Intel to take 'Averill' to market as Centrino-like platform

Intel will next year launch its third branded PC platform, after Centrino and Viiv, this time pitched at corporate desktops.

As yet there's no word on the platform's go-to-market brandname, but it will almost certainly be based on Intel's 'Averill' platform. Averill was announced at the chip giant's Developer Forum in March this year for availability in 2006.

Averill is based on Intel's upcoming 'Broadwater' chipset, which will ship primarily as the 965 family, but also as the 946 and 963 product lines, it is believed. The platform also takes in Intel's next-generation Gigabit Ethernet controller, 'Nineveh', and its 65nm dual- and single-core Pentium D and Pentium 4 6xx processors.

Overview of Windows Server 2008 in the Enterprise

Amit Pawar: By now you have either heard or read something somewhere that Microsoft is about to release a new Serve operating System. The new server operating system is Windows Server 2008, slated for world wide release on February 27 2007. I have now been working with and presenting on Windows Server 2008 for the past one year and the first thing I talk to customers about is why this is a significant release of Window Server Platform, and the top reasons for why they should consider Windows Server 2008 as a important part of their IT Infrastructure platform.

The capabilities the new version of Windows Server brings to an IT infrastructure is a strategic asset and the critical foundation upon which software can deliver services and user applications that a business needs in order to operate effectively and succeed. Windows Server 2008 enables greater business success by providing a platform that supports mission critical solutions and applications, making them available to your organization when it needs them. Windows Server 2008 is the platform on which our customers can build their business on.

Microsoft add cheaper server platform to range

According to a press release, Microsoft has announced a version of Windows designed for small businesses, named Windows Server 2008 Foundation. The low-cost server option is based on Windows Server 2008, but with reduced functionality. One example of this is the maximum number of licensed users, which has been reduced to a considerably smaller 15. However, for new or small businesses, the entry-level alternative to expensive server options may prove popular. According to the Windows Server 2008 Foundation website, the operating system will not be available through a retail edition, rather, only available as an OEM option, for servers with it preinstalled, which are likely to be low cost ones.

Is Microsoft/Yahoo about Windows' server platform failure?

Before my whiney enemies all get up in arms about yours truly once more beating up on Microsoft, I'd like to point out that the idea of Microsoft buying Yahoo being a tacit admission that Windows can't cut the mustard as a top Internet server platform didn't originate with me. No, the credit, or blame if you prefer, goes to Marcelo Carvalho, an IT manager in San Francisco and Damien Hocking, a Linux-Watch reader who brought Carvalho's thoughts to my attention.

Carvalho, in a talkback on CNN/Money wrote, "I do not know if anybody … has understood the layer beneath a Microsoft Corp. -Yahoo Inc. deal." Caravalho continued, "Microsoft runs on the Windows platform and it has proved inadequate to run big Internet companies. There is not one big Internet company—and I mean "BIG" like Google Inc. , Yahoo, Amazon.com Inc. , eBay Inc. and such—that runs on Windows besides Microsoft. Its software platform has been a disaster supporting its search engine, email and other free services."

Zend PHP to run on Windows Server 2008

PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) tools company Zend Technologies is announcing this week that its Zend Core product will run on the Windows Server 2008 platform, providing parity between Windows Server and Linux in running PHP. Zend Core is Zend's certified PHP distribution; version 2.5 is certified for Windows Server 2008. "The certification means that customers who choose to use it on Windows Server 2008 know that it will work as it should," said Andi Gutmans, CTO and co-founder at Zend.

Microsoft and Zend have been collaborating to enable PHP applications to run on Windows. Microsoft has a feature called FastCGI intended to enable PHP to run reliably on Microsoft's platform, said Gutmans. Users also need Microsoft Internet Information Server to run PHP on Windows, he said.

"Now that Zend and Microsoft delivered the technology, we're going to be working with customers on adoption. We're also going to be targeting some of the hosting companies," to entice them to use the product, said Gutmans. All Zend products are to support Windows Server by the end of the year, he said.

Microsoft Partners Eagerly Awaiting Windows Home Server

Microsoft's partners are chomping at the bit to get their hands on Windows Home Server, but some feel it's going to make its biggest initial splash with tech-savvy users.

Due to launch this fall, Windows Home Server connects multiple PCs in the same household, and stores, manages, backs up and protects digital audio, video and photos.

In addition to centralized storage and backup, Windows Home Server also lets users access their digital content remotely, and is built on the secure platform of Windows Server 2003, says Joel Sider, senior product manager in the Windows Home Server group at Microsoft.

Although Windows Home Server is designed to be easy to install and use, the software fits well into the toolbox of home integrators, who can wrap it into a smart home solution along with home automation and networking technologies, Sider noted...

Microsoft changes Window Server Datacentre licensing

Microsoft has changed the licensing of its Windows Server Datacentre operating system, allowing users buying new servers licensed with the OS to run an unlimited number of virtualised Windows Server instances.

Microsoft said that unlimited virtualisation rights would significantly extend the savings customers gain through server consolidation on the Windows Server platform.

"Together, Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter Edition and Virtual Server 2005 R2 are an ideal, cost-effective platform for scale out' virtualization," it said.

By licensing a server's processors with Windows Server Datacenter Edition, users would be able to run Windows Server Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, Datacenter Edition or a mix of the three editions without having to track the number of virtual machines or pay for additional Windows Server licences.

Cut to the Web Server Core: Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008, due for its official launch today, is a major upgrade for Microsoft's server platform, the first for around five years. Requiring a graphical user interface (GUI) on a server operating system always seemed odd, even back in 1993 when Microsoft released Windows NT 3.1.

It has taken Microsoft until now to begin fixing the problem. Server 2008 comes with an installation option called Server Core, and although it is not quite GUI-free (Notepad and Regedit still run), it is command-line driven and lacks most of the baggage that previously came as standard. The snag with Server Core is that it is incomplete.

Whats next for Windows Server

With Microsoft having just released to manufacturing SQL Server 2008 the last unshipped piece of its updated application platform it’s time to look ahead as to what’s next for Windows Server.

In the very near term, Windows Essential Business Server (Centro) and Windows Small Business Server 2008 (Cougar) are due to ship this fall. Microsoft has said both products will be available by November 12. Both families are based on the Windows Server 2008 code base, and given that SQL Server 2008 finally hit RTM, are likely to include the latest version of Microsoft’s database, rather than SQL Server 2005 (which was the contingency plan if the SQL Server team didn’t manage to RTM soon enough).

Next up is Windows Server 2008 Release 2 (R2), a minor Windows Server update. (The Windows Server team has been delivering a new release of Windows Server just about every two years, alternating between major and more minor, R2, releases.)

Microsofts open source chief takes on Windows server marketing

The leader of Microsofts integration efforts around open source software and its proprietary technologies is expanding his role by adding the title "general manager of Windows server marketing," further indication that Microsoft plans to crank up the volume on its Windows/Linux story.

Bill Hilf, who is the director of Microsofts Open Source Lab, and whose former title was general manger of platform strategy, added his new responsibilities in the past month, according to a Microsoft spokesman. Hilfs new title is general manager of Windows server marketing and platform strategy. Hilf is not eliminating any of the current responsibilities under his former title, which include coordinating projects across Microsoft platforms and long-term strategic planning in the server and tools division.

This expanded role is a natural evolution of the work Bill has led at Microsoft over the past four years working together with Microsoft technology-development teams and the open source community to build interoperable solutions on top of the Windows Platform, and continuing the discussion around Linux and Windows, a company representative said.
