Microsoft's Windows 7 line-up: The good, the bad and the ugly

If you were one of those individuals holding out hope that Microsoft might go the way of Apple and move to one or two SKUs for Windows 7, your prayers have gone unanswered. But there still is some good news in whats on tap when Windows 7 ships, most likely in the third or fourth quarter of this year.

Microsoft went public on February 3 with its planned version (SKU) line-up but not pricing for Windows 7. After receiving an admittedly very quick SKU overview from the Softies yesteray, here are my first impressions of Microsofts new SKU plan...

Rumor of Xbox 360 SKU with Motion Controller

Recently there's been plenty of talk about the Xbox 360 price drops. The cheapest SKU out now; the Xbox 360 Arcade is said to go down to $200, which would make it the cheapest current generation console. Now rumor has it that it will also include a motion controller in its package. The Arcade SKU is said to include the usual arcade games, a 512MB memory card, the forthcoming Fall Dashboard Update preinstalled, and the motion controller as well as motion controlled games developed by Rare. It is said to release sometime in the Holiday 2008 season, but this leaves us wondering if this rumored SKU will be the same $200 rumored SKU said to be released in September.

It is said the motion controller will be sold separately and will be bundled along with a wider variety of games. No word on the price or release date has been confirmed yet.

Microsoft to introduce new 'netbook-like' Windows Server SKU

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer listed the areas where Microsoft plans to invest in the annual Strategic Update presentation for Wall Street analysts. During the event Ballmer said the company will introduce a new, low-priced Windows Server version in the next couple of months but acknowledged that Microsoft has to decide on how it will handle Windows 7 SKU pricing for netbooks. Ballmer said about 90% of netbooks generally priced at $200 to $400 have been shipped with a stripped-down version of Windows XP and buyers of netbooks with the low-end version of Windows 7 will have the option of upgrading to the more powerful versions.

Exclusive - Nintendo Wii SKU soon obsolete - refresh soon?

Nintendo's hugely popular Wii console has entered the internal status of 'early warning' of a major American retail outlet, meaning the current stock-keeping unit will start being phased out within 90 days and will be replaced, shortly there after, by a newer SKU.

A trusted source with access to internal documents has given Neowin this exclusive story. It remains to be seen whether this development is due to new bundles being released or perhaps coloured versions of the Wii, but the current SKU will definitely begin to be removed from sales channels within 90 days.

We will report more on this story as new facts come to light.

Windows Live Messenger Goes Final and More

After a year in the making, the Windows Live Messenger production has come to an end, and to the delight of thousands of people.

The Download Page has been updated with build 353 (the final version) and is available for download now. It hasn't been extensively tested yet, but it's presumable that the countless bugs testers received in previous betas have been resolved; most notably several serious problems that were spotted when running it with Windows 7.

Complimenting the release of WLM 2009, the "Messenger Plus!" team has announced a release of the compatible (build 4.80) version of the patcher to be before the end of the month.

This seems promising. Hopefully the two will work well together, and we can FINALLY get what we've been asking for in the entire WLM experience.

EU to continue anti-trust case, regardless of Windows 7 E

The recent shenanigans between the EU and Microsoft have been rather tedious; it's taken a long time for anything to happen, really, and Microsoft has even had to cancel a hearing once. However, with the recent introduction of Windows 7 E, many thought that the trouble would be over... but they were wrong. Nope, according to Ars Technica, the EU is still set on pursuing their anti-trust case with the Redmond company, despite them going out of their way to create a new SKU just for the region.

The Problem with Bundling

Joe Wilcox: On Friday I spoke with two product executives from a major OEM about some forthcoming new PCs and notebooks. During the conversation, I asked about their Windows Media Center strategy. The OEM no longer has one, and Vista integration is the reason.

The response is surprising, because Media Center integration into Vista was supposed to benefit Microsoft, its customers and partners. But that's not how this OEM sees it. Reasoning: The discreet SKU's disappearance makes Media Center differentiation more difficult among OEMs, so there is no real competitive advantage. The product executives expressed concern that Media Center promotion for the OEM's products might benefit competitors.

The conversation was a broad indictment of Microsoft's whole Vista SKU strategy. Rather than differentiate products around Vista SKUs, the OEM has instead returned to emphasizing performance metrics and made product design a greater priority. That's opposite the intention of Microsoft's Vista SKU strategy, which was supposed to encourage greater differentiation around operating system capabilities.

Poll Results: Which edition of Windows 7 do you plan on buying?

It took some time, but our poll has hit the 1000 vote mark, so it's time to shut it down and start anew.

Our poll for the last few months has been Which edition of Windows 7 do you plan on buying? The results are in...

Windows 7 Home Premium: 237
Windows 7 Professional: 208
Windows 7 Ultimate: 555

The results aren't really surprising, and we were certainly expecting that most people will simply want the most complete SKU. Of course we have to remember that Windows 7 Ultimate is supposedly going to be available in very limited quantities, so there's a good change that the above results are a fairly poor representation of the success Windows 7's various SKUs are going to face. That being said, it's always fun to get your opinion!

Don't forget, we have plenty of ongoing discussions regarding Windows 7 taking place in our community forums. Don't miss out!

We should have a new poll up and running on Monday. Thanks for your votes everyone!..
