New test release of Microsoft's App-V for Windows 7 available

Microsoft posted for download on February 27 of an update to its App-V virtualization product that is designed to work with the Windows 7 Beta.

App-V is based on the SoftGrid technology Microsoft acquired in early 2006 when it bought Softricity. App-V lets users run applications without actually installing them on a local machine. This allows companies who want to make available a single image of Office or a custom line-of-business application to multiple users by pushing it out to them without having to touch each desktop. It also enables users run applications virutally that might conflict if run simultaneously on their Windows machines.

App Store Loosens the Restrictions

From the start, Apple has been very selective about the apps that are allowed to enter into the AppStore.

However, today a representative from Apple called up 'Air-o-Matic' (the developer of "Pull my Finger") to let him know that his app will now be accepted as part of a new genre. In September, his app was denied by Apple for it being a "limited utility".

This is fantastic news for Apple Developers that have previously been denied, and hopefully means that we will see a greater selection of apps in the App Store soon!

Flaw in Windows 7 and Vista could allow remote reboot

Security experts warned Tuesday that a vulnerability in Microsoft's implementation of the SMB2 protocol can be exploited via the net to crash or reboot Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems. An exploit written in Python is already available and being tested by security experts. Initial tests by heise security indicate the exploit enabled a remote reboot of a Vista system. However, in the test, the exploit had no apparent effect on a computer running Windows 7. Microsoft has yet to acknowledge the issue and release an official update. The only current workaround is to close the SMB ports by un-ticking the boxes for file and printer access in the firewall settings.
