Flaw in Windows 7 and Vista could allow remote reboot

Security experts warned Tuesday that a vulnerability in Microsoft's implementation of the SMB2 protocol can be exploited via the net to crash or reboot Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems. An exploit written in Python is already available and being tested by security experts. Initial tests by heise security indicate the exploit enabled a remote reboot of a Vista system. However, in the test, the exploit had no apparent effect on a computer running Windows 7. Microsoft has yet to acknowledge the issue and release an official update. The only current workaround is to close the SMB ports by un-ticking the boxes for file and printer access in the firewall settings.

Windows XP SP3 Update Breaks Home Server Remote Access

Windows Home Server users are reporting Remote Access problems after updating their home computers to Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Following the update, attempting to access those home computers via Windows Home Server’s Remote Access features brings up a dialog asking the user to add their homeserver.com domain to the Trusted Sites list in Internet Explorer. Voice Controlled Media Center From Amulet

Amulet Devices has announced a Windows Media Center remote control that has a microphone stick at the top of it, letting you speak into the remote and issue voice commands to your television. They have a video showing how you can name an artist and have Media Center play music by that artist, or ask your TV to change the channel or find the channel airing a specific show, among other possible applications of the remote.

The remote has some position sensing technology built in, letting the remote know when youve tilted it towards your mouth. This way, the remote doesnt follow commands from the TV, switching shows and music based on what comes out of the speakers, but instead only listens when you lift it to specifically issue a command.

Getting to Know RDP

The Remote Desktop Protocol, or RDP, allows you to access machines remotely. It's a very useful piece of technology that has undoubtedly saved more than a few system admins over the years.

RDP has a long history of providing better and better remote access support. It was introduced in 1998 for Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition (TSE) and has evolved in almost every release of Windows since. Beginning with Windows 2000, almost anyone could easily access a server system remotely because Terminal Services was introduced as an optional Windows component and could be configured so you could use the system either as an actual Terminal Server or for what we call Remote Desktop today.

Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP delivered native Remote Desktop functionality, allowing you to control the system as if you were there locally. Today, I use Remote Desktop every day to access my home PC and server remotely, and to use my Media Center Extender.

Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, 2005 and 2008 are all affected and it's thought the Visual Studio patch will solve an issue that can affect certain types of applications.
