04.02.2009Microsoft confirms no Windows 7 restrictions on netbooks
Microsoft announced that they have removed the netbook restrictions that previously prevented users from installing any version of Windows 7 on their
netbook. The lifted restriction means users can install Windows 7 starter on a netbook, and that the three application restriction has been removed
as per consumer's request. "OEMs and ODMs have the choice to install any version of Windows on a netbook," a Microsoft UK spokesperson said.
"
Starter is an entry version and doesn't have many of the consumer or business features. The three application limit isn't there
anymore." Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic variety only come in 32bit versions and are missing a variation of features from the higher end versions.

gaming PCs. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that HP and others are working with Google to develop netbooks starring Android. Claims that
Google would be getting into the operating systems business go back at least three years, but the current rumours could well prove to be true. Android
is well developed, some key players appear to be in place, and the Google name resonates more strongly with the public.

Microsoft charges less than $15 for each XP netbook
Recently Gartner Analysis predicted that the sales of netbooks will grow nearly 80% this year to 21 million units, while overall PC sales decline by
11.9%. Given that netbooks are leading the PC market growth, Microsoft is forced to offer Windows XP for netbooks at a discounted price to gain high
share in netbook market. Microsoft hasn't revealed its pricing for netbook licenses publicly till now, but Wall Street Journal quoting unnamed
sources reports that Microsoft is charging only less than $15 per netbook for Windows XP, less than one third of the estimated $50 to $60
it receives for PCs running Windows Vista. Microsoft usually charges $30 for the Starter Edition of Windows meant for PCs.

Apple Recommends Antivirus Software
Apple has issued a technical note about Mac antivirus software, and, for the first time, suggests that Macs need such software. The note says: "Apple
encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the
whole virus writing process more difficult." The note then goes on to mention three antivirus programs, with Intego VirusBarrier X5 listed first. It
is worth noting this, since Apple, especially in its recent "Get a Mac" ads, has always publicly tried to ignore the threat of malware to Macs, as
well as other security issues.

Microsoft has gone on record to say that the term "netbook" use should be restricted and the term "low cost small notebook PC" should be used in
its place. The reasoning for the abandonment is because Microsoft sees that netbooks are only good for surfing the web and that there is little
distinction between small cheap laptops and netbooks. The real reason for Microsoft wanting to rename the netbook type laptops is driven by its own
