Review: Razer Lycosa Mirror Special Edition

When DHL stopped outside my house this morning, the first thought that ran through my mind was "has Red alert 3 finally arrived?" I have been waiting over three weeks for a replacement copy to arrive after all. I then realised that unless EA had started distributing games on vinyl records, there was no way a box of that size could be it. Alas, it wasn't, but imagine my surprise when I realised it was the Razer Lycosa Mirror Special Edition that I had admittedly, completely forgotten about. The Razer Lycosa came in simple packaging, without any excess amounts of plastic.

Dark Messiah Might and Magic Launch Trailer

I don't normally post about trailers or movies, but since Dark Messiah Might and Magic (they dropped the of, I think?) launches tomorrow I figured why not. This trailer will absolutely get your blood pumping for the game, I know I can't wait to play it tomorrow now. Wowzers.

Right now the only mirror I can see is the Fileplanet mirror, sorry guys. I know how some of you hate Fileplanet and all. I'll look for some more mirrors during the day and add them once I find them. Feel free to add them to the comments area as well.

Just to remind you, Dark Messiah Might and Magic launches on Steam tomorrow October 25 at 10AM Eastern Time  for North America only. The rest of the world launches on Steam on October 27 at 10AM GMT.

The video runs for 2 minutes and 34 seconds, and is really stunning. Not the greatest quality mind you, especially for a 20 meg WMV file, but it works. Enjoy.

Running the numbers on Vista

Sales of boxed copies of Windows Vista continue to significantly trail those of Windows XP during its early days, according to a soon-to-be-released report.

Standalone unit sales of Vista at U.S. retail stores were down 59.7 percent compared with Windows XP, during each product's first six months on store shelves, according to NPD Group. In terms of revenue, sales are also down, but the drop has been less steep, at 41.5 percent. The findings largely mirror the sales pattern NPD saw for Vista during its first week on the market in January.

"It's just not doing well," NPD analyst Chris Swenson said of Vista's performance at retail stores, though adding that most people get their OS on new PCs, with only a minority of customers purchasing boxed copies.

Microsoft also agreed that an analysis of boxed copy sales is not representative of Vista's momentum, noting the trend of people getting a new operating system with a new PC has further accelerated with Vista.

"While we can't comment on the findings of a report we haven't seen, we continue to be on track in all segments we follow," the company said in a statement to CNET News.com. "As of this summer, more than 60 million licenses have been sold."..

Windows Update blows away competitor's uptimes

A company that measures Internet service reliability has given Microsoft the top score in a test of operating system update services.

Microsoft's Windows Update was available 100 percent of the second quarter of 2008, Pingdom said in a blog posting Friday. Apple's service was down 2 hours and 34 minutes, with 99.9 percent uptime, and Canonical's Ubuntu version of Linux was down 1 day, 5 hours, and 45 minutes, for 98.64 percent uptime.

"Microsoft wins this one hands down," Pingdom said. It noted that Ubuntu's service also is available through mirror sites, however.

The company tested the three services every five minutes.

Windows Chief Bows Out

Sitting behind a one-way mirror, a white-haired man struggles to access a shared music library within Windows Vista.

"I'm lost," he says. "I'm in trouble here."

On the other side of the glass, several Microsoft executives try to talk him through the experience. Thousands of people have gone through similar tests inside Microsoft's usability lab. But on this day, February 1, 2006, the person inside Building 28 isn't just some random beta tester. It's Windows boss Jim Allchin.

And at that time, Allchin had plenty to grouse about. Windows Vista had been in testing for many months. The company had already drastically reshaped the operating system to try to get Vista onto store shelves by the holidays, but by Microsoft's own account there were still lots of bugs. While the latest versions of Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer that Allchin put through their paces had improved since his last trip to the labs, other parts of Vista were still driving him crazy.

