18.5.2009Keith Combs: Windows Vista SP1 coming sooner than you think
Keith Combs, Microsoft IT Pro Evangelist: It goes without saying that there has been a considerable amount of feedback around our release schedule for
Windows Vista SP1. Don't think for a second that because I'm silent about such issues on my blog, that I am not working our internal communication
channels to be your advocate.
Being an advocate means I get an opportunity to assess the situation with my "customer base",
which is now world wide, and offer my opinion on what we should or should not do. I've done that in the past and will do it in the future. It
doesn't mean I'll get what I want, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
<...> The good news is that there are some changes coming to
the release schedule I think you will like. Keep an eye on the Windows Vista Product Group Blog @
http://windowsvistablog.com/ for the update. It should be coming pretty soon.

- All upgrades will require user interaction.
-
This service pack package will supersede WSUS 3.0 RTM packages.
- Block upgrades of all WSUS installation using remote SQL. This is now
a manual upgrade process.
- Do not support upgrading previous versions of WSUS running on Windows 2008.
- System Center
Essentials 1.0 RTM will not be upgraded to WSUS 3.0 SP1. This will be handled by a future release of System Center Essentials.
Note:
WSUS 2.0 SP1 and WSUS 2.0 Client SelfUpdate Update for WSUS 2.0 SP1 packages will be expired. These updates are still available on the Download

20.03.2008Windows Vista SP1 Prerequisite Releases Coming Up
Microsoft Update Team: This week we're releasing two more prerequisites for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 that will be coming later this quarter. We
wanted to let you know about them because they are both marked as Important updates (and theyre a little different than usual).
KB938371 is a multi-component update that supports the successful install of SP1 and allows it to be uninstalled. KB937287 updates the Windows
Vista Servicing Stack. Both updates (required before SP1 will be offered via Windows Update) are being made available now to reduce the number of
reboots and make installation of the service pack easier.
Even if you're not ready to install the service pack once it's
released, you'll want to install these updates because they'll help increase performance and reduce failures for the installation of other
updates.

12.02.2008Rumor: Vista SP1 coming February 18, XP SP3 on March 23
French tech website
PC INpact is reporting that
it got its grubby little hands on the exact release dates of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 as well as Windows XP Service Pack 3. According to a source,
Vista SP1 is to be released on the night of February 18 while XP SP3 will be released on the night of March 23.
Although Microsoft has not
given a tight timeframe for when to expect XP SP3, it did state earlier that Vista SP1 will be available in mid-March. The screenshots should be
therefore taken with a grain of salt. It is possible that these memos were sent out before Microsoft delayed Vista to mid-March. Could it be that the
Vista date is wrong but the XP one is correct?

07.02.2008Why SP1 was offered to some via Windows Update yesterday
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Yesterday some people got a surprise - Windows Vista SP1 coming down the Windows Update pipes. Turns out someone at Microsoft
flipped the wrong switch.
Here the information that I have thanks to a Microsoft spokesperson:
Were very pleased
with the progress weve made with Windows Vista to date. Since releasing SP1 to manufacturing on February 4th, we have made Windows Vista SP1 available
to beta testers, MSDN and TechNet Plus subscribers, as well as Volume Licensing customers. Today, a build of SP1 was posted to Windows Update and it
was inadvertently made available to a broad group. The build was intended only for our more technically advanced testers, and was meant to only be
offered to those with a specific registry key set on their PC. For general availability, we are still planning to make SP1 broadly available in the
mid-March timeframe.

When you try to install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update you can get error: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from

To help ensure a positive update experience, Windows Update will temporarily not
offer Windows Vista SP1 to systems that have the following device drivers. In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based
computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer
Windows Vista SP1.

22.02.2008SIGGRAPH: DirectX 10.1 in Windows Vista SP1 "Coming Soon"
Microsoft offered official
confirmation that DirectX 10.1
in Windows Vista SP1 can be
expected in the immediate
future. The SIGGRAPH 2007
conference is the stage where
Microsoft is presenting an
introduction to Direct3D 10,
but also the future of this
application programming
interface.
Direct3D 10 is an integer
part of the DirectX 10 API
available exclusively through
Microsoft's latest operating
system Windows Vista, in
combination with the
underlying graphics hardware.
The Redmond company has
repeatedly denied the
possibility of backporting
DirectX to Windows XP, arguing
that it would have to also
change the core of the
operating system.
Such a scenario is
also supported by the fact
that Microsoft is actually
moving forward with the
development of DirectX. The
company has released a preview
of DirectX 10.1, the API that
will be made available with
Windows Vista Service Pack 1.
And while Sinofsky's Windows
Omerta will only leak the
detail that Vista SP1 beta is
planned by the end of 2007,
Sam Glassenberg, Lead Program
Manager for the Microsoft
Direct3D Team revealed (in the
presentation slides) that
version 10.1 of Direct3D is
"coming soon."
Now, taking into
consideration that Direct3D
10.1 is intimately connected
with DirectX 10.1, which in
its turn is an integer part of
Windows Vista SP1, this means
that a public beta of the
operating system's first
service pack could be just
around the corner. Maybe just
a month, or a couple of months
away. Essentially Direct3D
10.1 is "a series of
extensions to Direct3D 10
supported on upcoming hardware
and in Windows Vista SP1,"
coming in "5 new APIs" and
is designed as an
"incremental update to D3D
10," according to
Glassenberg. (in the
presentation slides)

07.08.2007Why 'Seven' and Not SP1?
Microsoft is talking about the
future again, but why about a
product three years out when
customers are clamoring for
more immediate information
about Vista?
As
widely reported on Friday, a
slide presentation from
Microsoft's MGX sales
conference revealed that
Vista's successor, codename
Windows "7," would be
available in "approx 3
years." While Windows Vista
Service Pack 1 is listed as
"Next"actually, Microsoft
has two other pieces of
software coming firstno
timetable for delivery is
given.
I can only
characterize the slide deck
information as leaked, seeing
as how many reporters seemed
to have obtained the
PowerPoint presentation. Now
why is that? Maybe Microsoft
wants customers to know that
Windows 7 is coming around
2010. If so, why not give
Vista SP1 timing, which is
more immediate concern? The
answer, I suspect: Volume
licensing contract renewals.

