According to the
APC Mag website, the
popular
xpmediacentre.com.au community site, managed to grab windows7.com.au, while
Gavin Howard from IT training agency
Which Training was quick off the mark to
snatch up Windows7.net.au. Howard told APCmag.com that he was “probably looking to sell off” the domain name in the coming year, saying
“I’d love to get $10,000, $15,000 or even $20,000 for it”.
While I doubt that Microsoft is losing any sleep
over the many, many name variations for Windows7 domains on offer around the world, the case of
Vista Windows Pty Ltd springs to mind; the company was "allowed" to continue using the domain because it was registered way
before Microsoft decided on Vista for its latest version of Windows, as far back as 1999.
Microsoft Windows enthusiasts have in the past
started their websites using the trademarked name variants of client (or Server) releases, and eventually, most succumbed to the requests of Microsoft
to stop using them, for
reward or the
threat
of legal action. It remains to be seen if customers become confused enough to believe that the Australian variants of the Windows 7 address,
warrant any sort of legal action on Microsoft's part in the future.
For now, I wouldn't hold out for that 5 figure compensation,
should you find a "forgotten" Windows 7 domain still available for registration somewhere.

30.10.2008Windows DNS bug fix can impair firewalls, including ZoneAlarm
BetaNews has confirmed through its own testing this morning that a critical patch, released yesterday by Microsoft as part of a worldwide DNS bug fix
effort, can and does impact the functionality of software firewalls.
Multiple reports from users since yesterday afternoon have
complained of systems incapable of contacting the Internet after having implemented patch KB951748. This patch makes a major change to the way the
operating system handles DNS requests. Specifically, it implements a system that enables source port randomization -- a way to scramble the
address from which a request is placed -- as a security measure to thwart malicious users from being able to craft false DNS responses, and thus
"poison" the caches of DNS servers.

26.11.2008Is Microsoft Cracking Down on DVD Ripping?
Tom Spring: Is Microsoft trying to thwart DVD-ripping on PCs using Windows Vista with the new beta of Vista Service Pack 1?
As I
tested the public
beta release of Vista SP1, I noticed the
update crippled a popular DVD cracking program called DVD43.
DVD43 is a free utility that disables a DVD's
Content Scramble System (CSS) copy protection technology. Once a
DVD's copy protection is disabled, you can copy its content using one of several third-party programs. You may be using DVD43 and not realize it,
because it often is the engine of other ripping programs.
When I updated my Windows Vista operating system with the beta of Vista
SP1, DVD43 wouldn't load. Instead, I saw an error message about a missing driver--even after I uninstalled and then reinstalled DVD43. A colleague of
mine had a similar experience on a PC that also had been updated with the latest beta release of Vista SP1.

21.02.2008A word with you, please, Microsoft
If Microsoft's 1976 was all
about "hobbyists" and
"Altair," then its buzzwords
for 2006 were things such as
"connected entertainment,"
"interoperability,"
"Zune," and "Windows
Vista."
And don't
forget those "priorities" --
as in the ones Bill Gates
chose to reorder last year as
part of his transition to
philanthropy. Those are some
of the trends visible on an
interactive timeline that
displays the most commonly
used words from key
Microsoft-related speeches,
interviews, memos and other
documents during the past
three decades.
The
timeline, at
seattlepi.com/microwords, was
created by the Seattle P-I
using the open-source Tagline
Generator, a program by
blogger Chirag Mehta. It
presents words in a form known
as a tag cloud -- in varying
sizes, depending on how often
they're used; and in
different shades, based on
when a particular word was
first used. The result is a
scrolling snapshot of the
competitors, products,
technologies and issues at the
center of Microsoft's
consciousness across the
years.
For example,
the timeline shows that an
early focus on "CD-ROM" and
"floppy" gives way to
"Internet" in the mid-1990s,
marking the beginning of
Microsoft's belated scramble
to adapt its products for the
online world.

02.01.2007Internet resumption still shaky after Taiwan quake
Authorities in Hong Kong have
warned of Internet and email
congestion when businesses
reopen after the festive break
as workers scramble to repair
undersea cables hit by a quake
last week. Repairs to the data
cables will be completed
progressively until the end of
January, Hong Kong's Office
of the Telecommunications
Authority said Monday. While
many Internet links have been
restored since the
7.1-magnitude quake off
Taiwan's coast last Tuesday,
access remains slow in many
areas.
Exacerbating
the delay in getting services
back to normal is a major
fault on one of two repair
ships despatched to the Luzon
Strait between Taiwan and the
Philippines to fix the cables.
The ship had to be sent back
to port for urgent repairs of
its own and is expected to be
out of action for a week. "As
most businesses and schools
(staff) will resume operations
(Tuesday), Internet users
visiting overseas websites may
experience slow response or
congestion," the Hong Kong
authority said in a
statement...

