27.08.2008The Pirate Bay Trial: The Official Verdict - Guilty
After months of deliberation, the fate of the operators of "The Pirate Bay" has nearly been decided. The final verdict in the ongoing case was
decided just a short while ago, Peter, Fredrik, Gottfrid, and Carl, with a full year in prison for said people.
Despite the valiant
efforts by the operators' defense, they were declared guilty, but on what grounds? "Assisting in making copyright content available," was the
prosecution's argument. Not many people agree with the verdict, which is why we're all hoping for a successful appeal. It's not the end of the line
yet - the final decision could still be years away. Regardless of the outcome, Peter Sunde has assured the world that the Pirate Bay will continue to
operate despite the unfortunate developments - the website is not on trial - just its operators.
Hopefully the direction will turn, and
they'll get out unscathed - they didn't really do anything wrong.

Windows 7 is confirmed to still be under works, and despite the fact that Microsoft has tried to hold back the details about the next version of
Windows almost to perfection, details managed to slip through the company's closed doors.
The initial Windows 7 Milestone 1 build was
dropped at the end of 2007 and in early January 2008, but only to close partners of the company. But the development of Windows 7 has moved along
since version 6.1 Build 6519.1.x86.fre.winmain.071220-1525. From build 6519.1, Microsoft went up all the way to Version 6.1 Build 6574.1, reportedly
made available in March 2008. Although the latest build has higher digits it still stands under the category of Milestone 1.

17.01.2008T-Mobile invades busy London rail station
T-Mobile invaded London's Liverpool Street station yesterday to the shock and amazement of onlookers. 350 dancers performed surprise routines as
commuters passed through the concourse of Liverpool Street Station at 11am yesterday. 'Dance', created by Saatchi & Saatchi London, was
produced using hidden TV cameras within the station, which captured the reactions of commuters as they watched the dancers perform. The three-minute
guerrilla-style ad, which is part of T-Mobile's 'Life's for Sharing' campaign aired tonight on British terrestrial TV. The dancers
were similar to Internet based "flash mobs" where hundreds of people organise to meet in a public place and have water fights, pillow fights or
parties.

17.01.2009Japanese Debut "Smile Meter"
Japan has always been known for its quirky electronics, and a new device by Japanese electronics and health care company Omron Corp. does not
disappoint. Known as "Okao Catch," which means "face catch," the device analyzes the curves of the lips, eye movement and other facial
characteristics to decide how much a person is smiling using data collected from a million people and their smiles. In a demonstration, a camcorder
took videos of journalists covering the announcement. Percentage numbers indicating how much each person was smiling popped up in bold blue letters
next to their faces on a monitor, flashing higher or lower as their expressions changed.
According to Yasushi Kawamoto of Omron, the
company hopes to use its technology in the medical field, to assess the emotional state of patients. Okao Catch can also be useful for people who want
to perfect their smiles, or for robot communication to make it easier for machines to decipher human reactions

Acer: No Major Laptop Battery Improvement Coming
Jim Wong, president of IT
products at Acer Incorporated,
believes that notebook battery
safety (think overheating Sony
fiasco) is the main reason why
fuel cells and other advanced
technologies that can be used
as batteries in notebooks
won't likely be available for
years. Electricity is
generated by chemical
reactions inside a battery,
which produces heat as a
byproduct. With so much
chemistry involved, a lot more
product testing is required,
therefore battery technology
progresses more slowly, Wong
said. " The lithium-ion
materials used in batteries
today were discovered 30 to 40
years ago ."
Fuel cells are promising,
but the technology isn't
ready yet, and an
infrastructure needs to be in
place before the technology
can be widely used. Not only
would fuel packets or
refueling stations be needed
for mass adoption of the
technology in laptops, they
would also need to be approved
by aviation officials for use
on airplanes. The battery
issue is gaining more
importance recently because
the new era of multimedia
laptops threatens to shorten
battery life. " High
definition is a most
formidable enemy to battery
life ," said Wong. The
power needed for HD DVD and
Blu-ray Disc players in
notebooks can't simply be
offset by bigger batteries and
power management technology
aimed at shutting off parts of
the machine that aren't
immediately being used.
