The final pillar focuses much more on the business-oriented aspects of Windows 7 rather than the consumer additions we saw in the previous four pillars. The scenarios covered by this particular pillar are designed to make deployment and maintenance of Windows 7 easier than any prior operating system. Most of the scenarios in this pillar seem to be nothing more than enhancements of features which made their debut in Windows Vista, which is good for companies looking to minimize costs while looking to deploy an improved OS since it would mean less training for both employees and IT professionals.

Windows 7: More than a Service Pack

According Bill Veghte, Vice President of Microsoft's Windows Division, Windows 7 is a lot more than a service pack-like release. It has a lot more in store.

He clarifies it specifically in the area of compatibility. It's a "minor release" in terms of compatibility, because most software and hardware compatible with Vista will be compatible with 7.

In terms of features, it's a "Major Release". Aspects such as easier networking through the "Direct Access" feature, multi-touch capabilities, and an improved taskbar just underline some of the new features of Windows 7.

Rumors about 7 being a "minor release" may have been started or agitated by Microsoft's designation of the next Windows Server version as "Windows Server 2008 R2". R2 releases are usually very small compared to others; with the server variant of Windows being released as an R2 build, it may have sparked some confusion and/or rumors from the tech community that Windows 7 will share the same description.

However, Microsoft stresses that, despite the confusion being spread, it's easy to see that Windows 7 will be a major release, and most definitely a worthwhile upgrade for both consumers and businesses alike.

Microsoft loses appeal against EU antitrust ruling

Microsoft Corp. failed Monday in its bid to overturn a European Commission antitrust ruling against it, when the European Union's second highest court dismissed the company's appeal and ordered it to pay the bulk of the Commission's legal expenses.

The long-awaited decision by the Court of First Instance in Luxembourg supports the Commission, the European Union (EU)'s top antitrust regulator, on the two essential aspects of the case.

The Commission was right to take action to prevent Microsoft from bundling in Windows Media Player into the Windows operating system, the court concluded. It was also right to force Microsoft to reveal interoperability information to makers of server operating systems.

An order for Microsoft to pay a fine of $600 million also still stands...

Using Certificate-Monitoring Tools with Windows Server 2008

One of the main objectives of administering certificates is to achieve an advanced level of security in your enterprise. Identity and access management should be taken very seriously. In this article we will very briefly cover what CAs are and then cover the important aspects of using specific certificate-monitoring tools such as PKIView.msc and certutil.exe with Windows Server 2008. It is Important to know how certificates affect your security posture and if they are healthy or require maintenance, such as replacement. An expired certificate can show a request of a service to show that your security is weak or non-existent; many times it may even instigate an attack. It may also indicate that you have not taken care of your updates, do not have a maintenance routine, and do not get real time fault-based email or text alerts or worse. This article covers the importance of using certificates, and how to monitor them with Windows Server 2008.

An overview of Windows Search Technologies

This Microsoft white paper, Windows Search Technologies Overview for Business Customers , presents an overview of Windows Search technologies, and the immense value they bring to the enterprise, small businesses, and consumers.

Since I got over the errors I was making when I posted he re that made my searched less than optimal, I have gotten to appreciate with Windows Search and the functionality it gives me, as delivered in Windows Vista™, where it permeates all aspects of the operating system.

The fact that I do not need an external/3rd party app to perform search, and by not doing so, reduce the chances of having a data leak over external, or for that matter, internal links, is a great bonus.

Sophos: No need to Bypass PatchGuard

Ron O'Brien, Sophos' senior security analyst, commented on Friday that McAfee and Symantec's claims about a need to open up PatchGuard, Windows Vista's kernel lockdown feature, to security software makers were unneeded, and that basically the opposite would be better.

"I would say that the opposite is really true: that by not focusing on having Microsoft provide us with the means to access the kernel, and in fact using the APIs that have been provided by Microsoft, we are not experiencing any problems with PatchGuard for our latest HIPS technology, Sophos Anti-Virus, or any of the other aspects of our security offering for either 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows Vista."

That simple statement will sure bring a lot more discussion between security firms and Microsoft, who seem to have created a whole debate over this very simple and valuable feature of Windows Vista, which seems to grow bigger everyday...it sure isn't finished, though.
