Complying with data protection legal requirements in a Windows shop

When the information security staff, compliance officers and legal counsel say to get the systems in IT compliance, what should Windows administrators do?

The best way to address privacy and data protection compliance is to look at the applicable laws and find common requirements. That's a more effective way to do it than to address piecemeal IT compliance requirements one law at a time.

To start, administrators should identify common requirements within all the applicable laws, regulations, standards and contracts. They should map out the commonalities within a matrix that can then be used for easy reference to clearly see all the commonalities.

How to install the Windows Server virtualization role in Windows Server 2008 RC0

This post walks through how to install the Windows Server virtualization (WSv) role in Windows Server 2008 RC (Release Candidate) 0. As I mentioned in my previous post, WSv is a preview in other words, pre-Beta release.

If you have access of MSDN, Technet or have signed up at Microsoft Connect, you will be able to access the installation media for Windows Server 2008 (note it may take a little while for the builds to propagate). If you want to give WSv a whirl, you must have specific hardware capabilities. Your processor must be 64-bit, have XD/NX (eXecute Disable/No Execute) turned on, and support Intel VT or AMD-V. Further, the BIOS must support these features. It is recommended that even if your hardware does have these capabilities, you upgrade to the latest version of the BIOS.

Although the WSv preview is now generally available, we have a relatively limited hardware support matrix at this time. In other words, even if you have a machine which meets the hardware capabilities above, it is possible we have not tested WSv on that hardware - there always remains the possibility of a BIOS or hardware incompatibility.

Latest AACS revision defeated a week before release

Despite the best efforts of the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) Licensing Administration (AACS LA), content pirates remain one step ahead. A new volume key used by high-def films scheduled for release next week has already been cracked. The previous AACS volume key was invalidated by AACS LA after it was exposed and broadly disseminated earlier this month.

The latest beta release of SlySoft's AnyDVD HD program can http://forum.slysoft.com/showt hread.php?t=4214&page=3>appare ntly be used to rip HD DVD discs that use AACS version 3. Although these won't hit store shelves until the May 22, pirates have already successfully tested SlySoft's program with early release previews of the Matrix trilogy.

AACS LA's attempts to stifle dissemination of AACS keys and prevent hackers from compromising new keys are obviously meeting with extremely limited success. The hacker collective continues to adapt to AACS revisions and is demonstrating a capacity to assimilate new volume keys at a rate which truly reveals the futility of resistance. If keys can be compromised before HD DVDs bearing those keys are even released into the wild, one has to question the viability of the entire key revocation model...

Microsoft's greatest marketing site/time waster since minesweeper

Silverlight may be Microsoft's new media platform, but with their latest video game campaign they're not showing it with a new marketing site that runs using Adobe's Flash. It's part of a massive campaign to get people to buy the third game in the Halo series, but even if you're not a video game fanatic, or familiar with it, the site is really worth taking for a spin. It revolves (literally) around a massive diorama of some intense futuristic battle. You're given control to roam back and forth using your mouse and arrow keys, and at various points even stop where you are and move freely around in a 360 degree mode. There's also an autoplay button, that will let you sit back and just watch.

Along your way around the battlefield you'll find all sorts of things to click on, including images, text snippets, and videos. Each of them is highlighted in blue, and when clicked on, provides a download link for a related full-size desktop wallpaper or other media item.

The real draw however, is the scale of this thing. While the diorama might only be a few feet wide in real life, flying around an inch above the ground creates this really neat effect that's half Matrix, half this-is-what-it's-like-to-be-an-NFL-football-that-just-got-thrown-for-80-yards.

Intel to buy digital-media software maker Havok

Major purchase indeed...

Intel will buy Havok, a provider of software and services used by videogame creators and movie special-effects teams, the company said Friday.

Havok will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel but keep operating its business as usual, according to an Intel press release. It will add to Intel's visual computing and graphics efforts, while continuing to develop products for all computing platforms, the company said. The acquisition will help Havok grow into new market segments, Havok CEO David O'Meara said in a prepared statement. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 1998, Havok's helps game developers simulate real world physics in their games, making objects appear to move in a more realistic fashion.

