VMware benchmark tool raises fairness questions

VMware is making a free benchmarking tool available to IT professionals today to evaluate the performance of virtualisation technology in their datacentres. Meanwhile, it seeks to assure competitors that the benchmarking standards will be fair to all of them.

VMmark is available for a free download and can be used to determine how well virtualisation software works with any of six typical datacentre workloads: file server, e-mail server, web server, a stand-by server, an online transaction processing (OLTP) database and a Java order entry system. VMmark runs on either Linux or Windows.

VMware shared a prototype of VMmark in October 2006 with members of the Standard Performance Evaluation (SPEC), an industry group that establishes performance benchmarks so customers can evaluate products. At that time, SPEC had just formed a working group to develop benchmarks for virtualisation software. It is still working on those benchmarks...

Troubleshooting tool for Java offered

Sun on Tuesday announced availability of Java VisualVM, an open-source GUI tool for troubleshooting and profiling Java applications. Users can view detailed information about Java applications while they are running on a JVM (Java Virtual Machine). Billed as an all-in-one troubleshooting tool, VisualVM integrates several command line JDK (Java Development Kit) tools and profiling capabilities. It enhances monitoring and performance analysis, according to Sun.

"After eight months of frantic development since VisualVM Preview 1 was released, I'm happy to announce the general availability of JDK 6 Update 7 Java VisualVM and VisualVM 1.0," said Luis-Miguel Alventosa, a Sun senior software engineer, in a blog. Offered as part of Java Platform, Standard Edition (SE) Update 7, Java VisualVM provides a visual diagnostic tool for development and production environments. It includes such technologies as jvmstat, which provides lightweight performance and configuration instrumentation to the HotSpot JVM, as well as Java Management Extensions and the NetBeans profiler.

New data: 1 in 3 business PCs drop Vista for Windows XP

When Microsoft stopped selling new licenses to Windows XP on June 30, it gave users and PC makers a "downgrade" loophole so that those who wanted XP could still get it, even though they still had to buy a Vista license.

According to data from the exo.performance.network, 35 percent of Vista-equipped PCs have been downgraded to Windows XP. "That's way out of proportion for even the dramatically unpopular Windows Vista," says
Randall C. Kennedy, an InfoWorld contributing editor, whose company Devil Mountain Software developed the Windows Sentinel
tool and analyzes the exo.performance.network data. (More than 3,000 PCs are monitored worldwide using the tool, in both the
free InfoWorld Windows Sentinel version and in the more extensive version provided to Devil Mountain clients.)

Microsoft: Another Vista Reliability & Performance Update

Vista’s performance is one of those topics that won’t be exhausted until Windows Seven hits RTM. It all comes down to trade-offs. Ever since the features of Vista were finalized, Microsoft tried to tip the scale the other way by focusing on performance, with the obvious limitation of not disabling any services. Updates regarding performance and stability are numerous, but most have not hit Windows Update as they are not quite ready (preview releases). The Windows Serviceability Team wants feedback on one such update, available for download at the Microsoft Download Center, before its expected release on Windows Update in January.

Microsoft: Sorry we used GPLv2 code illegally

Microsoft tonight issued an update on the reports that the company used open source code in their Windows 7 USB/DVD tool, illegally. Neowin originally reported earlier this week that Microsoft had pulled the tool after complains by Rafael Rivera over some of the content of the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. Microsoft issued the following statement regarding the reports: After looking at the code in question, we are now able to confirm this was indeed the case, although it was not intentional on our part. While we had contracted with a third party to create the tool, we share responsibility as we did not catch it as part of our code review process.
