05.03.2009London to have satellites that monitor your speed
In a trial that can only be described as Big Brotherly, London is going is going to start trials of attempting to stop speeders from space. The
basic idea works around that the vehicles are equipped with information about speed limits for public roads. A satellite will monitor the speed of
the car vs. the pre-installed data to determine if the car is speeding. If the car is found to be speeding then one of two things can happen. The car
can either be slowed down by the satellite (voluntary mode) or the car can alert you that you need to slow down but won't actually adjust the
vehicles speed (advisory mode).

06.02.2008Windows Vista 64-bit Today
Chris Flores: There appears to be a shift taking place in the PC industry: the move from 32-bit to 64-bit PCs.
We've been
tracking the change by looking at the percentage of 64-bit PCs connecting to Windows Update, and have seen a dramatic increase in recent months. The
installed base of 64-bit Windows Vista PCs, as a percentage of all Windows Vista systems, has more than tripled in the U.S. in the last three months,
while worldwide adoption has more than doubled during the same period. Another view shows that 20% of new Windows Vista PCs in the U.S. connecting to
Windows Update in June were 64-bit PCs, up from just 3% in March. Put more simply, usage of 64-bit Windows Vista is growing much more rapidly than
32-bit. Based on current trends, this growth will accelerate as the retail channel shifts to supplying a rapidly increasing assortment of 64-bit
desktops and laptops.

28.04.2008Install Windows Vista from a high speed USB 2.0 Flash Drive
Why would someone want to
install a client OS from a
thumb drive instead of a
DVDROM or over the network?
One reason: Performance.
Installing Windows
Vista from a high speed USB
flash drive is in my
experience the easiest &
fastest way to complete a
Windows Vista install. This is
much faster than using a DVD,
gigabit ethernet, or possibly
even some external USB 2.0
hard drives, due to
differences in access speed &
transfer rate. To put this
into perspective, y'know how
installing Windows on a
Virtual PC virtual machine

really, really, really fast?

roughly just as fast, except
for doing installations of the
OS on to actual

- Using hardware to boost the actual physical speed of a computer.
- Making configuration changes that help a computer to start

29.07.2008Samsung and Microsoft work to speed up SSDs
A few weeks ago SanDisk slated Windows Vista for not being optimized for SSD (Solid State Drive) storage hardware.
"As soon as you
get into Vista applications in notebook and desktop, you start running into very demanding applications because Vista is not optimized for flash
memory solid-state disk”. Said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Eli Harari
SandDisk’s solution is to develop a new
controller technology which will overcome these limitations but could take upto a year to reach the market.
Now according to
PCworld Samsung has been in talks with Microsoft to increase the performance of SSDs using Vista
and other MS OSes.
The speed and way in which SSDs fetch and cache data are different than hard drives, said Michael Wang, flash marketing
manager at Sun.
Standard magnetic hard drives have a 512kb cluster size where as SSDs only have a 4kb cluster size. Samsung hopes to work
with Microsoft to boost SSD performance on Windows by discovering optimal packet sizes for data transfers and the best ways to read and write files,
for example.
SSDs have been hailed as the future storage medium for PC’s and internet connected devices, citing speed, power use and
durability.

20.11.2006Is 64-bit Vista ready for take off?
For many moons, I've been raising the issue of how people get to 64-bit Windows 7, which is a big compatibility shift from 32-bit Windows XP. The
obvious answer is via Vista, but is that 32-bit Vista and/or 64-bit Vista? The price includes both, so it's up to you.
Initially, Vista
was a bit short of drivers, or else had some bad drivers. That made 32-bit Vista the obvious choice for most people, because 64-bit drivers were even
rarer. The same thing applied to software compatibility, only more so, because while it does run 32-bit programs, 64-bit Vista is much less forgiving
about rubbish programming.
Now it looks as though the dramatic improvements in Vista drivers etc could be feeding through into the 64-bit
version (possibly with a bit of help from the Windows Server market, which is now almost all 64-bit). Anyway, according to Chris Flores on the
Vista team's
blog.