02.01.2007Sony admits, fixes problem with DVD DRM
Sony has said that it will
replace the DVD titles that
caused problems for many of
its customers thanks to the
company's ARccOS copy
protection. ARccOS is a
secondary level of DRM on
Sony's DVDs, used in
conjunction with the standard
form of copy protection:
Content Scramble System.
ARccOS intentionally
introduces errors to certain
sectors of the DVD so that
ripping software sequentially
will generate errors in the
ripped product. Most, but not
all, DVD players can read
instructions on the disc to
skip over these intentional
errors without affecting the
expected video output.
Although the company
has been using ARccOS on its
DVDs for some time now, a
recent update to the copy
protection scheme caused the
DVDs to be incompatible with
certain DVD players. Sony has
apparently decided to tweak
its ARccOS software once again
in an attempt to fix the
problem. Sony claimed in its
statement that they only
received a miniscule number of
complaints " on less than
one-thousandth of one percent
of affected discs
shipped ," and said that
the update has solved all
compatibility issues. It looks
like Sony decided to head the
lawsuits off at the pass this
time by fixing the DVDs'
protection software before too
many discs got out, but the
company sure isn't making a
good name for itself.

19.04.2007Technology for Legally Burning Copy-Protected Content
Its ironic: The copy protection created to stop the illegal copying of DVDs is the same technology that has prevented users from legally downloading
paid-for content and then burning it to a DVD for playback in their living rooms. At the time the copy-protection rules were created, they had no
provision for user recording of protected content to a recordable DVD, as opposed to a factory-replicated DVD-ROM.
All of that changed
about a month ago. The DVD Copy Control Association passed an amendment to the Content Scramble System (CSS)--the copy protection used on commercial
DVDs--specifying a standard for recording electronic downloads to recordable DVD media. The standard, dubbed Qflix, is still in its infancy, but
already a movement is afoot to bring this technology to drugstores, and perhaps even to a PC desktop near you.

17.10.2007Keylogging Trojan Dodges Anti-virus Detection
A new variant of the Russian
Trojan Gozi is circulating on
the Web, this time armed with
a keylogging function and the
ability to scramble itself so
it is difficult to detect by
anti-virus software. The new
Trojan is believed to have
been spreading since April 17
and like the original, which
was discovered earlier in
2007, it steals data from
encrypted Secure Sockets Layer
streams. The latest variant
was uncovered May 7 by Don
Jackson, a security researcher
at SecureWorks in Atlanta.
Jackson also found one data
cache from the Gozi variant
that contained 2,000 new
victims and several thousand
bank and credit card account
numbers, Social Security
numbers and other personal
information. SecureWorks
researchers suspect that this
not the only server with
stolen Gozi data that exists.
" If you were
infected before mid-May, then
it will act like a rootkit and
hide itself on your PC and
will make itself undetectable
by most anti-virus
software ," he said. To
remedy this, he suggested that
home users reboot their
computers in Safe Mode and run
an anti-virus scan assuming
their anti-virus vendors have
a signature for the Gozi
variant. The newest instalment
of Gozi has a compression
component that it uses to
uncompress the blocks of code
that it needs to run. When it
no longer needs those blocks
of code, it recompresses them,
making it almost impossible to
see everything the variant is
doing in memory and that much
harder for anti-virus scans to
detect.

26.05.2007Court Ruling Could Crimp Security Features In Next-Gen DVDs
A judge has ruled that
Kaleidescape Incorporated did
not breech its contract with
the DVD Copy Control
Association over its use of
the consortium's Content
Scramble System and due to
poor wording in the documents
a key portion of the CSS spec
was not part of the license.
As a result, new managed copy
features for current and
next-generation DVDs, already
a year overdue, may be delayed
even further. The rollout of
final security specs for high
definition DVDs include a new
capability for letting
consumers make copies of
movies on a controlled basis.
Discussions for adding similar
features to existing DVDs may
also get shoved to the back
burner.
The final
spec for the Advanced Access
Content System is due out for
final member review in 60 days
and expected to appear in
products before the end of the
year, a schedule that could
slip with the Kaleidescape
ruling. " There will
absolutely be increased
scrutiny of the AACS documents
after this court decision, but
I really hope and trust that
doesn't delay our
release ," said Michael
Ayers, who manages the group
that licenses AACS. Unlike the
DVD CCA, the AACS group will
provide tests and test centers
for licensees to test their HD
media systems. However, they
will be limited in scope and
will not be available until
sometime after the final AACS
spec is released. " There
are several elements of
compliance. The tests look at
a basic part of compliance,
but they are not a guarantee
of compliance ," said
Ayers.