Microsoft Won't Sue Linux Users, Company Exec Says

Despite its claim to own 42 patents used in the creation of the Linux kernel and hundreds more embedded in other free software programs, Microsoft does not plan to take a page from The SCO Group and sue users of the open source operating system, a senior company official said Monday.

"We're not litigating. If we wanted to we would have done so years ago," said Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's VP for intellectual property and licensing, in an interview.

Instead, Microsoft wants to create more arrangements that mirror the company's deal with Linux distributor Novell. In November, the two agreed to share intellectual property and pledged not to sue each other's customers. "We created a bridge between two worlds that before were perceived to be unbridgeable," said Gutierrez. ..

Rumour: Nano iPhone to be released January

Though we receive many rumours about Apple products, this rumour comes from iDeals China that previously gave us an accurate description of the iPhone 3G almost two months before its announcement. Using tip-offs given by Chinese manufacturers, iDeals China believes that from December 20 of this year, manufacturing of approximately 60 000 'Nano iPhones' per day will begin. Apparently the new phone will be the same height as the nano iPod but wider and thicker. Surpringly, they do not believe it will have a 3G chipset but will include three sensors, a mirror screen and a camera. The lack of 3G could be explained by the reduced size of the phone not allowing for a high capacity battery.

Child porn found on an iPhone application

An iPhone application named BeautyMeter, approved by Apple, has been reported by Wired.com to contain child pornography. The application allows users to upload pictures of themselves and have them rated by other iPhone users in a rating system similar to hotornot.com. BeautyMeter demonstrates the flaws in Apple's safeguards that now allow nudity on their applications for those 18 years or older, using developer maintained servers. The image in question shows a girl from the United States, aged just 15 years old taking a picture of herself standing in the reflection of a mirror, almost completely naked. The image has been edited and censored by wired.com to prevent distribution of child pornography.

Nasa unveils Hubble's successor

The US space agency Nasa has unveiled a model of a space telescope that scientists say will be able to see to the farthest reaches of the universe.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is intended to replace the ageing Hubble telescope.

It will be larger than its predecessor, sit farther from Earth and have a giant mirror to enable it to see more.

Officials said the JWST - named after a former Nasa administrator - was on course for launch in June 2013.

The full-scale model is being displayed outside the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in the US capital, Washington DC.

It was recently shown off in Seattle at the American Astronomical Society meeting.

Another Milestone for Neowin at 7

Neowin became seven years old on October 1st. I blogged about it briefly on the 29th and said pretty much all of what I wanted to say on the day so I didn't post about it on the 1st. Today however I have reached another milestone.. From today I have lived in Holland for 16 years, Neowin is seven, still thriving and we have an important question to ask the community.

A lot of our members came here on the back of the continuing coverage we gave on Windows XP prior to its release, mainly due to the information we were getting and other websites weren't, luckily for us many of those members are still with us today that date as far back as 2001. Now a days we share a partnership with Microsoft as a Featured Community which allows us to bring you news straight from Redmond, and Microsoft has become much more open on its direction and disclosure with information on forthcoming releases and betas.

We are constantly trying to bring our community new ideas and features and our latest idea is to bring to Neowin what many other communities already excel in and Neowin lacks, our own downloads section. The software news will be changed into a complete downloads area complete with full index of categories, ratings, reviews, search options and filtering. We also plan to mirror some popular applications and offer a 5 star badge to software vendors in order to get Neowin "back on the map".

BBC in talks on Google link-up

The BBC is in advanced negotiations with Google to make programming available via a branded channel on the search giant's video-sharing site, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.

It is understood that BBC executives are keen that the deal, which involves BBC Worldwide and the BBC, is eventually expanded to include putting content on Google-owned YouTube.

BBC Worldwide is understood to be looking at commercial options for the agreement, such as a share on contextual advertising that will run alongside BBC content.

This would mirror the type of deal that YouTube has in place with US sports organisation NHL.

The BBC will use Google Video as a vehicle to raise the profile of its content by posting clips of popular programming.
