Windows 7 beta download imminent?

Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It would appear from the posting that Microsoft is currently readying site updates and download servers for the imminent release of the Windows 7 beta. Yesterday, German site Winfuture claimed that the beta would be released today and this could confirm the sites claims. The download link is currently inaccessible. It's entirely possible that once the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.

Windows 7 "Pre-Beta" Build 7004

Doug Holland: Scott Wylie, Microsoft's New Zealand Director of Development and Platform Strategy, wrote today on his blog about his experience installing a pre-beta build of Windows 7 on his home laptop.

It is interesting to note that the pre-beta build of Windows 7 installed on his home laptop seems to be build 7004, which if the term "pre-beta" is accurate would indicate that Windows 7 beta one will be some build number higher than 7004. On the blogosphere the general consensus has been that beta one would be build 7000.0.081212-1400 which the following screen shot from Scott's laptop could indicate is inaccurate.

As we reported earlier today, Microsoft would offer both Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional at a pre-order discount price of $49.99 and $99.99 respectively starting June 26th and going through July 11 while supplies last. But it looks like you don't have to wait any longer, the Microsoft Store is now taking Windows 7 pre-orders at the discounted prices. Users can either pre-order Windows 7 as a download, a download plus a disc, or just a disc. People are reporting that their Windows Live ID's aren't being accepted if they try to log in, but if they create a new account with their e-mail address the order does go through.

Windows 7 pre-beta build is 6801

Microsoft announced the availability of a critical security patch yesterday affecting a variety of Windows operating systems.

Interestingly, the Windows 7 pre-beta build, which will be available to developers next Tuesday, also contains the bug. Microsoft stated "Customers running Windows 7 Pre-Beta are encouraged to download and apply the update to their systems. On Windows 7 Pre-Beta systems, the vulnerable code path is only accessible to authenticated users. This vulnerability is not liable to be triggered if the attacker is not authenticated, and therefore would be rated Important."

In a support article Microsoft details some Windows 7 Pre-Beta file information notes. The build string on the notes is 6.1.6801.4106, the same build string that has been screenshotted recently.

It is believed that the 6801 build is a milestone 3 (M3) build released to select customers and partners over the last few months.

Microsoft will be releasing the build to attendees at their professional developers conference next Tuesday.

PINNED: Vista Pre-RC1 Released To Public

Not part ot the managed beta? Just itching to see what's happened to Vista since Beta 2? Good news for you then, Vista Pre-RC1 has just been released to the public as a CPP (Customer Preview Program)

Build 5536, which was just released on Connect to participants for the Managed Beta Program, is now available as a public download.

Just for a reminder the build is just over 2.5GB and is only available in 32-bit. It has been confirmed that a 64-bit build will not be released.

The build can be downloaded either through your browser or using the Akamai Download Manager provided by Microsoft.

Hurry up though, because it is limited to 100,000 downloads! And only those with valid Beta 2 keys will be able to install this after downloading due to the fact that no new keys have been provided.

Thanks to "El'' Buga for the heads up.

iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 and iTunes 8.2 pre-release 2 available

The development of iPhone OS 3.0 has been progressing nicely, and approximately a week after beta 4 was released, Apple has churned out a new beta, along with a new version of iTunes 8.2 pre-release. Gizmodo is reporting a few changes in this new beta, despite initial reports that there were only bug fixes. First and foremost, it is being reported that MMS is no longer available, and the methods used to enable it are now prevented. To add to this, apparently YouTube is now improved, in that it will stream a higher quality video to users on 3G, the same video that was initially reserved for those on WiFi.

Bright future ahead for Windows 7 and netbooks

Craig Marcho, a support engineer with the Performance Team of Microsoft has blogged his recent experiences with Windows 7 on netbook. A pre-beta build of Windows 7 loaded on a netbook helped him to run Microsoft Outlook 2007, a number of internal applications, and IE 8 without any issues. Though Craig hasn't mentioned which version he installed, since it is a pre-beta build of Windows 7, I think we can assume it to be Windows 7 Ultimate.

Windows Vista RC1 Download Page Discovered

Only hours after Microsoft released Windows Vista build 5536 to the public, their RC1 download page has been discovered. The RC1 build, which was, according to Paul Thurrott, finalized yesterday, is most likely not there yet, and since the download ISO is approximately 3.12 GB, it appears to be the Beta 2 version.

The page is about the same as the pre-RC1 download page but removes the references to the 100000 copies limit, and, of course, replaces the pre-RC1 terms for RC1.

Microsoft is expected to make Windows Vista's first Release Candidate available broadly in early september, and is already preparing it, just after releasing its preview build.

Thanks to Nem for the heads up!

Microsoft Early Adopters Programs - What's in it?

Many are familiar with the Microsoft Beta programs wherein users get access to pre-release products, such as Windows 7. But very little know the different programs Microsoft adopts in testing these pre-release products. Through Microsoft Early Adopters Programs(EAP), Microsoft connects with various customers and users, giving them access to their pre-release products and testing them. The EAP consists of three stages: Technical Adoption Program(TAP) Ascend - Beta 1 Releases Touchdown - Beta 2 Releases Image Courtesy:MSDN Technical Adoption Program(TAP) The TAP is available to very limited and select customers/partners by invitation only. The number of participants in the TAP would be very less and work closely with the Microsoft employees. They have access to almost every pre-release product.

Win7 Beta Download Date Extended

After a rough start with distributing the beta, Microsoft must feel guilty. They have extended the time available for public testers to download and obtain keys for the beta.

All the way up to February 10, downloads and keys will be available for public download. After that date, if you have the download, keys will still be available.

This cutoff date does not include MSDN and Technet subscribers; the beta along with the keys will be available throughout the entire testing phase.

The expiration date for the beta is August 1, 2009 with an RC release to selected testers scheduled for before that date.

If you thought you missed out, but still want to get your hands on the beta, now's the time to do it!