19.02.2008Vista SP1 to be just 45MB over Windows Update?
Mary Jo Foley got a chance to
see a note sent to certain
testers of Vista SP1 earlier
this month and quite a few
interesting factoids have
turned up in it:
Q: How big is SP1?
A: Windows Vista
SP1 is approximately 45 MB
when delivered over Windows
Update and is designed to not
significantly change the UI or
regress application
compatibility.
Q: What are some examples
of support for emerging
technologies and
standards?
A:
With SP1, Windows Vista can
boot via EFI (Extensible
Firmware Interface) on an x64
machine. SP1 supports ExFAT, a
new file format that will be
used in flash memory storage
and consumer devices Support
for SD Advanced DMA Support to
improve transfer performance
and decrease CPU utilization
is part of SP1

30.07.2007Windows 7 SP1 details begin to surface
With Windows 7 out the door we already know Microsoft immediately starts work on the servicing of Windows 7. Engineers are now hard at work at
creating hot fixes for application compatibility and ironing out any bug reports they receive. The same process occurs for every version of Windows
once it has been classed released to manufacturing (RTM). Notorious for leaking Windows 7 builds during the beta phase, Wzor has provided some early
information on the Windows 7 SP1 beta. According to Wzor a beta of Windows 7 SP1 will be released in January 2010 and the schedule is two beta
releases and two release candidate releases.

Don't expect huge UI changes after installing SP1

28.09.2007Microsoft: Vista service pack coming in '08
Now is the time and the time is now: let's talk about Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Much has been made of what will or will not be included in
SP1 and when it will be released (some accurate, some otherwise). I'm here to set the story straight: we're in the process of developing and
deploying a Beta version of SP1. This post will describe for you what to expect from that effort and how you can be involved in the process.
First, a note on service packs. As you are aware, service packs are part of our traditional software lifecycle; they're something we do for most
major products as a commitment to continuous improvement. But, the servicing situation has changed with the advent of Windows Vista, as we no longer
rely solely on service packs as the main vehicle used to deploy system fixes and improvements. The Windows Update online service is one new way to
deliver many OS improvements. For example, yesterday in advance of SP1 we released via Windows Update two separate improvements to Windows Vista's
reliability and performance. We did this prior to SP1 in lieu of requiring customers to wait for these fixes to be rolled into a single service pack.
Beyond this, we improve the Windows Vista experience by continuing to work closely with software partners to ensure application compatibility. We
likewise align efforts with partners on the hardware side of the business to broaden the range of devices that work with Windows Vista and to
constantly improve device driver quality.

29.08.2007Windows Vista SP1 availability for technical customers
Mike Nash: On Monday (February 4th), we announced the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Overall, people are
excited to hear that we have reached this milestone, but some are disappointed they are not able to immediately download it.
<...> We've heard the feedback and I want to update you on our plans and progress for making SP1 available to our beta participants, our Volume
Licensing customers, and our MSDN/TechNet Plus subscribers:
- Late Friday we made SP1 RTM available to individuals and companies
who participated in the SP1 beta program
- At the end of this week we will be making the English version of Windows Vista SP1 available to
Volume Licensing customers. Other languages will follow soon after
- Later this month, SP1 will be available to MSDN and TechNet Plus
subscribers
For broad availability, we are still planning to release in mid-March, since we want to be sure that everyone has the
smoothest experience possible.
I want to be super-clear on one point: Windows Vista SP1 is final. It has been fully released to
manufacturing and we do not plan to make any changes to the SP1 code prior to public availability. We are confident in the quality of Windows Vista
SP1 and know that it will help improve our customers' experiences with Windows Vista.

11.02.2008Windows Vista SP1 RC released to public
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC is now available through Windows Update. Experience the WU based Vista SP1 installation by following 4 simple steps.
Windows Vista SP1 RC distributed through Windows Update will be applicable to Windows Vista machines that are running on any of the 36 languages

If you already installed the Service Pack to your machine by using the standalone package, you must uninstall
before you scan Windows Update for Windows Vista SP1.
Systems running on Windows Vista RTM require as many as three updates before SP1 can
be installed. These updates are permanent to your Windows Vista systems. Windows Update will detect your system configuration and offer the
prerequisite packages that are applicable to your system.

06.02.2008Windows Vista SP1 Update Resumes Tomorrow
From the Windows Vista Blog: I have a quick update for you about Windows Vista SP1. The Microsoft Update Blog contains some important information
about updates to the SP1 prerequisite distribution plan. Starting tomorrow, we are resuming the automatic update and installation of the Servicing
Stack Update.
In mid-April, we will begin distributing SP1 (in the first 5 languages) using the Automatic Update system. We have a lot of
Windows users, so not everyone will get it on the same day. In fact, it will go to a small percentage of Windows Vista users each day. The exact
timing of when you will receive it depends on when your PC is ready for Windows Vista SP1.
In addition to starting the automatic delivery
of the first 5 languages, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that also we're on track for the initial release of SP1 in the remaining
languages in mid-April.
