JkDefrag 3.4

Free (released under the GNU General Public License) disk defragment and optimize utility for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/X64. Completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead, with two optimization strategies, and can handle floppies and USB disks/sticks. Included are a Windows version, a commandline version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use from programming languages), and versions for Windows X64. JkDefrag is based on the standard defragmentation API by Microsoft, a system library that is included in Windows 2000, 2003, XP, and Vista. All defragmenters are based on this API, including commercial defragmenters. JkDefrag is therefore very solid and there is no risk of losing data. You can stop the program at any time, it will finish the current file in the background. If your disks use NTFS then you're even safe when the computer crashes in the middle of defragging. Nevertheless, it's still a good idea to backup before defragmenting, just like with other defragmenters, because the heavy use of the harddisk may trigger a hardware fault.

Microsoft: The Advantages of using illegal software

Microsoft has committed large resources into educating people on the illegal use of software and how it harms the industry since the launch of Windows 95. But a member over at Bink.nu has spotted an error with the latest update for the Windows Genuine Advantage Tool on Dutch versions of Windows XP, it comes with a significant typo that could be taken the wrong way.

As the pic shows for our Dutch readers it says "Laat mij enkele voordelen zien van het gebruik van illegal software als ik op voltooien klik" which when translated to English reads "Shows me some advantages of using illegal software when I click Finish" The link points to the Windows Genuine Advantage site which does anything but endorse the use of illegal software, doh!

Someone's having a laugh! Granted typos happen but one as significant as this will probably prompt an immediate/within a day or two update from Microsoft to rectify the error.

Red Hat to offer whitebox Linux desktops globally

The world's largest Linux vendor Red Hat will release a pre-installed desktop version of Linux globally in September. The new Red Hat desktop targeting primarily small business users will be available on cheap whitebox Intel PCs and, according to Red Hat, will not try to be a Windows clone.

The new Linux desktop platform, called Red Hat Global Desktop, has been announced on Red Hat's site and promises that the desktop will have wide global distribution through Intel's channel of white box system builders.

The Red Hat strategy contrasts markedly with Dell's push to offer Ubuntu Linux to consumers on some of its desktop and notebook models in a limited release to the US market. Red Hat is not targeting consumers but small business users and local government agencies who want to keep the cost of hardware and software to a minimum...

Growing pains for Wikipedia

For Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, last week was a tough one. And he's going to change the ground rules for the popular anyone-can-contribute encyclopedia because of it.

First, in a Nov. 29 op-ed piece in USA Today, a former administrative assistant to Robert Kennedy lambasted the free online reference work for an article that suggested he may have been involved in the assassinations of both Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy.

Then, on Dec. 1, a new flurry of attention came when former MTV VJ and podcasting pioneer Adam Curry was accused of anonymously editing out references to other people's seminal podcasting work in an article about the hot new digital medium.

To critics of Wikipedia--which, in a spin on the open-source model, lets anyone create and edit entries--the news was further proof that the service has no accountability and no place in the world of serious information gathering. ..

In search of the Wikipedia prankster

Following my previous posted info on the Wikipedia prank...

On Sunday, the New York Times published a story naming the author of a controversial and false Wikipedia article about the longtime journalist John Seigenthaler Sr.

In the Wikipedia article, the then-anonymous author wrote that Seigenthaler, once an assistant to Robert Kennedy, may have been involved in his assassination, as well as that of his brother, President John F. Kennedy.

The article stayed on Wikipedia--the free, open-access encyclopedia--for four months before Seigenthaler finally got the service's founder, Jimmy Wales, to agree to take it down. Shortly afterward, Seigenthaler published a scathing Op-Ed piece in USA Today, attacking Wikipedia's accountability and credibility.

Microsoft: All operating systems should use Vista's UAC

Microsoft Australia has defended the company's User Account Control (UAC) system as being "misunderstood" and said it should be the type of technology that all operating systems aspire towards.

