Windows 7: Application Compatibility Testing -- International

In the previous blog post " Application Compatibility Testing for Windows 7 " we talked about the importance of Application Compatibility and work we are doing to engineer this in Windows 7. In this post we will examine the challenge that emerges as we consider the world wide audience that Windows serves.

Internet Explorer Application Compatibility

The Internet Explorer Application Compatibility article describes in detail the application compatibility events that are logged by Windows Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 7. These events are used by the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) to help customers understand their application compatibility situation by identifying which applications are compatible with Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 7 and which require further testing. This article describes the application compatibility events, when the events are triggered, and workarounds to fix the application compatibility issues.

Windows Vista Application Compatibility - Useful Links

MCS Ireland: If you're working on a Vista rollout, one of the key aspects of such a project will be application compatibility testing. This is not as complex or time-consuming as most people think - the Application Compatibility Tool can automate a lot of this, and the level of application issues found is typically a lot less than you would expect; that's certainly what we're finding in our work with customers - with one customer who had approximately 600 applications, 2 were found to be incompatible with Vista. For both of these the vendor has new versions that are Vista-supported.

Anyway, back to the topic of links...

For a very quick analysis of an application's status, check out http://www.windowsvista.com/appreadiness. This site is updated weekly, and enables you to search by product or vendor name. You should still use the ACT for a more detailed check for your own environment, but this site is a handy one if you haven't got ACT in place yet.

All our application compatibility information is now in one place. Technet now has a TechCenter for all things appcompat related, covering tools, guidance, communities etc. The link is http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/appcompat/default.aspx.

Windows 7: Application Compatibility Testing -- Overview

Steven Sinofsky: Delivering a new release of Windows includes a major effort to insure that applications continue to function as well on the new release as they have on the previous release. At the PDC we talked about some of the new areas of Windows Vista that reduced this level of compatibility, such as changes we made around the OS security model. With Windows 7 we renewed our engineering efforts to maintain compatibility. As with device testing, compatibility testing is an effort that spans the entire engineering organization, though we also have a group that is dedicated to this effort. This post was authored by a set of folks and coordinated by Grant George, the corporate vice president for testing in the Windows Experience team.

No plans to release public Vista app-compat checklist

If you were wondering when Microsoft plans to publish an official list of applications that don't work well with Windows Vista, the answer is never. When Microsoft released Windows XP Service Pack 2, the company subsequently published a list of applications that didn't work properly (or at all) with the SP2 update. But with Windows Vista, Microsoft has decided not to issue a public list.

Instead, the company is advising both business and home users with compatibility concerns to get a copy of the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT), which includes technology that will allow users to log compatibility problems and cross-check (privately, with Microsoft and other customers) compatibility results for selected applications.

Until this month, Microsoft officials had been noncommittal when asked about plans for publishing a full Vista app-compat list, like they did with Windows XP SP 2. But just over a week ago, when I asked Brad Goldberg, Microsoft's general manager for Windows client product management, about Microsoft's plans to make such a list public, I got a more definitive answer.

Vista Compatibility: What? When? Where?

Am I missing something? Microsoft is launching a Windows Vista compatibility center in beta? Seventeen months after Vista shipped everywhere? Oh, yeah, and the Windows Vista Compatibility Center is one of the big announcements from Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in Houston. Isn't this the kind of thing you do before an operating system ships? Release compatibility tools for real, not in beta?

I planned to write about what's in the beta. But I went to the Windows Vista Compatibility Center and all I got was this lousy screenshot. That sounds like a T-Shirt slogan, doesn't it? There's nothing there. Poof. Pure vaporware.

Windows 7 Compatibility Issues May Mar Enterprise Adoption

eWEEK Labs' early tests of Windows 7 RC 1 show that the operating system installs and runs quickly and efficiently; is highly polished for this stage of development; already supports a wide array of hardware; and is obviously rich with security, connectivity and usability features when compared with either Windows Vista or XP. However, Microsoft's method for dealing with application compatibility--Windows XP Mode for Windows 7, or XPM--leaves something to be desired.

Microsoft release Windows 7 application compatibility update

Following on from the Internet Explorer 8 update that Microsoft released for Windows 7 Beta a day ago, another update has been released targeting application compatibility. Judging by these two updates released, Microsoft is progressing nicely, and the most recent update targets mainly games that did not run before hand, or had to be opened via compatibility-mode. Interestingly, Microsoft didn't state which applications were targeted in this update, but it is of no doubt that users will find out soon enough. If you're currently having problems with gaming, or have had problems with it, in the Windows 7 Beta, install these updates and post in the comments to show which games now work, or still don't.

The Windows 7 Effect

First, there was the wait for Windows Vista. Then there was the wait for Windows Vista SP1. Now many pundits are claiming that enterprise users will hold off migrating to Windows Vista and wait for the release of Windows 7.

How can Microsoft counter this? By leaking information about Windows 7 of course!

Part of the problem is that Windows Vista has been dogged by high profile śissuesť relating to compatibility, speed and reliability “ things that people consider important in an operating system.
