Web applications are among the most common computing services that are exposed to the Internet, and thus they pose an inviting target to anyone who wants to break into your network to steal sensitive information, tamper with your data, or otherwise compromise your system.

Ensuring the security of a Web application is a serious task, and requires consideration throughout the design, development, deployment, and operation phases. It should not be viewed as something that can be slapped onto an existing application, or achieved simply by applying existing platform security features.

iPhone apps: Try before you buy

You don't need an iPhone to try out iPhone apps. Since the application platform is just a browser, you can see right now what some of the apps that people are building will look like on your phone.

We've covered Digg and OneTrip already, but to see even more iPhone apps all together on one page, check out iPhoneApplic ationList. For best results you should use Safari, although I've also had good luck previewing iPhone apps in Firefox.

Since the apps are just Web pages, doubtless there will be many, many iPhone app directories springing up soon.

Twitter Apps - Can we trust them?

Twitter Apps - these are the 3rd party applications which interact with twitter and provide some extra/advanced services that twitter doesn't provide. One such app is Twply which sends your twitter replies to your Inbox. This is really great, whenever someone replies to me, I get notified. There is one problem with such twitter apps. Some apps, like Twply, requires your twitter password to interact with your twitter account. There is no way these twitter apps can fetch your twitter information without your password. Twply was launched on Thursday January 1st 2009 and sold to SitePoint in less than 24 hrs! All the data, including your twitter password is now sold to SitePoint.

iPhone web apps: what happened?

Remember back that long time ago when Steve Jobs announced Iphone web apps? At that time web apps were supposed to be better than traditional apps for security reasons. In the press release it was said "applications created using Web 2.0 standards can extend IPhone's capabilities without compromising its reliability or security". So what happened? Let's take a closer look at why the web apps failed at keeping Apple from releasing the SDK. It was first thought if outside parties were able to develop apps that it would destabilize the platform. While the concern is relevant, any decent quality assurance department will be able rid you of that risk.

Flaw in Windows 7 and Vista could allow remote reboot

Security experts warned Tuesday that a vulnerability in Microsoft's implementation of the SMB2 protocol can be exploited via the net to crash or reboot Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems. An exploit written in Python is already available and being tested by security experts. Initial tests by heise security indicate the exploit enabled a remote reboot of a Vista system. However, in the test, the exploit had no apparent effect on a computer running Windows 7. Microsoft has yet to acknowledge the issue and release an official update. The only current workaround is to close the SMB ports by un-ticking the boxes for file and printer access in the firewall settings.

Voice Controlled Media Center From Amulet

Amulet Devices has announced a Windows Media Center remote control that has a microphone stick at the top of it, letting you speak into the remote and issue voice commands to your television. They have a video showing how you can name an artist and have Media Center play music by that artist, or ask your TV to change the channel or find the channel airing a specific show, among other possible applications of the remote.

The remote has some position sensing technology built in, letting the remote know when youve tilted it towards your mouth. This way, the remote doesnt follow commands from the TV, switching shows and music based on what comes out of the speakers, but instead only listens when you lift it to specifically issue a command.
