28.02.2008Windows Vista RC2 This Friday
Thanks to Paul Thurrott for
the details:
Microsoft this Friday will
ship the final pre-release
version of Windows Vista and,
unexpectedly, will name the
release as Release Candidate 2
(RC2). Previously, Microsoft
had publicly asserted that it
would not ship an RC2
milestone release of Windows
Vista. But don't let the name
fool you: RC2 is really just a
standard interim build of
Vista and will not be given
out to millions of users as
was RC1.
The RC2
build is 5743, and Microsoft
is currently testing it
internally. As with the
previous interim build, 5728,
RC2 will be given out to beta
testers, MSDN and TechNet
subscribers, and a random,
limited selection of Consumer
Preview Program (CPP) members.

03.10.2006Microsoft Pulls Vista RC2 Public Download
On Monday, just two days after

(RC2) of Windows Vista
available to the public
through the Customer Preview
Program (CPP), Microsoft
pulled the download,
confounding many users who
were hoping to get the last
public prerelease version of
the product.
But
despite rumors of problems,
Microsoft says its removal of
RC2 was all part of the
plan.
"Windows
Vista RC2 was an interim
release distributed for the
purposes of final testing by a
limited audience," a
Microsoft representative told
me late yesterday. "Once that
limit was reached and the
necessary feedback was
collected from the CPP
audience, Microsoft closed the
site. For now, Windows Vista
RC1 remains the primary
version for distribution and
ongoing use."

13.10.2006Windows XP SP3 RC2 Refresh Available
A new "Refresh" version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 was made available Tuesday on Microsoft Update, according to Microsoft
representatives.
The primary goal of the release is for its developers to validate improvements to the Windows Update procedure, but a
couple of minor additions were also included. As with the previous RC2, you need to download and run a small program available from Microsoft Download
Center that makes a registry change on your PC in order for the update to be offered.

26.03.2008Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2 via Windows Update (Public Availability Program)
Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 is available to the public. Specific registry settings will allow you to be offered SP3 via Windows
Update.
Download the script and run it on a machine currently running Windows XP Service Pack 2. The script sets a registry key
on your system. The registry key is required for Windows Update to recognize your machine as a valid target for Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2.
Versions of Windows XP Service Pack 3 prior to Release Candidate 2 should be removed before attempting to use the registry key.
Windows Update will not offer Release Candidate 2 to machines with previous versions of the Windows XP Service Pack 3 beta.
It is
recommended that you apply the resulting update package to an activated, genuine copy of Windows XP, in a test environment. As with any pre-release
software, it is also recommended that you back up files and settings on your machine before applying this update package.

20.02.2008Windows Server 2008 RC2 Unlikely - Source
Windows Server 2008 is now close enough to being released to manufacturing that it's unlikely Microsoft will issue a third release candidate for the

Windows Server 2008 is currently in RTM "escrow," which means that
the product team thinks the code is good to go but wants to tinker with it just a bit longer, said a source close to Microsoft, who requested
anonymity. "There may very well not be an RC2," said the source.

Mary Jo Foley: A day after I

yet another new, public test build of its forthcoming collection of fixes and patches for Windows XP.
A company spokeswoman
e-mailed the following update on March 25:
“Windows XP SP3 RC2 Refresh was made publicly available today via Microsoft
Download Center. Weve made this release candidate available in order to receive further user feedback prior to the release of Windows XP
SP3.”
Update: As the Windows Serviceability Team announced, the "purpose of RC2 Refresh is to validate improvements

Japanese ... The application to enable download of XP SP3 RC2 Refresh is the same application as was used to distribute XP SP3 RC2. This is an
application that can be found at the

26.03.2008Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2 improves networking
Although news of this release is already a couple of days old, new features in Service Pack 3 RC2 for Windows XP that users can expect from this
package includes: stronger networking protocols with black hole router detection, and Network Access Protection, with Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)
that was provided for in Windows Vista. But as this isn’t a final version, if your system has been stable and running fine, I would suggest you
not to upgrade for a while and let the bugs and kinks be fully worked out. Take my word for it; it’ll definitely be worth the wait.
Service Pack 3 adds several networking and security improvements, and compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 security credential
providers. It also incorporates features previously available individually as separate updates, such as Micorsoft Windows Imaging Component (WIC),
Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0, and Wi-Fi Protected Access 2. To view a full list of the new features available in this pack, click here. You

26.03.2008Windows Vista Beta 2, RC1 and RC2 set to expire May 31, 2007
On May 18, pre-release
versions of Windows Vista
(Beta 2, RC1 or RC2) will
begin prompting users with
warning notifications about
the upcoming expiration on May
31. It is therefore
recommended to backup all data
and move to a final version of
Windows before the expiration
date. Between June 1 and
August 28, customers who
continue to use pre-release
versions of Windows Vista will
be able to log in for 2-hour
sessions to retrieve data.
After 2 hours of use, the PC
will automatically reboot
without providing the
opportunity to save data.
If the user would like
to switch editions of Vista,
the appropriate upgrade
version must be purchased and
a clean installation needs to
be performed. Customer Preview
Program participants will not
be receiving discounts, other
than the option to purchase
upgrade versions of Windows
Vista, as opposed to the full
versions. As already noted
previously, performing a roll
back to Windows XP is not
possible.

25.04.2007Windows Vista Build RC2 Download Discovered
A Customer Preview Program
download page has been
discovered for the second and
last release candidate for
Windows Vista before it hits
RTM. The build is, according
to the page, slated to be
numbered as 5744.061003-1945.
This is
particularly interesting since
Microsoft had previously
announced that it would no
longer release any builds as a
CPP. We are still unsure as to
what Microsoft is planning
with this build.
Nothing is said about the
build except that it contains
the usual bug fixes,
performance and compatibility
improvements. As such, it is
still unknown if the build
will contains the maximized
borders improvements that were
announced yesterday by the
Windows team.
Thanks to VistaReloade
d for the heads
up! UPDATE: The
page has now been taken down
by Microsoft. This may mean
that the build is being
uploaded to the MS Servers.
This is the same situation as
with the latest release (Build
5728); the page had been
temporarily taken down as the
build was being uploaded.
More to
