analysis looking at
Microsoft's suspicious
lack of advancement in OS boot
technique.
Put
simply, Vista will still
overwrite the master boot
record with no regard for any
other boot loader that may be
present.
But
Kennedy also describes how,
with the right boot loader
configuration, you can setup a
dual-boot system that allows
you to switch between Windows
and Linux without having to
reboot either OS, using
hibernation.
His
observations open up
interesting possibilities for
Mac users too. Boot Camp would
be considerably more useful if
it didn't involve closing
all applications and fully
restarting the system each
time. If it were just a case
of sleeping one OS to switch
to the other, it'd be the
next best thing to perfect
virtualisation. Will Apple
implement this in time for
Panther?..

fashion, for some time now. But a new discussion on a Wine mailing list could refresh hope for those looking to get their Frankenstein on with Mac OS
X and Windows computing.
The discussion begins with a mailing list message called Interesting Behavior of OS X, in which Steven Edwards
describes the discovery that Leopard apparently contains an undocumented loader for Portable Executables, a type of file used in 32-bit and 64-bit
versions of Windows. More poking around revealed that Leopard's own loader tries to find Windows DLL files when attempting to load a Windows
binary.

02.12.2007Ubuntu targets 10 second boot time for 2010 release
In an email to developers of the Linux distribution Ubuntu, Canonical's Scott James Remnant explained how they hope to achieve a 10 second boot
time with Ubuntu 10.04, the version to be released in 2010, after 9.10 is released this fall. The projected speed improvements come with changes to
the kernel, such as making the X.org server, which controls the display elements in Linux, load up quicker. The boot process will divided into
sections with time budgets: two seconds for Kernal and initramfs, Plumbing (drive loader), and X.org server; and four seconds for the desktop session
and other services. "This benchmark time is to a fully logged in desktop (auto-login) with an idle CPU and Disk.

A few short years ago the browser war seemed dead and buried. After Microsoft’s Internet Explorer usurped Netscape’s Navigator in the late
1990s, it’s domination of the Internet seemed complete, over 95 percent of us using a version of IE.
Those days are gone. The guts of
Navigator were reborn in 2004 as Firefox, a browser that has been drinking more and more of IE’s milkshake ever since. Firefox now owns at least
18 percent of the market, with some estimates giving it more than a quarter. More recently, Apple has threatened to start a three-way fight, using the
software updater included with iTunes to slip its Safari browser onto PCs. While its market share is miniscule – less than one per cent among PC
users and around three per cent overall –Safari offers a PC users a credible third choice.
Meanwhile, IE 7 is groaning under the
weight of bad press, criticised for its instability and sluggish performance. Apple is trumpeting Safari 3.1 as the world’s fastest browser,
while Firefox 3 – which is now out of beta and into the Release Candidate stage – is claimed to be over twice as speedy as its
predecessor.

about the changes in the Windows 7 beta 1 license agreement. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes from ZDnet has benchmarked Windows 7 with its successors Windows

Most anyone who has been following the development of Windows 7 knows that it's currently kernel version 6.1. But all that is set to change, at
least if an obscure MSDN page is to be believed. In a page describing device installation with the Windows Driver Kit, the documentation shows
"Msft.NT.7.0" being used as a label to specify drivers only for use with Windows 7.
