14.1.2008Tracing the memory leak: Is it Firefox 3?
Yesterday, we mentioned that we've been noticing recent versions of Firefox, including 3.0.5, have exhibited the memory leak problems that used to
plague Firefox 2. We are noticing this on both Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1.
We'd also noticed that systems where the add-on Tab Mix Plus
was installed, did not appear to exhibit the same memory leak. Today, we uninstalled Tab Mix Plus (reluctantly, because we like it) from one system.
On that system, the memory use pattern has
changed, perhaps moderated, though we're not sure the leak has gone away. It now appears to be
slower than in our tests yesterday, and from time to time, something in Firefox does clean up parts of memory from time to time. In one test,
we had two Firefox windows open with seven tabs open in one of them, a dozen in the other -- a pretty full slate. Task Manager is showing us that
Firefox grabs memory in one-megabyte chunks per second, for about a minute at a time, and then leveling back out to about 300,000 KB.
So if
it's not a leak right now, at least it's a
fight, and we'll let you know what else we find...

30.01.2009Microsoft roots out Windows Home Server leak + New Build
Microsoft said late yesterday
it had identified the person
who had leaked the
still-in-beta Windows Home
Server to the Web. According
to both the company and
messages from the site where
the beta was once posted,
however, earlier reports that
the leaker was a Microsoft MVP
were incorrect.
Last week, several news
outlets ran stories about a
Microsoft investigation into a
leak of the Windows Home
Server (WHS) code to
thehotfix.net Web site. The
stories cited an e-mail sent
by Kevin Beares, the Windows
Home Server community lead at
Microsoft, to all MVPs (Most
Valuable Professionals) named
"Richard." MVP is the
Microsoft designation for a
group of developers and others
who the company believes make
significant contributions to
users; many MVPs are active in
various beta tests that
Microsoft runs.
According to the news
reports, Beares' e-mail told
all the Richards that their
access to the WHS preview
would be terminated until the
source of the leak was
determined.
"We
take public distribution of
pre-release software very
seriously," wrote Charlie
Kindel, a WHS product manager,
on the team's blog. "The
leak was unfortunate, and we
took action to find the
parties responsible." Kindel
also said that the culprit was
not named Richard, and wasn't
an MVP. "We're happy to
clarify that no MVPs were
involved in this breach," he
added.

19.04.2007Windows 7 build 7127 leaked
Redmond is still running low on Joe the plumbers as another Windows 7 leak surfaces today. This time around it's the second RTM branch build to
leak, 7127. Approximately a month after 7106 leaked. The build string is 7127.0.090507-1820 meaning it was compiled just over a week ago so it's
still fresh off the blocks. Microsoft is progressing steadily with the RTM branch and company insiders have indicated the software giant is well on
target to finalise the RTM build over the summer. Our guess? Late June or early July. Microsoft is expected to announce general availability of
Windows 7 for before the Christmas period, cashing in on holiday PC purchasers.

20.01.2007Windows Vista SP1 Pre-Beta v.249 Leaked
Yet again, another pre-beta version of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 has been leaked to the public. So, what's different in this version compared to
the last leak?
Well first, this version carries a build tag of 6.0.6001.16633.longhorn.070803-1655 . Unlike v.165
which was integrated with Vista RTM into an ISO image, v.249 is now a standalone installer and weighs approximately 684 MB. This does not require a
clean install for those users running the RTM version. The setup wizard requires several reboots and atleast 30 minutes for installation.
Besides bug fixes, overall v.249 does not differ much from the last leak. However, users claim this version to be buggier and not as stable
as the last leak.

01.09.2007Help Find Memory Leaks in Firefox
If youre a Firefox enthusiast, the Mozilla community is currently looking for additional volunteers to help reduce memory usage and fix any memory
leaks in the browser. If youre not a programmer, Firefox programmer
Jesse Ruderman says you can still
help:
If youre a Firefox user, an easy way to help is to browse with a trunk nightly build wrapped in a script that calls leak-gauge.pl when
Firefox exits. If it reports that documents or windows leaked, try to figure out how to reproduce the leak and then file a bug report.
The
goal of the project is to reduce the memory usage in Firefox 3. On his blog, Ruderman details a number of leaks that have already been identified and
fixed.
