As I said in yesterday’s introduction, my job as an engineer on the Windows Vista team is to improve performance. I wanted to look at a study that measure a key area that we focused on for Windows Vista – consistent responsiveness during the times that matter most to users (when starting up their machine, after being idle, and when you are under the gun running tons of apps, etc.).

FlashFX Pro

08.08.2007WinXP SP3 Yields Performance Gains Over Vista SP1 Again
exo.blog has at
the request of their members re-run
the
original OfficeBench test, this time with 2GB of RAM in the test system. Unfortunately the outcome is unchanged bar a 4% improvement on the
previous score. One can argue that Windows XP system requirements are quite a bit lower than its successor, and thats probably got a lot to do with
it. This, coupled with claims that Vista SP1
will
not improve on performance but will in fact be all about stability and reliability instead, doesn't offer much hope for those people on older
systems.
Make of it what you will, I personally don't have performance issues at all. I use Vista with 2GB of RAM and I have a Sandisk
2GB memory stick that is used for the "Ready Boost" feature, maybe they should re-run the test with that scenario.

20.02.2009Informal Windows Vista SP1 vs XP SP2 Performance Tests
Mikael at the Futuremark Forums ran a few benchmarks of Windows Vista SP1 (presumably the latest RC Refresh) vs. XP SP2 with some surprising results.
It seems that having 8GB RAM with SuperFetch enabled doesn't hurt...
I just reinstalled Vista Home Premium 64-bit and thought
I'd run some tests. These are just a bunch of quick benches I did to satisfy my own curiosity, but I thought I'd share them with you guys. The test
config is as follows:
Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.2GHz (8*400)
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3
8GB DDR2-800 4-5-4-15
GeForce 8800GT 512MB (stock)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB <--- Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1
Samsung SpinPoint T166 320GB
<--- Windows XP Professional SP2
Some excerpts from the conclusion:
- The general usage tests are either
faster or equal to XP. However, Vista is on the slower drive (the WD), so it only makes the results even more impressive.
- Crysis was almost
certainly not cached into RAM during the test, but still loaded faster than in XP.
- The horrendous file copy performance has been fixed.
Performance is definitely higher than in XP. Also gone is the sometimes irritatingly long file delete times. File deletion seems instantaneous now,
just like it's always been in XP.
- Crysis: Performance is down 5-8% when looking at DX9 32/64-bit benches and DX10 is even worse off. The CPU
test is also curious with a WinXP performance lead of 15%! This was definitely unexpected and something that would be interesting to research further.
- Loading the image for the Photoshop test was about twice as fast in Vista compared to XP and it was the first time that file was loaded so it
couldn't have been cached.
- Gaming performance is still a let-down and it seems we'll have to live with it.
- SuperFetch has a very
large impact on program load times.

21.12.2005Windows Server 2008 Interop and Performance Benchmark
Steven Martin: <...> One of folks on my team who is making heroes happen is Greg Leake, who is a technical marketing director. In his own words,
Gregs purpose is to śimprove the lives of developers.ť To do this, he has created a lab, and spends time on interoperability testing for Web Services
as well as performance testing. No matter the time of day or night, its likely that you will find Greg in his lab, which means he probably also holds
the record for most cups of coffee in one day.
Once again Greg jumped in the ring to find out just how far we could push the perf
boundaries for Windows Server and .NET against other publicly available apps like IBMs J2EE StockTrader perf application.
My
favorite findings:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with .NET Framework 3.5 delivers 117% better throughput than IBM WebSphere 6.1 on
Red Hat Linux for the Web Application Server test using the IBM-designed Trade 6.1 benchmark as well as delivers 93% better throughput for the remote
services test.
- On the Sun Microsystems WSTest Web Services benchmark, .NET StockTrader demonstrates 94% better throughput on Windows
Server on processing Web Service requests and 86% better throughput performance for the EchoStruct operation.

27.02.2008IE8 loads pages faster, but not fast enough, in Microsoft test recreation
Performance needs to be something the user feels . That's the explanation we hear from companies that have had difficulty of late demonstrating
raw performance by the numbers (AMD comes readily to mind). Numbers may tell you a certain story, Microsoft's marketing team proclaims, but if the
user doesn't perceive the speed increase, it may as well not be there...

18.04.2007Gaming Performance: Windows Vista SP1 vs. XP SP3
Even as Microsoft tries to shove Windows Vista down the collective and unwilling throat of computer users worldwide, the company is still perfecting
the well-aged and well-loved Windows XP. The latter of the two operating systems just received its third (and evidently last) service pack.
<...> Of course, with the release of a new service pack comes a huge, pressing question: How does it compare to Windows Vista and its own
recent update, Service Pack 1, in the game performance department? Vista, of course, has been plagued by criticism that games run on it don't perform
as well as they do in Windows XP, even though most of the problems were due to early graphics drivers and have gradually been worked out.
Come with us as we install XP SP3 and take it for a test drive, and more importantly compare it to Vista SP1 with a batch of performance
tests. Though DirectX 10 is Vista-only, many a gamer has sworn not to upgrade; will XP SP3 cement their decision, or has Vista and its drivers matured
enough to change a few minds?

GeForce 9600M GT video card. Snow Leopard was installed on a stock 320GB hard drive (Hitachi model HTS543232L9SA0), while Windows 7 64-bit was

17.10.2009Microsoft: Another Vista Reliability & Performance Update
Vista’s performance is one of those topics that won’t be exhausted until Windows Seven hits RTM. It all comes down to trade-offs. Ever
since the features of Vista were finalized, Microsoft tried to tip the scale the other way by focusing on performance, with the obvious limitation of
not disabling any services. Updates regarding performance and stability are numerous, but most have not hit Windows Update as they are not quite ready

its expected release on Windows Update in January.
