What's Behind the Windows Server 2008 Delay?
Microsoft published almost no details earlier this week with its announcement that Windows Server 2008's release to manufacturing (RTM) date had
slipped from late this year into early next. Only vague explanations of needing to meet high quality standards were given, leaving most in the dark.
Does the delay mean that Windows 2008 development has hit some kind of snag, and could more delays be coming?
IDC Analyst Al
Gillen doesn't think so. Microsoft, he said, "Didn't give a very good explanation about why" there was a delay. Still, he continued, "I'm not so
sure it's such a big deal, as long as RTM doesn't extend beyond the launch date."
That date is Feb. 27, 2008, the day that
will see the much-hyped "Launch Wave." Now, Windows 2008 is in real danger of not being available for the event, which could be deflating for
Microsoft.
"I was surprised, yeah, and frankly a little disappointed" in the announced delay, Gillen said. "We've been
waiting for the product a long period of time, and once they the launch date, it appeared had the launch schedule well under
control."

Engineering Windows 7: Our Next Engineering Milestone
Steven Sinofsky: This post is about the path from RC to what we call RTM, release to manufacturing. RTM is not one point in time but a śprocessť as
from RTM we enable the PC manufacturers to begin their processes of building Windows 7 images for new PCs, readying downloads for existing machines,
and preparing the full supply chain to deliver Windows 7 to customers. Thus RTM is the final stage in our engineering of Windows 7, but the

Why Windows 7 will be out later this year
With the public Windows 7 release candidate right around the corner, and development towards the RTM on track, people are wondering "When is the
final release date for Windows 7?" With many dates flying around, I personally think that Windows 7 will be out later this year, and here's why:
First, let's back up a bit. Microsoft has set an internal date of January, 2010, approximately 3 years after Vista. Now let's say for the sake
of argument that turns out to be true. This would be a big mistake for Microsoft because they'll miss the crucial holiday season, when obviously
people will be buying new computers and software, and we all remember how badly Vista's release went.
