Few days ago at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.
First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. 20.09.2008Windows 7 pre-beta build: What’s inside
Microsoft isn’t going to show Windows 7 to attendees of the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles until Tuesday, October 28. But new
info about what’s part of the pre-beta build that will be provided to show-goers is beginning to trickle out.
"According to a variety of
sources, the build that will be distributed at PDC — and, a week-plus later, at the company’s Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) — will
be one of the M3 (Milestone 3) builds. Like the build that leaked in September, this will be a 6801 numbered build, sources say. But it doesn’t seem
to be the same one I saw a few weeks back. UX Evangelist blogger Stephen Chapman says it will likely be a 6801 M3 build which Microsoft finalized on
October 20."

27.10.2008Windows 7 pre-beta build is 6801
Microsoft announced the availability of a critical security patch
yesterday affecting a
variety of Windows operating systems.
Interestingly, the Windows 7 pre-beta build, which will be available to developers next Tuesday, also
contains the bug. Microsoft stated "Customers running Windows 7 Pre-Beta are encouraged to download and apply the update to their systems. On Windows
7 Pre-Beta systems, the vulnerable code path is only accessible to authenticated users. This vulnerability is not liable to be triggered if the
attacker is not authenticated, and therefore would be rated Important."
In a
support article Microsoft details some Windows 7 Pre-Beta file information notes. The build string on the notes is
6.1.6801.4106, the same build string that has been
screenshotted recently.
It is
believed that the 6801 build is a
milestone 3 (M3) build released to select customers and partners over the last few months.
Microsoft will be releasing the build to
attendees at their
professional developers conference next Tuesday.

Mary Jo Foley: Microsoft provided attendees of its Professional Developer Conference this week with a 160 GB drive full of bits and resources. The
Windows 7 M3 pre-beta build and Windows Server 2008 R2 M3 pre-beta are on the drives.
(The Windows 7 build attendees got is
the September build 6801 that leaked out a month ago. The new taskbar and
quite a bit of the other eye candy Microsoft showed off during the October 28 PDC keynote aren’t part of the pre-beta build.)

29.10.2008Microsoft admits Windows 7 torrents were inevitable
Microsoft released their
Windows 7 M3 build
6801 at PDC last week and within 24 hours copies began to appear on popular bit torrent sites worldwide.
In a recent press roundtable,
Microsoft executive Gary Schare, director of hardware ecosystem product management for the Windows client, acknowledged that the problem of bit
torrent distribution was inevitable.
"Certainly when we went into an event saying 'OK, you have to come to an event to get the
bits', you kind of know that someone is going to find a way to put that out there," Schare told
APC, though he declined to comment on any
specific legal actions Microsoft might take against downloaders: "I can't speak to what our legal team or anyone else has done."
The
M3 build, released at last weeks PDC and WinHEC this week, does not require a serial to install therefore you can download and test the build freely.
Distribution to those wishing to install Windows 7 is probably a blessing in disguise for Microsoft. The windows team pools together a lot
of data from Windows update and the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) so a broader range of feedback may assist with early issues. Many
who install Windows 7 early are technical enough to deal with any early bugs and can provide essential feedback ready for the broad beta in early
2009.
On the other hand many in the 1000 strong Windows team may argue that this creates a lot of noise and too much broad feedback. The
company may not require such broad feedback from non developers and hardware engineers for such an early build.
Microsoft has not provided
a full schedule for the beta of Windows 7 but yesterday in a keynote at Microsoft's WinHEC conference, Steven Sinofsky hinted at there being 1
beta and 1 release candidate before RTM.

M3 Sweatt: It's been a busy couple of weeks, what with reviews last week and the Engineering Excellence - Trustworthy Computing Forum this week. In
that time, I've been pinged and discussed several times the misunderstandings on Windows XP: several customers contacted me, concerned that they
would not be able to purchase computers with Windows XP after June 30th. A couple of people were even concerned that support ends for Windows XP at
the end of June. Both of these are misconceptions and not generally true, and I'd like to call out a few resources to help people understand the
options they have today and after June 30th.

Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It would appear from the posting that Microsoft is currently
readying site updates and download servers for the imminent release of the Windows 7 beta. Yesterday, German site Winfuture claimed that the beta
would be released today and this could confirm the sites claims. The download link is currently inaccessible. It's entirely possible that once
the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official
confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.

which has been pulled by Microsoft, allows end users to upgrade to Windows 7 in an easy way. Rivera states "while poking through the UDF-related
internals of the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, I had a weird feeling there was just wayyyyyyyyy too much code in there for such a simple tool.

Some pundits believe
Microsoft is
trying to stoke the Windows 7 fires to “build excitement” for its next Windows release. I don’t think this is the case at all. I
think Microsoft wants to smother the Windows 7 flames and to dampen expectations as much as possible.

can download Windows 7 RC now. Otherwise, you can download Windows 7 RC starting May 5, 2009. The message on the site also states
that everyone else will receive the RC on May 5, 2009.

18.04.2009Exclusive: Windows 7 RC download goes live
The wait is over folks, Microsoft has published the download page for the Windows 7 RC. As we noted earlier, the download was scheduled to launch
tomorrow and was to be available worldwide. Coming straight from the download page, here are Microsoft's notes for the release candidate: You
don't need to rush to get the RC. The RC will be available at least through July 2009 and we're not limiting the number of product keys, so
you have plenty of time. Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every
two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start.

Two days from now Microsoft will remove the Windows 7 Release Candidate from their website. If you want to test out Windows 7 for free, then you will
need to download this before the 20th August, 2009. Windows 7 users who are currently on the release candidate will not have to worry until March 1,
2010 and June 1, 2010 when bi-hourly shutdowns and license expiration's will begin. Alternatively, if you want to get your hands on the final
release now, Windows 7 RTM is now available to Technet Plus and MSDN subscribers.

Several months ago
there were indications
Microsoft was working on an
Office 2007 Ribbon-inspired interface for Windows 7 which at the time sounded bizarre and is still today. How it is implemented in
“Scenic” is literally stripping the Ribbon out of Office. In fact so literal Scenic’s DLLs include resources from Office 2007 Beta 2
and the existence of a “Ribbon menu” as noted below...
