XP or Vista - Which is more at risk from Windows 7?

Its been around 30 months since Windows Vista hit the General Availability milestone, and in that time the OS has only managed to claw some 18% of the OS market share. Compare that weak market share to the aging Windows XP, which even today commands an impressive 73% market share. With Windows 7 now only a few weeks away from the General Availability milestone, its interesting to wonder what effect 7 will have on XP and Vista market share.

Windows 7 M1 build shows up on various torrent sites

It was only a matter of time..

Not too long after Microsoft had released a developer build of the Windows 7 Milestone 1 release to a select few, review and opinion pieces started to leak onto Windows enthusiast sites by OEM employees or their beneficiaries. So it's hardly surprising that now -just a few days later, the full naked DVD image has started to show up on a few torrent sites. Most have been verified as fake and removed, and while we haven't been able to verify for ourselves if indeed the milestone has been leaked to the pirating community, it sure is stirring up a lot of interest in the past 24hrs!

Apple App Store Milestone: 100,000 apps

Reaching yet another milestone, Apple's App Store has broken the 100,000 approved applications mark. According to TheNextWeb, Apple has approved 101,713 applications and games. Of course, not all of these are available immediately as many have just been accepted. The App Store currently has 93,000 released applications. This is up from a reported 65,000 in August. According to iPhonesTalk, analysts have predicted the 200,000 mark will be reached next year and by the end of 2010, there will be 250,000 applications. Some recent additions to the app store include an app from NASA which brings countdown clocks, videos and Twitter feeds to the iPhone. Reportedly, this app will even let you know when the Space Station is passing overhead!

Windows Live Mail Milestone 7 Released

Microsoft silently released a few minutes ago its long-awaited upgrade to Windows Live Mail Beta. The update had been showed last week on its Bay 101 server and was since then very liked by users.

Among other improvements, we can note obvious performance changes, the return of checkboxes, improvements to the Today page, and as usual, to the Firefox version of the client.

An official change log and other detailed information has yet to have been released by the Windows Live Mail developer team.

Windows 7 M1 Build 6574.1

Chinese site ThinkNext has once again released screenshots of another build of Windows 7 that is currently being worked on by Microsoft.

Amongst the changes are some refining with Windows Explorer and the addition of a Windows Health Center that provides alerts and monitors the systems health state. Microsoft is currently testing Windows 7 internally and is widely expected to announce further details at its PDC (professional developers conference) in October this year. The company is expected to ship Windows 7 in Q1 2010.

The build was posted without the full build string, which leads us to believe that a partner purposely violated the NDA with the Redmond based software company, and made it difficult to trace back to a specific developer lab. As quoted from the site below:

"This time it’s the 2nd release of Windows 7 Milestone 1. Version 6.1 (build 6574.1.{SECRET}). The {SECRET} here means I won’t expose detail. No, even Milestone 1 isn’t a single release. Microsoft releases multiple versions of M1 with different minor version numbers. Well, for me it is the 2nd one I’ve gotten but I’ve no idea about how many releases Microsoft did before. I’ll use Win7 M1 R2, which stands for Windows 7 Milestone 1 Release 2, to describe it in the following. Please be noted, ‘Release 2’ is my naming convention, not Microsoft’s."

Windows 7: The Anti-Vista?

Mary Jo Foley: Even with Windows Vista’s one-year anniversary launch just a week away, all that anyone in the tech-enthusiast community seems to want to talk about is Windows 7 (Except for those who are already sick of hearing about 7, as one Windows user characterized himself in a conversation I had yesterday.)

There are Windows 7 screen shots, Windows 7 videos, Windows 7-Windows Live-integration to-do lists. And of course, there is the infamous Milestone 1 (M1) Windows 7 build out there, with M2 and M3 successors due out later this year, if rumored roadmaps are to be believed.

Some pundits believe Microsoft is trying to stoke the Windows 7 fires to “build excitement” for its next Windows release. I don’t think this is the case at all. I think Microsoft wants to smother the Windows 7 flames and to dampen expectations as much as possible.

Chips pass two billion milestone

The first chip to pack more than two billion transistors has been launched by silicon giant Intel. The quad-core chip, known as Tukwila, is designed for high-end servers rather than personal computers. It operates at speeds of up to 2Ghz, the equivalent of a standard PC chip. It marks the latest milestone in chip technology; Intel released the first processor to contain more than one billion transistors in 2006. "It's not revolutionary, it's another evolutionary step," said Malcolm Penn, an analyst at Future Horizons, of Tukwila.