The Dublin company's tools have been used on games such as "BioShock," "Halo 2" and "Half Life 2" and movies including "The Matrix," "Troy" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Founded in Dublin in 1998, the company has operations in San Francisco, Stockholm, Calcutta, Munich, Tokyo and San Antonio, Texas.

SlySoft claims to have cracked BD+, naysayers fall quiet

We haven't broken down the minutes and seconds or anything, but we're fairly certain that July 10th wasn't exactly ten years ago. Nevertheless, the so-called "impenetrable" BD+ DRM scheme has reportedly already been subverted, and it's no shock to hear that the folks behind SlySoft had a hand in it. Regrettably, there's not a lot of details beyond that just yet, but according to the outfit's CEO, the software is ready to rock and should be released before the end of 2007. Chalk (yet another) one up to the hackers.

Showdown at Big Sky -- Sandisk 32GB SSD Vs. Seagate 160GB 7200RPM HD

After the overwhelming response to my first Solid State Drive (SSD) review listed at Sandisk 32GB SSD Tested, I formed the opinion that a completely accurate real world comparison of a SSD and HDD was a necessity. Thanks to the temporary loan of the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 ST9160823AS (160GB 7200RPM) hard drive through Dell, I was able to run comparison tests.

The computer used for these tests is a Dell XPS M1330 with an Intel T7300 Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM. It's packed with all the goodies including LED display, NVidia 8400m graphics card and I have it running 64-Bit Vista Ultimate.

To start, I used two testing programs, HDTune and ATTO Disk Benchmark, to tackle all angles of storage device testing. After looking at these results for the first time, I thought it should be mentioned that my laptop runs in AHCI mode with the Intel Matrix Storage Manager update. On initially configuring my system, I learned that a system in AHCI mode with the storage manager produces far better results then a system running in ATA mode.

Panel Makers Show Off AMOLED Advances

Panel makers in the Far East are wandering around marking out territory on their latest battleground. Not content with the measly number of letters in the acronym OLED, the Koreans and the Taiwanese are bringing out the artillery over AMOLED.

Taiwanese firm Chi Mei EL Corporation (CMEL) reckoned its 25-inch AMOLED TV panel was the dog's proverbials as it showed it off proudly at the FPD International trade show in Japan. While on further shores of the Yellow Sea, at the Korea Electronics Show, Samsung bragged that its 17-inch AMOLED screen was only 12mm thick.

Not only are Active matrix (AM) OLED panels crack-model thin, they are also supposed to offer an ultra-wide viewing angle, ultra-high contrast, and ultra-fast response times. CMEL said it used low-temperature poly-silicon thin film transistor (LTPS TFT) process technology from its mates at Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) together with its own organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) to develop its 25-incher.

Samsung said its display commands a less-than-0.01ms response time at 1,600 x 1,200 resolution with 400 nits of brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio.

Flexible Electronic Paper to be Mass-Produced in 2008

Good-bye, Silicon. Hello, Polymer.

UK-based Plastic Logic was founded via Cambridge University's research labs back in 2000. The company has just secured $100 million in financing. Naturally, financial backing happens to those with potential. With more than 60 employees, the company has managed to secure more than 50 patents. Investors include but are not limited to Bank of America (US), Intel Capital (US), Morningside (Hong Kong), Siemens (Germany) and Yasuda (Japan). Plastic Logic plans to build, and have operational by 2008, the world's first large-scale factory for the production of flexible electronic paper parts. Plastic Logic's semiconducting polymer backplanes contain the circuits that drive electronic paper displays but maintain flexibility near real paper.

To actually produce the paper, the backplane must be fastened to a frontplane made with LCD, OLED, or E Ink technology. Frontplanes have always been quite flexible, but Plastic Logic managed to make the backplanes flexible as well. The backplane is an active-matrix, thin film transistor (TFT) display. Plastic Logic's innovation comes from being able to develop the displays from a solution and at a low temperature. The current prototype line creates ten displays a day but the full-scale factory, located in Dresden, Germany, is expected to spit out a million modules yearly. Assuming the electronic paper thrives, it is quite evident that Plastic Logic will go big.
