20.09.2008Windows 7 pre-beta build: What’s inside
Microsoft isn’t going to show Windows 7 to attendees of the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles until Tuesday, October 28. But new
info about what’s part of the pre-beta build that will be provided to show-goers is beginning to trickle out.
"According to a variety of
sources, the build that will be distributed at PDC — and, a week-plus later, at the company’s Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) — will
be one of the M3 (Milestone 3) builds. Like the build that leaked in September, this will be a 6801 numbered build, sources say. But it doesn’t seem
to be the same one I saw a few weeks back. UX Evangelist blogger Stephen Chapman says it will likely be a 6801 M3 build which Microsoft finalized on
October 20."
Microsoft guru Mary-Jo Foley sheds some light on what we can expect in the soon to come build. Read on at the source for a

29.10.2008Windows 7 pre-beta build is 6801
Microsoft announced the availability of a critical security patch
yesterday affecting a
variety of Windows operating systems.
Interestingly, the Windows 7 pre-beta build, which will be available to developers next Tuesday, also
contains the bug. Microsoft stated "Customers running Windows 7 Pre-Beta are encouraged to download and apply the update to their systems. On Windows
7 Pre-Beta systems, the vulnerable code path is only accessible to authenticated users. This vulnerability is not liable to be triggered if the
attacker is not authenticated, and therefore would be rated Important."
In a
support article Microsoft details some Windows 7 Pre-Beta file information notes. The build string on the notes is
6.1.6801.4106, the same build string that has been
screenshotted recently.
It is
believed that the 6801 build is a
milestone 3 (M3) build released to select customers and partners over the last few months.
Microsoft will be releasing the build to
attendees at their
professional developers conference next Tuesday.

24.10.2008Microsoft admits Windows 7 torrents were inevitable
Microsoft released their
Windows 7 M3 build
6801 at PDC last week and within 24 hours copies began to appear on popular bit torrent sites worldwide.
In a recent press roundtable,
Microsoft executive Gary Schare, director of hardware ecosystem product management for the Windows client, acknowledged that the problem of bit
torrent distribution was inevitable.
"Certainly when we went into an event saying 'OK, you have to come to an event to get the
bits', you kind of know that someone is going to find a way to put that out there," Schare told
APC, though he declined to comment on any
specific legal actions Microsoft might take against downloaders: "I can't speak to what our legal team or anyone else has done."
The
M3 build, released at last weeks PDC and WinHEC this week, does not require a serial to install therefore you can download and test the build freely.
Distribution to those wishing to install Windows 7 is probably a blessing in disguise for Microsoft. The windows team pools together a lot
of data from Windows update and the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) so a broader range of feedback may assist with early issues. Many
who install Windows 7 early are technical enough to deal with any early bugs and can provide essential feedback ready for the broad beta in early
2009.
On the other hand many in the 1000 strong Windows team may argue that this creates a lot of noise and too much broad feedback. The
company may not require such broad feedback from non developers and hardware engineers for such an early build.
Microsoft has not provided
a full schedule for the beta of Windows 7 but yesterday in a keynote at Microsoft's WinHEC conference, Steven Sinofsky hinted at there being 1
beta and 1 release candidate before RTM.

06.11.2008More info on Windows XP support, downgrades from Windows Vista
M3 Sweatt: It's been a busy couple of weeks, what with reviews last week and the Engineering Excellence - Trustworthy Computing Forum this week. In
that time, I've been pinged and discussed several times the misunderstandings on Windows XP: several customers contacted me, concerned that they
would not be able to purchase computers with Windows XP after June 30th. A couple of people were even concerned that support ends for Windows XP at
the end of June. Both of these are misconceptions and not generally true, and I'd like to call out a few resources to help people understand the
options they have today and after June 30th.

06.06.2008Windows 7: The Anti-Vista?
Mary Jo Foley: Even with Windows Vista’s one-year anniversary launch just a week away, all that anyone in the tech-enthusiast community seems to
want to talk about is Windows 7 (Except for those who are already sick of hearing about 7, as one Windows user characterized himself in a conversation
I had yesterday.)
There are
Windows 7 screen
shots,
Windows 7 videos,
Windows 7-Windows Live-integration to-do lists. And of course, there is the infamous Milestone 1
(M1) Windows 7 build out there, with M2 and M3 successors due out later this year, if
rumored roadmaps are to be believed.
Some pundits believe
Microsoft is
trying to stoke the Windows 7 fires to “build excitement” for its next Windows release. I don’t think this is the case at all. I
think Microsoft wants to smother the Windows 7 flames and to dampen expectations as much as possible.

