24.09.2008Windows Vista Build 5219 to be
released at MS PDC
Microsoft will tomorrow
release a refreshed build of
Windows Vista at it's
Professional Developer's
Conference.
Thi
s build is 5219.
No. It is not
Beta 2. No. It is not Beta 1.
Yes. It is newer than Beta
1. It is a pre-beta-2 build.
Screenshots leaked
onto the internet earlier
today have led people to
erroneously claim that the
5219 build compiled on 050824
(24 August, 2005) is the build
that will be released at
PDC.
This is
untrue. Contrary to popular
belief, every new build
generated is not necessarily
automatically incremented by
1. If this were true, the
correct 5219 build (more on
that below) would have been
one compiled before 050824.
Thus the 5219 050824 build
would not exist. We have
confirmed that the 0824 build
is a legitimate build which
was issued to OEM partners for
testing. Did you leak these
screenshots IBM as you did the
screenshots of the 5203 build?
Build 5219
compiled on 050830 (30 August
2005) is the one that will be
released at PDC.
How is that
possible? Simple. Microsoft
compiled mutiple builds of
5219 over the period of at
least a week before finally
declaring 050830 as the final
build for
5219.
Among the
changes from 0824 to 0830 is
the fact that the sidebar
visible in 0824 has been
removed in the 0830 build.
Revamped
Setup - key now determines the
installation type

13.09.2005Back from the PDCnext up, WinHEC
Steven Sinofsky: This has been an amazingly special week for the Windows 7 team. Were all incredibly appreciative of the reception of Windows 7 this
week at the PDC. Thank you!
All of us on the team have been closely watching the news reports and blogs of those who have been
kicking the tires of the Windows 7 pre-beta. The reception has been fantastic and were humbled by the excitement and enthusiasm for the release.
We know we have a ton of work ahead of us to get to beta and then the path to RTM, and the reception has definitely given us an extra special
motivation (though we were already pretty motivated).

30.10.2008Microsoft Endorses Product That Turns Off Vista UAC Nags
The latest version of a well-reviewed third-party security policy enhancement system for Windows Vista claims to solve what its manufacturer
characterizes as "not a secure solution" to a critical problem Windows historically had with administrator privileges on programs. But in the
announcement of the upgrade earlier this week, a key Microsoft product manager is quoted as having acknowledged Vista's own take on the solution was
not quite enough, effectively reversing his company's stand on User Account Control.
The product is BeyondTrust Privilege
Manager 3.5, and its key new feature is the ability to run Vista's UAC transparently without prompting the user for privilege elevation. In Monday's
press release, Microsoft director of client security product management Austin Wilson is quoted as not only endorsing the product, but appearing to
agree with BeyondTrust's key contention: that the UAC prompts were not only a nag but an insecure solution in itself.
