Windows Vista's new security features
Microsoft's new operating system won't be out until late 2006, but here's a look at some of the new security features expected.
It seems that every time I sit down with Microsoft to discuss Windows Vista, something has been changed or added, which is good. In some cases, something has been removed, which is bad. One and a half years from launch, I understand that beta code changes frequently. Here's my standard disclaimer: the following article is based on the last build from Microsoft, Windows Vista build 5219, released September 2005.

04.10.2005FBI loses Laptops & Weapons at a Smaller Rate
The good news is that losses
are dropping. The bad news is
that they're still happening,
and the FBI doesn't know if
secure information is entering
the wild. Completed in 2002,
the Office of the Inspector
General (OIG, part of the
Department of Justice) did an
initial audit of the Bureau's
losses and found the FBI was
losing 3.82 functional
weapons, 5.07 training weapons
and 10.71 laptops a month. The
findings caused the OIG to do
a follow-up audit, the results
of which have just been
released: 1.09 functional
weapons, 0.41 training weapons
and 2.64 laptops lost each
month.
The OIG
applauds the Bureau's
improvement, but questions the
FBI's procedures for handling
such events and also notes
that the FBI doesn't even
know which of its computers
contain classified
information. " Perhaps most
troubling, the FBI could not
determine in many cases
whether the lost or stolen
laptop computers contained
sensitive or classified
information. Such information
may include case information,
personal identifying
information, or classified
information on FBI
operations ." The
substantial progress made by
the Bureau is encouraging, but
the OIG still claims that the
FBI " has not taken
sufficient corrective action
on several recommendations
contained in our 2002 audit
report ."

01.08.2007Wi-Fi security still too complicated, expert claims
Although the 802.1x access protocol is a must for wireless network security, companies rarely use it and thus leave the door open for hackers,
according to Robert Lamprecht, IT advisory supervisor at
KPMG.
The protocol lets users on either wireless or wired local networks set up a connection and prevent
others from accessing the port they are trying to use if authentication fails.
"With 802.1x unauthorized users can't get access
to your network; without it you are vulnerable to people who can come in and steal information," said Lamprecht, who spoke at the European Computer
Audit Control and Security Conference in Stockholm.
