Windows Vista Beta 1 vs. Mac OS X "Tiger

From Paul Thurrotte's SuperSite:

In part one of my comparison of Windows Vista Beta 1 and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," I looked at three key aspects of each system: Look and feel, desktop search, and data visualization and organization. For the most part, OS X came out well ahead of Windows Vista, as you'd expect, since it's a polished finished product. Vista, meanwhile, is all knees and elbows, an awkward teenager on its way to maturity.

. Microsoft will iron out the details, I'm sure, but the end result will likely not change much. Specifically, OS X will always be elegant, and Windows will almost certainly lag behind in the fit and finish department. The only questions are how much Vista will improve when compared to previous Windows versions, and whether it will be enough to keep customers from moving to OS X.

Snow Leopard to bring a new 'marble' appearance?

Apple has always said that the new version of OS X dubbed "Snow Leopard" would be about performance gains and not new visuals. With that in mind it has been circulating the web in resounding fashion that Apple will release a new theme for OS X when the product is launched. A mockup (below) gives a possible rendering of what the new theme may look like. There is not much else to go on but when a story gets this big it generally means there is some credibility behind the source. Keep your eyes peeled as it is expected that this theme will be unveiled anytime between now and the upcoming WWDC.

Official theme support now integrated in Google Chrome 3.0

The latest developer build of Chrome now includes an official option to install themes into Google Chrome. It was reported earlier this week by Neowin that Google is preparing to launch a theme gallery. It looks like this has happened with the release of build 3.0.195.6. The option is offered under "Personal Stuff" and has the option to "Get Themes". Pressing the button redirects you to a webpage, that shows a whole array of new themes for Chrome. Applying the theme is as simple as pressing the "Apply Theme" button below the chosen theme, and a ".crx" file is downloaded. A restart of Chrome is not required to apply the theme.

The team over at Bing wanted to show off their support for the launch of Windows 7, by putting together the top images on Bing in June, July and August into a Windows 7 theme pack. The 20 very stunning photos are available for free, directly from Microsoft's Personalization Gallery. Microsoft's Bing team managed to group these images to help show off some of the Windows 7 features, with the personalization gallery feature. The dynamic background theme packs interchange every ten seconds to one day (default 30 min), depending on user's preferences.

Snow Leopard: New Marble Interface?

With every release of OS X, like most operating systems, interface changes are constantly being made. Snow Leopard, Apple's upcoming operating system, is yet to see any major UI changes in the currently available builds. However, a source has revealed a new theme that may be underway.

Recently leaked information states that Snow Leopard will use the Marble theme instead of Aqua. While not much is known about the new theme, Marble is expected to consist of a flattened Aqua look and pick up some elements from iTunes and iPhoto, unifying the style across the operating system.

Snow Leopard is expected to be released in this quarter.

New Windows Embedded build brings new theme

User called marxo found a new Windows XP MCE-like theme in the latest CTP of Windows Embedded:

This style can be found in the Windows Embedded Standard CTP Refresh. It's called "Embedded" and, along with the wallpaper, gets copied into the image if the Windows XP UI component is added. As it's digitally signed it works with any XP/Server 2003 install. The archive I uploaded below contains the Embedded folder and the Embedded.theme to be copied to %systemroot%resourcesthemes and the wallpaper in its original format and size.

Google preparing to launch theme gallery for Chrome

Last week, information was spread that Google planned to implement proper theme support within their Chrome browser. Just recently, people have discovered, in the developer builds of the browser, that the company has built in the theme support already. It was unclear how they'd plan to display said themes, though many suspected the obvious choice of an online gallery; now, however, TechCrunch is reporting that this has been all but confirmed, with several themes already having been discovered. TechCrunch states that the themes will be available at this link, which has obviously yet to go online, but you can already preview it if you have the very latest build of the Chrome browser.

Windows Server 2008 will be Microsoft's last 32-Bit OS

During a speech this morning, Bill Laing, general manager of the Windows Server division, reiterated that, after 2008, Microsoft would only produce 64-bit operating systems. Windows Server 2008 will be Microsoft's last 32-bit OS.

Laing spoke during the second day of Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference.

The future has been an ongoing theme among the WinHEC keynotes. In talking about the future, Microsoft is telling its customers and hardware, software and channel partners where it will take the technology in the 2009-2010 release cycle—and somewhat in the meantime.

The move to 64-bit has been much shakier than from 16-bit to 32-bit. The transition is slowest on the desktop, where driver and application support is an impediment. On the server, Microsoft offers mixed 32-bit and 64-bit products, with mixed acceptance. But Laing made clear that many new Microsoft server products would only be 64-bit...

Royale Noir: secret XP theme uncovered

Sometime after the launch of XP, somewhere in Redmond, someone on the Microsoft design team was in the progress of developing something for Media Center. It was believed to be too powerful for public consumption and forever archived in the servers at 1 Microsoft Way.

Devoted Channel9 member W3bbo spotted an interesting theme on one of the people_ready television commercials airing in the States. After some dedicated searching, he finally uncovered this mystery XP theme by Microsoft. W3bbo writes,

"D uring Royales development (the XP Media Center theme), the graphic artists also produced a black version of the skin, sans the overused glass effect. The result is an aesthetic black skin named Royale Noir, it even works with Office 2003.

Since the skin was never released (or reached final adjustments) there are a few issues with it: some of the colors dont meet the overall feel (theyre too purple-ish compared to the greys of the bitmaps) and the inactive titlebars are a little too dark.

Microsoft airs first Windows 7 TV advert

Microsoft aired its first Windows 7 commercial last night at the 2009 company meeting and across TV stations in the US. Microsoft chose Europe's final countdown as the theme tune for the advert and also included Kylie from an earlier Windows ad. The music choice could be unintentional or highly ironic but it shows the company is excited about the countdown to the Windows 7 launch. The ad doesn't focus on any specific Windows 7 features but highlights some select quotes from the good press surrounding the latest OS. Kylie is seen creating a a Windows Live Movie Maker show from the quotes. Check out the video below:
