Microsoft's Not the Only One Doing Mobile Mail

The same day the beta invites started going out for Windows Live Mail Mobile, Google launched Gmail Mobile. So far, Gmail Mobile is supporting relatively few cell phones and PDAs and only those in the U.S.. But wider coverage is coming soon, Google claims. And you can get Gmail Mobile on your Blackberry, too. And speaking of Google, it's sounding like Microsoft's nemesis bested Microsoft in the contest for whose search engine would power Google search, going forward. As part of that deal, Google reportedly will invest $1 billion in AOL, in exchange for a five percent stake.

Microsoft's Web Mail Gets Overhaul

The Hotmail millions (Microsoft reports 200 million users) know and perhaps love could be replaced. For the last seven months, Microsoft has been beta testing a radically different Web mail client, one that makes Hotmail's largely standard HTML interface look like yesterday's news. Kahuna supports drag and drop, right-clicking, multi-select and, in general, a much more Outlook-like look and feel.

New Web Mail: More Polished, Powerful

Microsoft and Yahoo are poised to make Web-based e-mail more powerful than ever with updates that bring a desktop-style interface to their respective Web mail offerings. We tested betas (currently invitation-only) of Windows Live Mail and Yahoo Mail, and also looked at an open-source newcomer called Zimbra. All three apps use an increasingly popular programming technique called Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) to improve on standard Web mail and even Google's Gmail.

Microsoft tool 'snarfs' up unwanted e-mail

Microsoft Corp.'s research arm yesterday released a free tool to help users slog through e-mail messages in their inbox in the order of importance, according to one of the researchers who developed the software.

Created within Microsoft Research, the Social Network and Relationship Finder, or SNARF, is an application that uses the same database as a user's e-mail client to count the number of times users send and receive e-mails from people, said A.J. Microsoft Works on Comcast E-Mail Problem

Microsoft said Friday that some people who use its Hotmail and MSN e-mail services are not receiving e-mail sent from Comcast accounts and other Internet service providers.

The Future of Windows Live Mail Desktop

There hasn't been much news on Windows Live Mail desktop since 2006, with a minor update being released in February. With most Windows Live watchers expecting a v1 release at the beginning of the year, many are wondering what is happening to the product. Dare Obasanjo even joked at a rename to Outlook Express Live.

It seems to be that Microsoft is rethinking its mail client strategy, with the belief that two distinct free mail clients for Windows Vista (Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail desktop) is not the way to move forward.

Instead, Mail desktop will evolve to become an enhanced Windows Mail client, which when installed will replace Vista's Windows Mail. For those familiar with Mail desktop there will not be a huge change however for those using Windows Mail they will benefit from the integration of Live services.

While the name and details of the new product are unconfirmed, hopefully we should soon see a beta of Windows Live Mail for Vista.

Chrome masks as Safari to fool Windows Live Mail

According to Google's Chrome Releases blog, Chrome-users no longer need to go out of their way to make Windows Live Mail/Hotmail work. In addition to providing important security updates, Google's most recent version of Chrome--1.0.154.46--makes it easy for followers to use Windows Live Mail. For some reason, Windows Live Mail does not work properly on Chrome, unless it thinks it is some other browser, such as Apple's Safari. Previously, Chrome-users who had wanted to be able to use Windows Live Mail would have to switch the user-agent manually, but now the browser will identify itself properly as "Chrome" for most normal sites but as "Safari" for URLs ending with mail.live.com.

Windows Live Mail sign-in UI Updated

The sign-in site for Windows Live Mail has been updated to the new Live ID interface.

As Trevin stated on his blog, in order to see the new interface, you must be a Live Mail user and sign in through mail.live.com instead of hotmail.com. This sign-in site is also compatible with the Windows Live Sign-in Assistant.

Also, I just found out that @live.com e-mail addresses are coming. If you go to ideas.live.com, and scroll down to Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta, click Get Updates, and it mentions on the following page, "You'll need an MSN, MSN Hotmail, Live.com e-mail address to use this service."

Windows Live Mail Desktop Invites Sent!

At the great surprise of numerous users, Microsoft sent public invites for its Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta program a few minutes ago.

For the record, Windows Live Mail Desktop offers the following features:

- You'll also be able to read and manage your RSS and newsgroup content as easily as you get e-mail.
- Even when you're offline, you'll be able to sort and compose e-mail.
- You can get e-mail from multiple e-mail accounts
- Putting photos in your e-mail = easy
- and many more advantages, such as Active Search

The program offers the sleek new Windows Live UI, named Flare, throughout the application. It also seems to automatically add any beta-tester to the Windows Live Mail Beta program, probably because it's a prerequisite for using the application.

Mail Desktop to become Mail Center

Unsurprisingly given yesterday's announcement that the Windows Live Search client will be called Windows Live Search Center, Mail Desktop is to follow suit and become Windows Live Mail Center.

Ignoring the fact that the spelling is americanised and will doubtlessly annoy millions of non-US users, the name doesn't describe the function of the product nearly as well as those of Search Center and Safety Center, despite their blandness. Maybe keeping users unaware of the new RSS integration is a blessing in disguise though; much like Live.com some serious work needs to be done turning these products into usable rss aggregators.
