Kaspersky hit with SQL injection

A group of Romanian hackers had sent a warning email to Kaspersky that an imminent attack is about to happen, and it in fact did just that, 1 hour after sending the email. The attack was a SQL injection into the company's database, but was unable to extract any real data, because the hackers were not advanced enough to. An obviously embarrassed Kaspersky, an anti-virus and Internet security software developer, was ashamed that their web site was breached. The attack made an SQL injection on the newly launched US web site, which could ruin the company's reputation in the market of Internet security.

EU Offers Translation Resource to Developers

The European Commission is offering translation software developers free access to around one million sentences translated between 22 of the European Union's 23 official languages. It hopes the data will help improve the quality of a variety of language tools, including grammar and spelling checkers, online dictionaries and machine translators-- particularly in less well-served languages such as Latvian or Romanian.

The sentences are mostly drawn from the "Acquis Communautaire," the body of law that must be implemented by all new E.U. member states, and include the treaties, directives and regulations adopted by the E.U., and rulings from the European Court of Justice.

Translated by professional translators, they cover topics such as IT, telecommunications, labor law, agriculture and fishing.

Microsoft provides latest Windows 7 roadmap

Microsoft has been releasing monthly updates to OEM's on their upcoming Windows 7 operating system.

Techarp has posted their latest update where Microsoft notes that they are currently finishing product research based on feedback from OEM and end users. This will help them determine potential Windows 7 offerings / SKUs. Microsoft aims to provide detailed Windows 7 SKU information sometime this month. The next OEM update is scheduled to be released around November 13, 2008.

Interestingly, Microsoft has revealed the "Windows 7 Language Waves". Localised versions of Windows 7 will be released over 101 days after RTM. These are not general release dates but dates that indicate when the various languages will be finalised.

Wave 0 - RTM - English, Spanish, Japanese, German, French
Wave 1 - RTM + 14 days - Italian, Dutch, Russian, Simplified Chinese
Wave 2 - RTM + 28 days - Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, Korean
Wave 3 - RTM + 45 days - Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong), Czech, Portuguese, Hungarian
Wave 4 - RTM + 59 days - Danish, Norwegian (Bokmål), Finnish
Wave 5 - RTM + 73 days - Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Ukrainian
Wave 6 - RTM + 87 days - Thai, Romanian, Lithuanian, Slovak, Bulgarian
Wave 7 - RTM + 101 days - Estonian, Croatian, Serbian Latin, Latvian, Slovenian

In the OEM update Microsoft also detailed Windows Anytime Upgrade (WAU). Like Vista, Windows 7 users will be able to upgrade to a "more premium" version to unlock additional features. More details will be forthcoming in Novembers update presumably when Microsoft release SKU information.

Microsoft is also planning a Windows 7 Tech Guarantee Program, where end users you purchase Vista systems will have the option (for a limited time) of upgrading to Windows 7.

Eligible Editions : Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Ultimate
Eligible Languages : Wave 0 to Wave 4
Available Upgrade Paths : Like-to-like product paths only (e.g. from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium)

Microsoft OneCare Due Before Summer

Microsoft plans to release its subscription security program before the summer and to challenge its main rivals on pricing, it has emerged.

Windows OneCare Live marks Microsoft's long-anticipated entry into the consumer antivirus market, which has been the domain of specialised vendors, led by McAfee and Symantec. Two years ago, Microsoft announced its intent to offer antivirus products when it bought Romanian antivirus software developer GeCad Software.

The software giant plans to release the final version of OneCare before summer and to charge about $50 per year for the product , sources familiar with the company's plans said on Monday. The company is scheduled to announce the pricing and availability details later this week, they said. A Microsoft representative had no immediate comment.

Piracy worked for us, Romania president tells Gates

Pirated Microsoft Corp software helped Romania to build a vibrant technology industry, Romanian President Traian Basescu told the company's co-founder Bill Gates on Thursday.

"Piracy helped the young generation discover computers. It set off the development of the IT industry in Romania," Basescu said during a joint news conference with Gates.

Foreign investors say Romania's IT sector is one of most promising industries in the fast-growing economy thanks to high level of technical education in Romania, low wages and the country's thriving underworld of computers hackers.

International Phishing Gang Arrested

Several Romanian-based phishing scams were brought to light on Monday as 38 people were charged with stealing names, Social Security numbers, credit card data and other personal information from unsuspecting Internet users. This global crime ring sought to rip off thousands of consumers and hundreds of financial institutions, according to indictments unsealed in Los Angeles and New Haven, Conn. The two cases, which were linked by two Romanians who participated in both schemes, marked the latest example of what the Justice Department describes as a growing worldwide threat posed by organized crime.

" International organized crime poses a serious threat not only to the United States and Romania, but to all nations, " Deputy Attorney General Mark R. Filip said in a statement from Bucharest, where he announced the charges. " Criminals who exploit the power and convenience of the Internet do not recognize national borders; therefore our efforts to prevent their attacks cannot end at our borders either. "