"There has been a lot of misunderstanding in the market around User Account Control (UAC). If you look at it from an architectural direction User Account Control is a great idea and strategically a direction that all operating systems and all technologies should be heading down," Peter Watson, Microsoft Australia's chief security advisor said.

UAC is a security feature introduced with Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system. The aim is to provide increased security when using Windows as a standard user by informing them when possible security breaches could be undertaken. The technology has been a source of irritation for Vista users, with Apple going as far as to make fun of UAC in a recent commercial.

As Vista and the latest edition of Office were developed with Microsoft's Secure Development Lifecycle (SDL), "the number of exploits has been extremely low", he added.

Is There Room for a Security Browser?

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign build a new browser from scratch to help keep hackers at bay.

Convinced that all modern Web browsers suffer from "fundamental design flaws" that expose users to nonstop hacker attacks, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are building a new browser from scratch, with security as the killer feature.

The project, code-named OP (for Opus Palladianum) as a tribute to the Mosaic browser, is the brainchild of Samuel King, an assistant professor in the computer science department at UIUC and a renowned security expert, who pioneered research around virtual machine rootkits while an intern at Microsoft.

MS Publishes Paper For a Modern, Secure Browser

Microsoft Research: As web sites evolved into dynamic web applications composing content from various web sites, browsers have become multi-principal operating environments with resources shared among mutually distrusting web site principals. Nevertheless, no existing browsers, including new architectures like IE 8, Google Chrome, and OP, have a multi-principal operating system construction that gives a browser-based OS the exclusive control to manage the protection of all system resources among web site principals. In this paper, we introduce Gazelle, a secure web browser constructed as a multi-principal OS. Gazelle's Browser Kernel is an operating system that exclusively manages resource protection and sharing across web site principals.

Intel Countersues Transmeta

Thanks to Hurmoth for posting this in BPN.

Here we go again. Intel is countersuing Transmeta, alleging that the chip designer infringes on seven of its patents. Intel's retaliation comes three months after Transmeta took Intel to court for allegedly violating 11 of its patents. The case is regarding energy efficiency when chips aren't in use: Intel has problems with Transmeta's Crusoe, Efficeon and Efficeon 2 brands while Transmeta is troubled with Intel's Core 2 Duo, as well as processors dating as far back the P6 line. Transmeta is one of the first companies to investigate energy-efficient chips; some of its patents date back to 1991. With the amount of suing and countersuing going on these days, one wonders whether innovation is even possible without hiring a lawyer.

Are all Linux distributions created equally?

Brian Proffitt notes something on Linux Today that won't please many in Raleigh or Redmond, but which is arguably true: Linux is Linux is Linux. There really isn't much inherent in a base Linux distribution to distinguish it from its neighbors.

I think the distributions are becoming so similar in their construction, and the differences between them so subtle, the whole notion of distribution superiority is completely moot.

Ian Murdock, founder of Debian, has been saying this for years. Lately Microsoft and Novell have tried to suggest that SUSE Linux is very different from Red Hat (in terms of interoperability with Microsoft) while Oracle has been saying the exact inverse for its Unbreakable Linux (100% compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux).

Microsoft to Submit Shared Source Licenses to OSI

In his keynote at OSCON, Microsoft General Manager of Platform Strategy Bill Hilf announced that Microsoft is submitting its shared source licenses to the Open Source Initiative. This is a huge, long-awaited move.

It will be earthshaking for both Microsoft and for the open source community if the licenses are in fact certified as open source licenses. Microsoft has been releasing a lot of software as shared source (nearly 650 projects, according to Bill). If this is suddenly certified as true open source software, it will be a lot harder to draw a bright line between Microsoft and the open source community.

Bill also announced that Microsoft has created a new top level link at microsoft.com, microsoft.co m/opensource to bring together in one place all Microsoft's open source efforts. Bill sees this as the culmination of a long process of making open source a legitimate part of Microsoft's strategy. Open source has survived Microsoft's process of "software darwinism" and is becoming an ever more important part of its thinking.
