Few days ago at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.
First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

27.01.2008M1 Beta CTP of Office Binary Translator Project Available
The main goal of the Office Binary (doc, xls, ppt) Translator to Open XML project is to create software tools, plus guidance, showing how a document
written using the Binary Formats (doc, xls, ppt) can be translated into the Office Open XML format. As a result customers can use these tools to
migrate from the binary formats to Office Open XML Format thus enabling them to more easily access their existing content in the new world of XML. The
Translator will be available under the open source Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) license, which allows that anyone can use the mapping, submit
bugs and feedback, or contribute to the project.

25.04.2008Windows 7 M1 Build 6574.1
Chinese site ThinkNext has once again released screenshots of another build of Windows 7 that is currently being worked on by Microsoft.
Amongst the changes are some refining with Windows Explorer and the addition of a Windows Health Center that provides alerts and monitors the
systems health state. Microsoft is currently testing Windows 7 internally and is widely expected to announce further details at its PDC (professional
developers conference) in October this year. The company is expected to ship Windows 7 in Q1 2010.
The build was posted without the full
build string, which leads us to believe that a partner purposely violated the NDA with the Redmond based software company, and made it difficult to
trace back to a specific developer lab. As quoted from the site below:
"This time it’s the 2nd release of Windows 7 Milestone 1.
Version 6.1 (build 6574.1.{SECRET}). The {SECRET} here means I won’t expose detail. No, even Milestone 1 isn’t a single release. Microsoft
releases multiple versions of M1 with different minor version numbers. Well, for me it is the 2nd one I’ve gotten but I’ve no idea about
how many releases Microsoft did before. I’ll use Win7 M1 R2, which stands for Windows 7 Milestone 1 Release 2, to describe it in the following.
Please be noted, ‘Release 2’ is my naming convention, not Microsoft’s."

22.04.2008Windows 7 (Seven) M1 post-install details leaked?
I noticed over at Long Zhengs
website
that he has decided to post about the supposedly leaked post install details and analysis of Windows Seven M1 (Mile Stone 1).
“Kenipnet”, a Neowin member reported that he had been given the Alpha, otherwise known as a developer build for testing and then made a
detailed post about it which
he later
deleted. Luckily I was all over that forum thread and managed to
salvage his deleted claims from my
Firefox browser cache and repost as my own (thus preserving the post for prosperity).
I sent a private message to
“kenipnet” asking if he could backup his claims with a screenshot or other means, his response indicated that he was unsure how he could
make any evidence available to me online, so I decided to keep it with the forum thread instead of main page news.

comment essay confirming the authenticity of that review as well as revealing many other details about the current and future
state of Windows 7.
There’s a lot of detail from the design of Windows 7, to the development teams, Windows Live
integration strategies and of course the man, the legend,
Steven Sinofsky
who’s influencing the release cycles of Windows. And don’t forget Calculator, Paint and Notepad.

23.01.2008Windows 7 M1: Nothing to get excited about
JayDog @ TG Daily: I have been lucky enough to get an early peek at Microsoft's next operating system, Windows 7. But if you were expecting dramatic
visual changes and a departure from Vista, Milestone 1 truly disappoints. But then, M1 has a different purpose, it is not intended to provide eye
candy. Here's what you could expect from M1 - in the very unlikely case you'd come across the installation DVD.
winbeta.org -
05.02.2008Windows Vista successor scheduled for a H2 2009 release?
Several industry sources have confirmed to TG Daily that a very early version of Windows 7, previously code-named Blackcomb Vienna, already has been
shipped to key partners as a Milestone 1 (M1) code drop for validation purposes. A roadmap received by TG Daily indicates that the new operating
system will be introduced in the second half of 2009.
While it has generally been believed that Windows 7 was scheduled for a
2010 debut, Microsoft has revised the roadmap and apparently moved up the release date by a few months: A recently distributed roadmap of the OS lists
a release to manufacturing in H2 2009. Microsoft declined to comment on this date.
The current M1 drop is available to Microsoft
partners in English only and has shipped in x86 and x64 versions. An interesting feature that has been highlighted by Microsoft is the ability of the
M1 software to handle a heterogeneous graphics system consisting of multiple graphics cards from different vendors. A new version of the Media center
is already integrated in this software, but supports PC speakers only at this time.

M1 dogfood build review and screenshots
Looks like its open-season on Wave 3 now, with Inky over at Mess.be getting his hands on the
Wave 3 Milestone 1 installer for Windows Live Messenger. While Inky may be obsessed with version numbers and about screens, we’re more
interested in what’s going on in terms of new integration across services. Its now been 9 months since the launch of Messenger 8.5, Mail and
Photo Gallery as part of Wave 2, but as this is only a first milestone, there’ll be other internal updates before a version gets released to the
public. That said, there’s still some positive signs that the eventual Messenger v9 release is going to be good.

ws Live Wave 3 the next version of Microsoft’s Windows Live software and services is finally expected to move into broader beta testing in

Microsoft is expected to refresh all of its core Windows Live services, plus the common installer, as part of
Wave 3. There is a new version of Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Photo Gallery and more that are in the
pipeline. Microsoft has hinted that it will be revamping Windows Live Spaces, its blogging/social-networking platform, in a major way as part of the
Wave 3 release. In addition,
all of the core Windows Live services are expected to get more
profile-centric as part of the next wave.

14.08.2008Windows 7 build 6574 info leaked
Windows 7 is confirmed to still be under works, and despite the fact that Microsoft has tried to hold back the details about the next version of
Windows almost to perfection, details managed to slip through the company's closed doors.
The initial Windows 7 Milestone 1 build was
dropped at the end of 2007 and in early January 2008, but only to close partners of the company. But the development of Windows 7 has moved along
since version 6.1 Build 6519.1.x86.fre.winmain.071220-1525. From build 6519.1, Microsoft went up all the way to Version 6.1 Build 6574.1, reportedly
made available in March 2008. Although the latest build has higher digits it still stands under the category of Milestone 1.

05.05.2009Windows 7: The Anti-Vista?
Mary Jo Foley: Even with Windows Vista’s one-year anniversary launch just a week away, all that anyone in the tech-enthusiast community seems to
want to talk about is Windows 7 (Except for those who are already sick of hearing about 7, as one Windows user characterized himself in a conversation
I had yesterday.)
There are
Windows 7 screen
shots,
Windows 7 videos,
Windows 7-Windows Live-integration to-do lists. And of course, there is the infamous Milestone 1
(M1) Windows 7 build out there, with M2 and M3 successors due out later this year, if
rumored roadmaps are to be believed.
Some pundits believe
Microsoft is
trying to stoke the Windows 7 fires to “build excitement” for its next Windows release. I don’t think this is the case at all. I
think Microsoft wants to smother the Windows 7 flames and to dampen expectations as much as possible.
