neowin, there was speculation that Microsoft were planning to remove the application limit on Windows 7 Starter Edition. According to The Windows Blog, Microsoft have confirmed that the "3 applications at a time" limit that hobbled earlier versions of the Starter Edition has been removed for Windows 7. Now the only effective limit on the number of programs you can run concurrently is set by the amount of your memory. Windows 7 Starter Edition will have other limits, however, in order to differentiate it from other versions of the OS. "Windows 7 Starter does not include: * Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the "Windows Basic" or other opaque themes.

Lets talk about Windows 7 Starter

Brandon LeBlanc: For the first time, we will be making Windows 7 Starter available worldwide on small notebook PCs. We are also going to enable Windows 7 Starter customers the ability to run as many applications simultaneously as they would like, instead of being constricted to the 3 application limit that the previous Starter editions included.

We believe these changes will make Windows 7 Starter an even more attractive option for customers who want a small notebook PC for very basic tasks, like browsing the web, checking email and personal productivity.

Microsoft may adjust limitations on Windows 7 Starter

According to Paul Thurrott, Microsoft will be lifting the three running application limit for Windows 7 Starter Edition. Previously with XP and Vista, Starter Edition was designed to run on low end equipment and be sold in what Microsoft called "developing markets." But for Windows 7, Microsoft moved Starter Edition into the rest of the world and decided to sell Home Basic in the developing markets instead. Starter Edition is expected to be sold on netbook class systems, so even if there isn't a software coded limit to how many applications you can run at one time, the limited amount of processor and memory resources in the computer will continue to be the deciding factor.

Windows 7 Starter editions odd "three app limit" behavior

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: I've spoken before about how Windows 7 Starter edition's built-in artificial "three app limit" where users can only run a maximum of three applications at any one time could be a pain for those looking for cheap netbooks (and could mean that they end up paying for an upgrade). Microsoft confirms no Windows 7 restrictions on netbooks

Microsoft announced that they have removed the netbook restrictions that previously prevented users from installing any version of Windows 7 on their netbook. The lifted restriction means users can install Windows 7 starter on a netbook, and that the three application restriction has been removed as per consumer's request. "OEMs and ODMs have the choice to install any version of Windows on a netbook," a Microsoft UK spokesperson said. " Starter is an entry version and doesn't have many of the consumer or business features. The three application limit isn't there anymore." Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic variety only come in 32bit versions and are missing a variation of features from the higher end versions.

Microsoft Takes XP Starter Edition To Egypt, Turkey

Microsoft added two new versions of its bare-bones Windows XP Starter Edition Tuesday, one in Arabic for the Egyptian market, the other targeted at Turkey.

St arter Edition is a pared-down operating system that Microsoft introduced last year aimed at countries where piracy is rampant and incomes are low. Counting the new editions released Tuesday, Starter Edition is now available in nine languages and 32 countries.

The Arabic and Turkish versions will be distributed in partnership with the governments of Egypt and Turkey, respectively. "Building on our joint success in the Affordable PC Initiative 'PC for Every Home' that has delivered more than a quarter of a million PCs to Egyptian homes, we anticipate the new Windows XP Starter Edition will provide wider and more affordable technology access to the masses," said Dr. Tare Kamel, minister of communications for the Arab Republic of Egypt, in a statement.

Microsof t did not disclose specific pricing information for the two versions. ..

Spyware Doctor Starter Edition has SMALLER Signature D/B.

According to discussions in This PC Tools Forum Thread, the Spyware Doctor Starter Edition, which is available as a Freeware Download as a part of the Google Pack, has a MUCH Smaller Database. Even during updates it is allowed to download FEWER updates than its subscribed versions.

Most users of the Starter Edition are of the impression that the only limitation in the Starter Edition was that some of the On-Guard facilities were not available. So, what exactly has been left out, other than the obvious 400K fewer malware signatures in the Starter Editions !? Its a question which may worry users of the Starter Edition.

If this is indeed the case, then PC Tools should have made it clear on its page, here, that apart from the absence of real-time active monitors, the Starter Editions Malware database is also limited, and consequently it does not detect or clean 100% of malware !

Microsoft gambles that "Starter" edition dissatisfaction will boost revenues

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: The sudden popularity of netbooks caught Microsoft off-guard. Vistas bloated system requirements forced the company to dust off Windows XP and offer that older, cheaper OS to OEMs looking to a Windows-based netbook solution. Microsoft is now gambling that making a cut-down, crippled Starter edition Windows 7 for low-cost systems, combined with an easy (but paid for) Anytime Upgrade will help boost flagging revenues. Personally, I think that its a gamble - a dangerous gamble...

OLPC project clarifies: no plans for Windows support

Claims that the One Laptop Per Child project and Microsoft had partnered to put Windows XP Starter Edition on the laptop have turned out to be false. According to Walter Bender, president of Software and Content at OLPC, there is no agreement in place between OLPC and Microsoft to offer XO laptops with any version of Windows. Bender also indicated that Microsoft has not contacted OLPC regarding its $3 software bundling program, nor have any governments requested that the XO be outfitted with Windows.

Microsoft may be one of over 1,500 developers accepted to OLPC's developer program, the company does have access to XO prototypes and has said that it will develop for the XO laptop. However, when asked if OLPC was aware of any tests of either XP Starter Edition or Vista Starter Edition on the XO, Bender said that he was not.

Microsoft tells OEMs what netbooks are

Microsoft is going to restrict original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to certain hardware specifications for their netbooks if they want to run Windows 7 Starter - the edition of the new operating system designed for netbooks - Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has confirmed.
