15.09.2006Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta Build Clarification
Just a quick note to anyone that plans on testing the new Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta. The build Microsoft posted
here is in
fact a much newer build than either the original Server 2008 RC1 or Vista SP1 RC1. While the original RC1 was Build 6001.17051 for Server 2008 and
6001.17052 for Vista SP1, the new Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V beta is substantially newer at 6001.17119 and may even contain further
stability/performance improvements to the actual OS so it may be worth checking it out even if you don't intend to test the Hyper-V bits. Also note
that due to Hyper-V being a 64-Bit OS only option, there is no 32-Bit build available of the newer Server 2008 RC1.

07.09.2006Windows Vista RC1 Download
Page Discovered
Only hours after Microsoft
released Windows Vista build
5536 to the public, their RC1
download page has been
discovered. The RC1 build,
which was, according to Paul
Thurrott, finalized yesterday,
is most likely
not there
yet, and since the download
ISO is approximately 3.12 GB,
it appears to be the Beta 2
version.
The page
is about the same as the
pre-RC1 download page but
removes the references to the
100000 copies limit, and, of
course, replaces the pre-RC1
terms for RC1.
Microsoft is expected to
make Windows Vista's first
Release Candidate available
broadly in early september,
and is already preparing it,
just after releasing its
preview build.

02.09.2006Rumored New Vista plans

due anytime soon. RC1 would be
in this case, build 5520,
which has been placed into

20.05.2008Download The Vista RC1 DirectX
10 SDK
With a lot of controversy
surrounding the upcoming RC1
release of Windows Vista (see
Should There Be Vista Beta
3?), Microsoft is already
releasing software which
requires Vista RC1 to
run.
Microsoft
has released the August
DirectX Software Development
Kit (SDK) which includes a
public pre-release of Direct
3D 10. Once again, Microsoft
has released an SDK before
releasing the platform needed
to use parts of it.
According the
Microsoft, "Samples and
applications built with the
Direct3D 10 Technology Preview
in the August 2006 DirectX SDK
require Windows Vista RC1 to
run. The Windows Vista RC1
will be available to MSDN
subscribers." While this is
great news for developers,
many are wondering when they
will actually see Windows
Vista RC1. Many Beta Testers
are still expecting another
'interim' release before RC1
is released to the public.

07.08.2006Analysis: Notable changes surface in Windows Server 2008 RC1
Yesterday,
Microsoft
announced that Release Candidate 1 (RC1) of Windows Server 2008 has been released to the public. This near-final test build of the server release
incorporates a couple of new features and what is sure to be deemed an "enhancement" to the community. In this piece, I'll take a look at the new
capabilities in Group Policy, and an update to Windows Genuine Advantage, that were introduced with RC1.
An introduction to Group
Policy Preferences
Windows Server 2008 RC1 incorporates a feature called Group Policy Preferences, essentially the old
PolicyMaker Standard Edition and Policy Share Manager in new form. Preferences is now part of the Group Policy Management Console.
In a nutshell, preferences allow you to "suggest" an initial configuration to your users while still giving them the ability to change them.
Let's delve a little deeper into this.
