28.06.2006Microsoft: Malware can disable UAC in Windows 7 "by design"
A month has barely passed since the public beta debut of Windows 7 and we have our first horror story. UAC (user account control) was the major gripe
with Windows Vista which annoyed most tech savvy users and confused ordinary consumers. Microsoft has changed the behavior in Windows 7, lowering the
requirement for user interaction when changing system settings. The apparent downside to this is, according to reports, the way Microsoft has changed
the behavior makes it extremely easy for malware authors to write code to disable UAC without user intervention.

30.01.2009Third MS Word Code Execution Exploit Posted
Exploit code for a third,
unpatched vulnerability in
Microsoft Word has been posted
on the Internet, adding to the
software maker's struggles to
keep up with gaping holes in
its popular word processing
program.
The
attack code contains sample
Word documents that have been
rigged to launch code
execution exploits when the
file is opened.
Microsoft has not yet
publicly acknowledged the
vulnerability, but the United
States Computer Emergency
Readiness Team issued an alert
to warn that Word documents
can be manipulated to trigger
code execution of
denial-of-service attacks.
"Data used by
Microsoft Word to construct a
destination address for a
memory copy routine is
embedded within a Word
document itself. If an
attacker constructs a Word
document with a specially
crafted value used to build
this destination address, then
that attacker may be able to
overwrite arbitrary memory,"
the US-CERT warned.
An attacker could
trigger the vulnerability by
convincing a user to open a
rigged Word document. Because
exploit code is publicly
available, the risk of a
widespread attack is
heightened.

11.08.2009Disable Windows Server 2003 SP2 Scalable Networking Pack features
Michael Platts: As you may know, Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 included the
Scalable Networking Pack (or SNP) which allowed for increased performance in many situations by allowing some TCP functionality
to be handled by the network driver and network adapter instead of the Windows TCP/IP stack itself. This functionality was enabled by default in
Service Pack 2.
There have been some problems seen in some environments where Windows Server 2003 SP2 has been deployed on
systems that support the SNP features. Issues like this have been discussed in several previously published Knowledge Base articles.
There is now a new update available that will turn off the Scalable Networking Pack features on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2
systems. The article lists a number of symptoms that have been seen when Windows Server 2003 SNP is enabled and links to download the update for
x86, x64, and Itanium-based systems:
An update to turn off
default SNP features is available for Windows Server 2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computers winbeta.org -
14.03.2008Lenovo lets you disable your laptop with a text message
In the next couple months Lenovo will be rolling out a BIOS update for its Montevina laptop users which enables remote shutdown and subsequent

"Self-Destruct" to a long, patronizing multi-part message about the thieving youth of today. Constant Secure Remote Disable, as it's called,
isn't being touted as a first line of defense.

05.02.2008Live Mesh now Open to All
Well, you no longer need to have an invitation to sign up for Live Mesh:
"Microsoft has opened up its Live Mesh service to anyone who
has (or signs up for) a Windows Live ID. The service, announced in April, lets people share data among multiple Windows computers, as well as over the
Web.
The vision for Live Mesh is broader--envisioning people sharing data among Macs, PCs, and various devices, as well as opening up the
possibility for desktop applications to add online components, and Web apps to add offline components. For now, though, it's largely about file sync.
Microsoft is expected to add more features by its Professional Developer Conference in October.
In any case, Microsoft had
been limiting Live Mesh sign-ups to those with an invitation, but now it's open to anyone who wants to see it in its early stages."

17.07.2009Understanding Windows Vista Service Hardening
Microsoft has been touting Windows Vista as the most secure Windows ever. Backing up that claim, Microsoft has included a number of new security
features in the operating system. These new features are designed to address some of the common vectors by which previous versions of Windows have
fallen to anonymous miscreants and other criminals.
One such new feature in Windows Vista is known as Windows Service Hardening.
In older versions of Windows, services did not necessarily run with the least possible privileges. In fact, Windows services often ran under accounts
with very high level of access, such as the LocalSystem account. Further, users are often not aware of the services running on their systems, and do
not realise that some services are safe to disable. Finally, services and user applications ran in the same space, which could result in inappropriate
access. As a result of services running with privileges that did not match necessity, and services running that users did not require, Windows
desktops were left more vulnerable to attack.
