Windows 7 RTM and MSDN Academic Alliance MSDN AA Availability Update
At the start of this week, I posted an article informing users of the fact that Windows 7 RTM was available for download via MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDN AA). Looking at the comments that have been piling up I think that an update is necessary to clarify some aspects.

22.07.2009Engineering Windows 7: Our Next Engineering Milestone
Steven Sinofsky: This post is about the path from RC to what we call RTM, release to manufacturing. RTM is not one point in time but a process as
from RTM we enable the PC manufacturers to begin their processes of building Windows 7 images for new PCs, readying downloads for existing machines,
and preparing the full supply chain to deliver Windows 7 to customers. Thus RTM is the final stage in our engineering of Windows 7, but the
engineering continues from RTM until you can purchase Windows 7 and Windows 7 PCs in stores at General Availability, or GA...

Windows Vista will RTM at build 6.0.6000
A source close to Microsoft
has confirmed to me that
Windows Vista will in fact
carry the build number
6.0.6000 . He found this
out by receiving a mail with
the build stamp "Microsoft
Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16384"
so that ends that
speculation.
Also
the MSDN subscription page has
been updated with the
following information
Windows Vista
and Office 2007: Availability
on MSDN Subscriber
Downloads
Windows
Vista and Office 2007 will be
available through MSDN
Subscriber downloads within 7
days of release to manufacture
(RTM). MSDN Subscriptions is
committed to making new
content available to our
subscribers as soon as is
practical.
Looks
like we'll be seeing this
appear soon.
Update: Several key
Microsoft employees has firmly
stated that Vista has not been
released to manufacturing. The
day might be soon, but is
certainly not today, or
tomorrow. There's still a bit
more work to do. Build
6000.16384 is real, but it
also doesn't mean RTM. These
days, Microsoft doesn't have
to increase the major version
number when building, so
theoretically, any sub-set of
build 6000 (6000.16385, 16386,
etc...) can be RTM. source

When will you get Windows 7 RTM?
When will I get Windows 7 RTM?
Brandon LeBlanc: I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you
have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM. Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close
out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people or audiences would get the final RTM code.
While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to
get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.

Windows 7 RTM contains a rather nasty chkdsk bug
Windows 7 RTM, which will be distributed to MSDN/TechNet and technical beta testers tomorrow, contains a nasty memory leak when the chkdsk command is
initiated. The bug occurs when the CHKDSK /R command is initiated on a non-system volume. Memory usage of the chkdsk.exe process soars until the
system is using over 90% physical memory. In some cases this will cause the system to become unresponsive and unstable. Some are calling the bug a
"show stopper", whilst others (Randall Kennedy) claim it could derail the Windows 7 launch. It's worth noting that Kennedy claimed in November
2008 that Microsoft had delayed the Windows 7 beta to early 2009, even though company officials always stated this was the case.

Earlier today the guys over at GeekSmack.net "confirmed" that Windows 7 was set to RTM(Release to market) on July 13, which also coincides with

Windows 7 is indeed set to RTM on July 13. After a year of furious beta testing and continuous leaks every other week, Microsoft is finally ready to
give Windows 7 the green light to hit the market. Currently the Windows 7 team is working on polishing off the RTM build so that no show-stopper bugs
are present in Windows 7.

Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM and general Availability
You may have seen some of the recent news articles that have started to roll out around the RTM and General availability dates of Windows 7. As

OEMs Pick Up Windows 7 RTM Code Today in Redmond
Brandon LeBlanc: When we announced Windows 7 had
RTMd on Wednesday, I posted that OEMs would receive the RTM code within a few days. Well, its been a few days! Earlier today, a handful of OEMs
arrived in Redmond to pick up their RTM code. In the past when a Windows release reaches RTM, we have traditionally given some/selected OEMs the
opportunity to come to Redmond and pick up the RTM code personally. I thought it would be neat to showcase these OEMs that came to campus today as the
RTM code is handed off to them to begin preparing for General Availability (GA) on October 22, 2009!
