Feature Comparison: XP SP3 Professional vs. Vista SP1

Call it a sign of desperation, a new attempt to blow some wind in the sails of its latest platform, or a reaction to the proverbial last drop, but Microsoft is delivering its own perspective in terms of the comparison between its two Windows clients sharing the vast majority of the operating system market. Just ahead of the availability cut-off date for Windows XP through the OEM and retail channels, the Redmond company has “come out gunning” in a move designed to settle once and for good the XP vs. Vista face-off.

Linux Comparison: openSUSE

Previous to writing this comparison, I have only ever used Ubuntu and Fedora. Considering Ubuntu's popularity and reputation for being easy to use, I was expecting openSUSE to be nowhere near as good. From the moment I was greeted with "Welcome" as the LiveCD booted, I knew I was going to be proven wrong. View: Part 1 of "Linux Comparison" - Ubuntu An install for all. The installation was quick and painless. The installer correctly detected the existing Linux partitions, and also proposed that I did not format my home partition (for the uninitiated, this is more or less the "My Documents" of Linux).

Browser Speed Tests: The Compiled, Up-to-Date Results

Back when Firefox 3's final release candidate dropped, we ran some tests to compare its page-loading, memory use, and technical timing to Internet Explorer 7, Opera, and Safari for Windows. The tests were by and large the same, but many commenters wisely asked to see all the results, betas or no betas. Well, today we've patched together all our data, thrown in a fresh test of the Opera 9.6 beta, and we're sharing all the graphy goodness. Microsoft Kills Windows Validation and Office Validation Anti-Piracy Efforts

Microsoft's anti-piracy efforts will undertake a major overhauling. The Redmond company plans to take down both the Windows Validation Assistant and the Office Validation Assistant.

However, Microsoft is going to fill in the empty spaces left by the discontinuing of WVA and OVA with Windows Comparison Guide (WCG) and the Office Comparison Guide (OCG). Additionally there is also the old trust Windows Genuine Advantage and Office Genuine Advantage that will survive the anti-piracy cancelled services. Still, this is not the end of the upgrades in stored for the Microsoft anti-piracy programs. Feature updates and additions are also planned to be introduced.

"We're finally taking down both the Windows Validation Assistant and the Office Validation Assistant. The WVA was a prototype for WGA; it was the first tool launched that offered a web-based validation that could help find evidence that a copy wasn't genuine that otherwise might be hard for the average person to find (such as bad or leaked product keys, etc.) The good news is that we're replacing the WVA with the Windows Comparison Guide (WCG) and the Office Comparison Guide (OCG). These guides offer much of the same functionality as the WVA did by walking users through a quiz that helps them match the anti-piracy features of the products they have, but without the web-based validation. For that we're pointing people directly to WGA," revealed Alex Kochis, a senior licensing manager on the WGA team. ..

Web browsers get a 12% speed boost in Windows 7 over Vista

If you've been testing the final Windows 7 Release Candidate on your own physical platforms, and you wonder what's giving you that feeling that it's just a bit peppier, a tad zippier, it's not an illusion. Do you know how to deploy?

James Senior: Who actually uses a DVD to deploy? Do you build PC's and sell them? Are you frustrated? Frustrated by the speed of your deployments? Do you find yourself waiting, brewing tea waiting, wondering if... if there is a better way, a better way to deploy the one thing that holds you back. Yes, I'm talking about your Operating System. I don't mean to be rude, but the number of people who put their hands up at roadshows when we ask the question, "who installs their OS using DVD" is quite frankly worrying...no disturbing. Let me put it in perspective.

If you are installing your OS, beit Windows Vista (preferably) or Windows XP by DVD then in effect you might as well install it using floppy disks.

Although technically not a fair comparison the analogy holds true.

What then is the alternative?

Linux Comparison: Fedora and conclusion

Fedora My first experience of Fedora came with Fedora 7, not long after I first used Ubuntu. I had difficulties getting it set up correctly, especially when it came to downloading new applications, but once it was running the way I liked, I much preferred it to Ubuntu. My first impressions of Fedora 10 are good, but there are some clear issues that need addressing, especially when it is put up against Ubuntu and openSUSE. Installation a mixed experience. At first I didn't think I was going to be able to review Fedora. The LiveCD loaded to 100 percent within a few minutes, then sat there, apparently doing nothing.

London to have satellites that monitor your speed

In a trial that can only be described as Big Brotherly, London is going is going to start trials of attempting to stop speeders from space. The basic idea works around that the vehicles are equipped with information about speed limits for public roads. A satellite will monitor the speed of the car vs. the pre-installed data to determine if the car is speeding. If the car is found to be speeding then one of two things can happen. The car can either be slowed down by the satellite (voluntary mode) or the car can alert you that you need to slow down but won't actually adjust the vehicles speed (advisory mode).

Mainstream Quad-Core CPU Performance Comparison

Looking back, quad-core processors have had quite the run already. Intel's first quad-core CPU, the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 was released almost three years ago, with the much more popular Q6600 following up months later at a rather steep $850. As you may recall it was quite the luxury then to have one of these at your disposal. Today we find ourselves with very different and diversified offerings from both companies, that are not only cheaper but also significantly faster.

AMD and Intel Compare Future Processors in SPEC

Performance of current central processing units may impress, but nothing impresses more than the speed of the forthcoming products. Both Advanced Micro Devices and Intel Corp. have released SPECfp_rate2006 and SPECint_rate2006 test results of their unreleased processors recently on their web-sites to impress the public.

If SPEC benchmark results published by AMD and Intel are to be believed, then a system with two Intel Xeon quad-core microprocessors based on the new micro-architecture at 3.20GHz clock-speed will offer much higher floating point performance than currently available dual-processor server machines. While the results of a 2P machine featuring a pair of quad-core AMD Opteron at 2.50GHz reveal potential, its performance is much slower compared to a 2P Intel Xeon 5400-series-based machine (with 3.20GHz CPU clock speed and 1.60GHz processor system bus speed) in the crucial SPECfp_2006, according to Intel (see slide 18 of this presentation).

At present, quad-core AMD Opteron processor does not have any advantage over quad-core Intel Xeon processor when it comes to integer computations at the same clock-speed. Nevertheless, the new micro-architecture of AMDs quad-core chips allows the central processing units (CPUs) to outperform Intel quad-core Xeon central processing units by 26% when it comes to floating point computations. However, performance comparison between the forthcoming chips may become much different.