25.01.2008Windows Scenic: Windows 7s Ribbon-based UI platform
It looks like the much anticipated new user-interface platform for Windows 7 and Windows Live Wave 3 applications is being called “Windows
Scenic”, if the recently available
Windows Live
Wave 3 Movie Maker and
leaked screenshot of Windows
7’s Paint application is any indication. They are both built with one and the same UI framework.
Several months ago
there were indications
Microsoft was working on an
Office 2007 Ribbon-inspired interface for Windows 7 which at the time sounded bizarre and is still today. How it is implemented in
“Scenic” is literally stripping the Ribbon out of Office. In fact so literal Scenic’s DLLs include resources from Office 2007 Beta 2
and the existence of a “Ribbon menu” as noted below...

18.09.2008Windows 7 in 2009? Be careful what you wish for
Take it as a sign that Windows Vista failed to capture the
imagination of Windows users, or take it as a sign that sensationalism sells. Either
way, the rumor mill is heating up with claims that the successor to Windows
Vista—currently dubbed Windows 7—could be released as
early as next year, as
opposed to sometime in 2010, as currently expected.
The scuttlebutt (condensed): some users have seen
early
builds of Windows 7, including
a
poster at Neowin. Ars Technica has also seen an older build, as we told you
about
more
than a month ago. A more
recent build was reportedly described as Milestone
1.
APC Magazine claims to have
seen a roadmap which puts M2 in an April/May timeframe, and
a M3 in the
third quarter of this year. All of this points to a late 2009 release, they
say, which is indicated by this "road
map."
Arguing about whether or not Windows 7 will ship in late
2009 is pointless. No one can predict the future,
and Microsoft's own history
shows that its roadmaps and predictions are not to be trusted. A more
interesting question is:
should
Microsoft be aiming for late 2009?

25.01.2008WinHEC 2008 Kick-Off Keynote
Today was the kick-off for this year's WinHEC conference, bringing together engineers and developers from around the world.
John DeVaan
and Steven Sinofsky took the stage and talked a bit about Windows 7's improvements deep within the software, and also on the hardware side.
He quickly got to the point about the planned release cycle of Windows 7. He said that, unlike Vista, they are committed to shipping reliable
builds of 7, and this time, they will be on time.
Keep reading, and view links to the keynotes by following the "Read More"
link below...
Contrary to popular belief, the same M3 (6801) build that was given to PDC attendees was given to the lucky people
at WinHEC. Also, they have confirmed that unlike many predictions, the first public beta will not be released in December; rather, it will be released
in “early 2009.
To touch the boot time topic, they did a demonstration, showing that even in this early pre-beta build, Windows 7 boots a
few seconds faster than Vista does. Also to improve boot times, Microsoft has made an improvement in the way it loads device drivers; instead of
loading them serially, it loads them in parallel to eliminate a numerous amount of services from starting up at boot.
Trimming down the
CPU usage also meant trimming down quite a few resources. As a result of their compaction efforts, he spent a long time during the keynote
demonstrating that Windows 7 can easily and quickly run on an Asus Eee PC with only 1GB of RAM.
A powerful Operating System, incredibly
fast hardware, crippled with only an hour of battery life is not a computer user’s dream. Microsoft realizes that, and has worked very hard on
fine-tuning Win7’s kernel and tweaking the system clock, all in an effort to achieve the idle state we all long for. Making the CPU idle more often
and longer will definitely boost the life we get out of our batteries.
Aside from all of the core components of Windows that were
presented, was the ‘Device Stage’ and some major improvements in Media Center, such as touch support, the inclusion of the long-rumored “Fiji
functionality, as well as trimming the boot time of Media Center to make it a more comfortable experience.
If you’d like to watch today’s
keynote first-hand, it’s available on the WinHEC site in one of three formats:
